General Discussion They can’t keep getting away with this 😫😤

Post image

How do so many people believe Maryland’s a northern state when our culture is so distinctively southern? I’m glad to see Myrtle Beach showing us love though!

As a friend from the Deep South said when we told her we were moving south to MD from PA - “Honey, Maryland’s only south on the map…”

DC is considered way? Northern right.. Maryland is above it..

I lived on Maryland Oxon hill and lived in Georgia..big difference

DC is definitely southern on account of half of it being in VA

You should see our Swamps

I always thought of Maryland as a northern or mid Atlantic state. My cousins from there were fancy city people 🤣 what kind of southern culture does Maryland have? Not being snarky, just never thought of it as southern.

Maryland can be divided into three distinct regions. Western Maryland is basically Appalachia, I mean it’s right up there mixed in with West Virginia. The there’s the central part (“the western shore”) DC and Baltimore and all that stuff, that’s Yankee territory. Then the eastern shore is basically nothing but chicken houses and pigs. So by land MD is at least 2/3rds southern-identifying. But of course the majority of the population down the middle would likely say otherwise.

Cool thanks for answering!!

Helpful for me too.

Maryland is a northern state

4

u/felldestroyed Sep 07 '26

Maryland is below the Mason Dixon line and serves solid biscuits at roadside restaurants. If virginia is southern, so is maryland. --born and raised southerner that grew up in upstate sc/nc appalachia that lives in Philly where biscuits blow chunks.

Charlotte NC girl here, just moved to Murrells inlet SC. For some reason I always thought of Maryland to be like New England or something…if not by map then culturally I guess?

Never been there, so obviously I have no idea what I’m talking about, nor I I even have a clue why I thought of it that way—I just think it’s interesting that there are so many different interpretations (probably not the correct word but best I can come up with) of a single state. 🧐

Biscuitville

1

u/JohnDoe11B Sep 11 '26

Thats the stuff right there. No In-N-Outs, but we got Biscuitville. Also, barbecue. The internet says Maryland isnt recognized as a foundational barbecue belt state. Not southern in my book.

Preciate you fell

1

u/felldestroyed Sep 07 '26

Yeah, this is just some tourist bullshit.

1

u/Potential-Fennel5968 Sep 07 '26

Virginia politics are definitely northern

1

u/blahblahsnickers Sep 11 '26

Not for most of the state.

1

u/ninhibited Sep 10 '26

For real, if MD is the south then so is Indiana 😂

Agree. Good job for many years.

I miss the Shrimper, used to have a couple of locations in Columbia and the food was always served hot and fresh and was a good deal from what you got. We also used to have a Maryland Fried Chicken but looks like the closest one now is in North Augusta.

3

u/daedraxo Sep 07 '26

Only thing i want (im biased cus im from up north) is good nyc/nj pizza spots, and we r getting them.

Quite the distinct one indeed, though much of the Deep South is rural too.

2

u/DoNotTreadonMe173 Sep 07 '26

Definitely mid Atlantic and if you've crossed the Bay Bridge to the eastern shore, you've no doubt smelled the many chicken farms.

2

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Most assuredly Mid-Atlantic, though Southern all the same

2

u/Ok-Rice-7755 Sep 07 '26

You do know where and why that place originated right lol? It was far from Maryland and not much to do with the state being southern

0

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Fried Chicken is a classic southern dish, most of the food in Maryland is southern influenced, this location is a restaurant that is in the south, making southern styled dishes from another state. How’s any of this off the mark?

2

u/Ok-Rice-7755 Sep 07 '26

The place originated in Florida

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

OH FURTHER SOUTH, MY BAD 🤣

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Fam…did you even read my reply?

1

u/Ok-Rice-7755 Sep 07 '26

And the guy was from Delaware. The name has nothing to do with southern influence

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Bro, hate to break it to you…

0

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Deleware is a southern state

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

We ain’t touched the North not once in this discussion

2

u/Key_Arm_6566 Sep 07 '26

Maryland is North

2

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Learn American geography

2

u/Narezza Sep 07 '26

Its not a geography question, its a culture question.

2

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

We quite literally are the state where the south begins on account of the Mason-Dixon. How tf are y’all dividing up the US map?

2

u/Narezza Sep 07 '26

You're still talking geography.

No one here arguing with you is saying that you're not below the Mason Dixon. We're all saying that nobody says "Geez, we're definitely in the south now" while traveling through Maryland.

Although, I have to admit, the more I read your comments, the more I feel like you were educated down here.

3

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Ya kno I un nough wat yer talmbout.

Riiiiight. Because we’re going to act like the southern intelligence stereotype is accurate now.

3

u/Narezza Sep 07 '26

Bro, you're arguing about Maryland Fried Chicken. Originally from Orlando, Florida. Started by a man from Delaware, son of Italian immigrants.

u/Royal_Breadfruit9667 Sep 07 '26

If you have to actively try to convince people your state is part of the South, it’s not. Not a soul from the Carolina’s down has ever had to try to convince people their state was southern.

2

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Exactly, that’s thanks to our Mason-Dixon, yer welcome

1

u/Royal_Breadfruit9667 Sep 07 '26

No, it’s because real southern states are known to be that. No convincing needed. You’ll be ok Yankee. Go back to putting sugar in your grits or whatever you weirdos do

2

u/Potential-Fennel5968 Sep 07 '26

We don't eat grits... Bacon egg and cheese, salt Peppa ketchup ya herd

2

u/Royal_Breadfruit9667 Sep 07 '26

Further proving my point. Thank you.

2

u/Potential-Fennel5968 Sep 07 '26

Thats Yankee, NY. Idk what Maryland is perhaps a red headed stepchild between us

2

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Meh you can still come up and steal our gumbo recipes buddy, it’s okay we won’t tell.

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

I’m not here to convince you, I’m simply saying that I’m surprised so many folks feel that way.

2

u/Royal_Breadfruit9667 Sep 07 '26

The literal only people who think Maryland is part of the South, is people from Maryland.

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Your opinion is valid

2

u/GhostMaker26 Sep 07 '26

What? Another Dollar General or the Yankee's fried chicken.

4

u/soodie55 Sep 07 '26

It’s below the Mason Dixon line which makes it a southern state.

1

u/acgreene242 Sep 07 '26

anyone who says maryland isn't southern hasn't been outside the i95 corridor

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

THANK YOU that’s all I’m sayin’

1

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

This is great banter

1

u/ccradio Part-Timer | Baltimore| 2018 Sep 07 '26

The best description I've heard about Maryland is that it's our northernmost Southern state, and our southernmost Northern state.

Anyway, the Maryland Fried Chicken people don't know what a chicken box is, so.

1

u/TiredWillie24 Sep 07 '26

Never have I ever thought that Maryland is a Southern state. Mid Atlantic at best. No offense.

2

u/kurosilenceofficial Sep 07 '26

Because a lot of folks unfamiliar with Maryland believe we’re northern culturally when that really isn’t the case. Don’t have a point to make here mostly due to all the folks who’ve commented clearly highlighting my caption. I get that we don’t seem like the south. Hell I’m from Maryland and didn’t even realize that we were for years, but that’s what we are; that’s the exact reason we have the DEEP SOUTH (not caps cause of you, you’re cool) because just like PA is rural with northern sensibilities, MD is southern with northern sensibilities. I couldn’t believe we were southern for years until I actually started to appreciate it.

So as I said in my caption, I do not cease to be amazed at how many people will swear Maryland ain’t the south. But that’s for them, I love everyone’s culture from here down and back up. Everything else is personal preference.

1

u/TiredWillie24 Sep 07 '26

Well said. Your last sentence sums it up nicely.

1

u/gotalifetolive Sep 07 '26 edited Sep 07 '26

Grew up in Maryland. Born in Baltimore, grew up in outside of DC. I think we sit right on the line, between North and South. And to be honest it's all about the steamed blue crabs in Chesapeake Bay seasoning.

Annapolis had a huge clamp festival beside the Navel Academy, and Baltimore has the Pimlico Racetrack. We sailed on the Potomac and the Bay. And I personally went to Rehoboth and Ocean City Beach.

1

u/spousalsexytimes Sep 07 '26

Ive lived here since ‘87….Maryland Fried Chicken was here then as far as I can recall. Myrtle been loving up on you for quite awhile lol

1

u/DrHeartworm Sep 08 '26

I've visited Myrtle Beach many times since I have family in that area. It's been there my whole life.

1

u/kayyemmbee Sep 07 '26

Isn’t this Florence

1

u/PrestigiousDegen Sep 08 '26

Technically it is south of the Mason-Dixon line.... meaning historically (colonial era) Maryland was considered a southern state. Definitely not by today's standards though

1

u/kurosilenceofficial 24d ago

The culture of MD from the outside looking in is often described as Northern, but when you ask anyone to explain why they consider it to be that way they aren't able to be concrete about it. I realize that culture is hard to describe objectively, but people are going off of assumptions. You have to be around to see how southern it actually is.

1

u/Oxbow41 Sep 09 '26

That particular Maryland Fried Chicken/The Shrimper Restaurant pictured here is located in Florence South Carolina. On Irby St.

1

u/rimshot101 Sep 11 '26

Don't forget The National House of Pancakes. I always wanted to start a little restaurant right next to it called The Municipal House of Pancakes.

u/flomutt Sep 07 '26

The People's Republic of Maryland is despicable.
