RALEIGH — NC State took out its frustration from an opening game loss on Richmond on Friday night.

NC State set school records for total yards and rushing touchdowns in a 73-0 rout of Richmond of the Football Championship Subdivision at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The Wolfpack's 10 total touchdowns were the most in a game since 1919, and NC State's 73 points were the most in a game since 1936. NC State had 734 total yards, including 428 rushing yards, and eight rushing touchdowns against Richmond.

“We definitely needed some momentum in the locker room, to just get our confidence back,” senior cornerback Brian Nelson II said. “We know we are a great team. We know that we’re really good and it’s just a matter of believing that throughout the whole season and also getting other people to realize we have something special in this program.”

Quarterback Will Wilson has three rushing scores, running back Duke Scott has two, quarterback CJ Bailey and running backs Davion Gause and Dylan McCory had one rushing touchdown. Bailey and Wilson also threw for one touchdown each in the commanding victory.

The Wolfpack led 28-0 in the second quarter when the game entered a 90-minute weather delay, which did nothing to slow the N.C. State offense. The Pack’s stellar output, one of its best in recent history, was much-needed after its own blowout loss on national television two weeks ago. “Proud of our players, first of all, and the way that they allowed us to coach them,” N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren said. “The way that the staff took criticism, I think everybody sat in there after underachieving two weeks ago, and had a tough pill to swallow and 14 days to have to eat it, and did a great job. That’s what you want. You want a response.”

"The whole line, they blocked their behinds off," Scott said. "Big shout-out to those guys up front, because no matter who was back there, they all went to work... The biggest thing that changed was we had a point to prove. We went to make sure we didn't put what we put on Virginia on the tape."

The receivers who two weeks ago couldn't get open — or couldn't connect with Bailey when they did — broke out too. Jojo trader got in the mix with three catches for 52 yards, and we were able to see some of the high school connection with him and Bailey. But the standout was Keenan Jackson, who in his third year with the Wolfpack went for 123 yards on four catches. Bailey looked like a different quarterback throwing his way, finishing 13-of-17 for 281 and a score. Jackson waved off the idea that anything had changed with his QB.

"I don't think much was different. I mean, that's my quarterback," Jackson said. "I've been with him every single day since we first stepped on campus... We both expect the best out of each other."
