How strict are you with your make-up lesson policy, and how do you handle parents who abuse it?

There are some parents that seem to "forget" about piano lessons, since it's right after school or soccer game times move.

What are some common policies for how far ahead of time can they reschedule without being charged? What policies seem to work best?

Thanks!

I built a tool to arrange score for school ensemble. Could you help me test it?

Hi all, music teacher from Italy here. I teach at a middle school, and I’ve always needed to arrange pieces for the orchestra with different instruments and skill levels.

I’ve been building a free tool to help with this. You upload a piano score as MusicXML, choose the level for each instrument, and it gives you an arrangement you can open in a notation program and change.

It’s still rough  and I need feedback from people who actually do this job, everything could be useful to improve this arranger

If you try it on one of your pieces, I’d love to hear how it went, including the bad parts.

A big thank you to everyone who tries out this tool

A one-line practice card to replace "practise the song"

Hi everyone, we're the Pracsy Team. We think a lot about the week between lessons, and one theme keeps coming up in teacher threads: "practise the song" is too big an instruction for most students, especially two or three days after the lesson.

Here's a simple card format, pulled together from what teachers in recent threads suggested. It fits on an index card, the back page of a notebook, or a WhatsApp message to the parent:

THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE CARD

  • Start here: the exact bar or line (for example, "Line 2, bar 5").
  • The one tricky thing: a single skill, repeated 5 times slowly.
  • Then: play that line once, all the way through.
  • Finish with: one piece you already love, just for fun.
  • How often: 5 minutes, 5 days. Tick a box each day: ☐ ☐ ☐ ☐ ☐
  • Bring back: one question, or a 20-second phone clip of the tricky bit.

Why it can help:

  1. It tells the student where to start, which is usually the hardest part.
  2. Parents can help without reading music, because the boxes are the job.
  3. Your next lesson can begin from the exact spot they worked on.

For group classes (ukulele, recorder, xylophone), one card for the whole class works too.

We'd love to learn from you: what's the one-line practice instruction that has worked best for your students? Drop it in the comments, and if you'd like the card above as a copy-and-paste version for WhatsApp, comment "card" and we'll reply with it.

Hi! Currently a 16yr old and looking for one-on-one flute lessons with a female teacher. Have looked at multiple websites but none seem to appeal to me:( Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I built a free timing practice app for students. Music teachers, would this actually help yours?

Hi everyone,

I'm a solo app developer, not a music teacher, so I'm hoping you can tell me if I'm on the right track.

A metronome tells students where the beat is, but not how far off they were. I built Rhythm Trainer to give them that feedback between lessons.

What it does:

- Students tap along at any tempo from 40 to 240 BPM, with a count-in

- Every tap shows how early or late it was, in milliseconds, so "you're rushing" becomes something they can see

- Accuracy %, letter grade and best records per pattern and tempo, which gives them something to beat each week

- Patterns: 4/4, 3/4, syncopated shuffle, poly-beat, gallop

- Pro adds odd meters: 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8 and 9/8, with accented groupings to feel the subdivisions

- Practice routines and tempo ladders (several patterns and tempos back to back)

- A daily practice streak and practice-time tracking

- Runs can be shared as a code, so a teacher can set a run and the student plays against it on the same timeline

It's free with ads. Pro (monthly, yearly or one-time) unlocks odd meters, custom routines and full stats, and removes ads. Android only for now. Available in 14 languages.

What I'd really value from teachers:

- Would you recommend something like this for home practice, or is tapping on a screen too far from real playing?

- What would you need to see to trust it with your students (e.g. progress you can check, specific exercises)?

- Is there anything that would make it useless or annoying in a teaching context?

Honest feedback is very welcome. I'll read and reply to everything.

Managing in-studio and travel lessons

Hi Everyone,

Do any teachers here offer both in-studio(home) and travel lessons? How do you manage the scheduling and the travel, especially with unpredictable traffic? Doesn't the travel time eat into the in-home teaching time, too much?

How to introduce music to kids as a musical failure

My 2 yr is waaay into his music toys, has (what we think) is surprisingly good rhythm for a toddler and figures out musical things relatively quickly. Like his older sister tried/hated the drums and passed her practice drum (? the one round flat thing on a stand that makes different sounds depending on how you hit it?) and he figured out he could make a more fun sound holding loosely to the ends of the drumsticks instead of toddler death grip slamming them holding the sticks in the middle.

He also has one of those Fischer Price band kits (plastic drum that stores an attachable xylophone, rattle and 2 cymbals) and I KNOW i sound like every parent...but he's actually pretty ok at keeping time with songs he hears for a kid his age.

Trouble is we all suck at music. I am a dyslexic flute and piano failure, his dad has what is known as "stupid fingers" , and biomom played sax in highschool but hasn't touched anything musical since (throuple, raising him together in the same house).

He goes to Kindermusic and enjoys that a lot. He likes to do that frenzied toddler dance thing anytime he hears music, ESPECIALLY live music. But we'd like to do more to nurture his interest and what appears to be at least a dash of natural talent. Is there more stuff we could be exposing him to? Books you'd recommend? Places that allow toddlers to mess around with real instruments?

REALLY not trying to be a stage mom here. It just seems like a genuine interest, and as an ESL teacher I know all kids under 7 are little sponges for language -- which music definitely is! Any advice is appreciated :)

Is there any measurable uptick of clarinetists among millennials? I (31) grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants and wonder if Squidward playing the instrument made it more popular among young students in the 2000s.
