Assaulted and mugged on Williamsburg Bridge bike path

Firstly I’m fine other than a bruised elbow. But I’ve never had anything like this happen to me in 13 years of living in nyc. Around 10pm tonight I was on a citi e-bike coming up the bike lane ramp from Brooklyn going toward Manhattan. At the part where the red covering ends and you swing a left onto the actual bridge part, two masked guys walked up to me blocking my path and kicked me off my bike. Fell to the ground and they were hitting me and yelling “take everything” at each other. I got out of their hands and took my crossbody bag off and threw it at them and sprinted away in the bike lane toward manhattan. I had my keys and ID and CC in there. They didn’t take my phone. Called the cops as I was running toward Manhattan and met with them at that side. In the station there were two others who had been mugged by the same guys on the pedestrian side within the same 20ish minutes. The other two claimed they saw the perps holding knives (I didn’t see those).

Never expected something like this to happen on such a high traffic spot at 10pm on a Saturday night. It was totally surreal and out of body for me as it was happening. I’m okay. But it was very scary. Be careful out there.

Bike lane concrete barrier accident dashcam edition!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I posted some pictures earlier about a car that drove onto the bike lane barrier on northern blvd between douglaston and Bayside in Queens. I got home and was able to recover some of our dashcam footage to get the full picture of how the car got there. I tried to edit the post and add the video but I was unable to attach a video, so this can be the follow-up post.

To their credit, the sun was really bright and it was at a terrible angle. On the other hand, they should have seen the very visible bike lane and barrier before turning, where there was no sun blocking the view.

And yes it was an elderly person driving.

Central Park bike crash between East Meadow and Reservior

Just passed a scene about 20 minutes ago where an elderly person was hit by a bike it seems (the crosswalk between east meadow and the reservoir). Does anyone have any updates if they’re okay? FDNY was arriving as I left.

RIP to this beauty

Locked it up in the bike rack on 2nd ave and 6 st after dropping my kid off at school yesterday. Came out to do school pickup up and this is what she looked like.

Garbage trucks drive in the bike lane here so maybe that's what did it? No businesses have cameras looking at the spot. There's an NYU building across 2nd that might have a view on it, but they wouldn't let me see their cameras. I made a police report for insurance and they said they'd look at their footage, but I ain't holding my breath...

I emailed a bunch of non-profit bike places around me to see if they want any of the parts. Gonna get a tern short haul once I get the insurance money. I need acoustic as I have to keep it on the street...

Anyway, just mainly wanted to post this up and mourn this beauty acoustic cargo bike. Loved this thing. My kid loved it too. RIP bike. I'm sad.

Rode there earlier and nothing, but as of 30 mins ago there’s orange cones on the white line between the rightmost and middle lanes for at least half the loop (the distance I covered)

Is there a such thing as going too slow?

A month ago, I finally got a Citi Bike membership and I’ve learned a lot. First of all, I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy biking. I only take the train/bus 2-3 times a week now versus everyday in the past.

I mainly commute to work via the WSH or down 9th avenue and up 10th avenue, and my trips are usually no longer than 15 min.

I had a question though, sometimes I take the blue bike which means I go a little slower. I’m still kind of new to biking so much so I’m really cautious. I try to stay the right but I’ve had a couple people get annoyed at me because of my speed especially on the narrower parts of the WSH.

Should I make an effort to go a certain speed?

Shared lane etiquette

I’m getting more comfortable riding on shared lanes/not protected lanes and today I had to ride 3 avenues unprotected. Do you ride behind a car, or do you try to squeeze in between the car and parked cars? This is on a one lane, one way road with parked cars on both sides. I always see people squeeze by when we’re stuck in traffic but I worry I’ll hit one.

Seeking advice after Accident

I was hit by a car yesterday riding my bike northbound on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn. There is a Bike line on this road but it’s still a very chaotic place to cycle. The driver who hit me made an illegal U-turn in a busy intersection and then reversed to park. He not did not see me even when I shouted and waved my arms for him to stop. My front tire got stuck under the back of his car as he backed up and I fell over onto my right side. I landed on my hand and may have broken bones in my hand. currently unable to use my right hand, which is difficult since I am right handed. Went to the ER and did x-rays, CT scans, and an ultrasound because I am 12 weeks pregnant. Luckily my baby is fine.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene when the cops arrived, so I was not able to get his information. They were able to run his plates and found out that he has a suspended license. Considering that he may not have car insurance, what is my best course of action to get compensation for my hospital bills?
A personal injury lawyer contacted me this morning, but I am wary of going with someone who I don’t know anything about.
Have people been in this situation before? what do you recommend I do? TIA.

hinking about getting a bike in NYC - worth it on a $100 budget?

Hey y’all, a bit of context first: for the last 10 years I rode a bike in Lima. Anyone who’s visited Peru’s capital knows it’s a complete mess: chaotic traffic, unreliable public transport, terrible roads, you name it. But I loved biking anyway. For me it’s about saving time, working out on my commute, and helping the environment. I still believe that sometimes you get faster to your points when you ride a bike...

I recently moved to NYC and I’ll be here for the next 2 years. I’m still figuring out whether it’s worth having a bike to get around the city, especially compared to public transit. Citi Bike doesn’t cover my area, so that option is out.

So, buying my own: is it expensive? I’d like to spend around $100 in MarketPlace. Is that realistic? Where would you look (used vs. new, Facebook Marketplace, shops, etc.)? Where should I get one and take it for maintenance? Any tips on locks or storage are welcome too.

Open to all recommendations, thanks in advance!

Stopping (or not) for Pedestrians at Crosswalks on Bike Paths

I live near the West Side Highway and bicyclists almost never stop or even slow down at the pedestrian crosswalks despite a clearly painted crosswalk, yield to peds signage on the sides of the path at the crosswalks, bigass lightup traffic signs at some crosswalks, plus the yield signs in the middle of the freaking crosswalk.

tonight i had a rare occasion of a bicyclist actually not trying to mow me and my dog (leashed always) down when I crossed, and he had the audacity to yell "you are welcome" to me for obeying the law.

can someone explain to me why bicyclists act so entitled? i am genuinely asking so that i can try to turn my rage into empathy

Is the sentiment in CP always this hot?

I'm kinda new to the city so I want to know if the anti-bike sentiment is always this hot or if it's gotten noticeably worse in the last year. I worry that if the sentiment keeps getting worse, they will actually try banning road bikes in the park or enacting some law that makes it effectively impossible to ride laps (like a strict 15 mph limit or stop signs at every crossing).

When I ride laps, some people sometimes treat me like I'm public enemy #1. They stare and yell at me in the crosswalks even though im 200 feet away and clearly coming to a stop. When crossing (even at green lights) I often hear comments about how bikes never stop or random jeers. Obviously, the recent deaths are a factor but is this level of animosity towards bikes new?

Honestly, it's annoying because people are taking their frustrations out on me even when I'm following the law. But in a way, I understand it because I see all types of bikers (roadies, deliveristas, citibikes, kids on e bikes, etc) being assholes in the park on every single ride.

For the record, I would support more enforcement against the worst offenders. There's simply too many people who weave between pedestrians and other cyclists, pass in the runners lane, fly by at 25+mph in congested areas, etc. I ride by police all the time, sometimes over 20mph, without getting pulled over, and I believe it's partly because I actually attempt to exercise good judgement and share the park with others. If the worst offenders (cyclists and pedestrians) would just chill out a bit, the park would be a safer place. But "just" doing something like exercising safe judgement is never effective public policy.

Crashed in to a dog in Central Park this evening 10/14

1.1k Upvotes

First reddit post. I crashed my bike this evening in Central Park after colliding with a dog. The dog was off leash. The crash occurred in the designated bike lane (right side) on the East Drive down hill near the ice rink.

1) The dog is alright. He seemed ok. I encouraged the owner to follow up with vet in the morning. I hit the rib/side area and know impact injuries can be hidden.

2) I am alright. Banged up... shoulder, knee, foot. I'll feel it fully in the AM.

3) The bike is TBD. Left side impact. First glance/review shows damage to left lever, seat, pedal and all the usual points of impact in a crash. JS Cycles was still open, so I was able to drop off the bike for a proper review. Juan and Maria are the best.

Shoutout to the runners/pedestrians who stopped to check on me. You guys rule. Everyone was in my defense and very frustrated on my behalf. I appreciate all of you. It makes a shitty situation 10x better.

Shoutout to the cyclist who snagged a police officer to expedite that process and the few guys riding by who asked me if I needed any help with my bike or getting home.

The dog owner stuck around. He was a nice guy. He apologized. I asked him how his dog was. We were humans. No yelling, no screaming, no tantrums. We walked to a safer area and called the police. We filed a proper report and exchanged contact information. He will be covering repair and equipment costs after the bike is looked at. I hope he keeps his word.

The crash could have been worse. I recognize the climate in the park right now... Emotions are running high. I always dial down my speed in that down hill and prepare incase something is lurking around that blind corner. That decision saved my life.

I owned a dog for 8 years in NYC (lost him last summer) and live next to the park. I am on a waitlist for early 2027 for a pup (golden retriever). We utilized off leash hours in the AM for all of those years and followed the rules and were extra careful/leashed near all cycling pathways+entrances.

Bike: Newly built (3 months old) custom S-Works SL8. Enve pro 4.5s, THM aero bar, dura ace groupset. Took me a year of collecting parts, fitting, waiting for deals etc.

Dog: Some sort of Malinoise / Shepard K9. Pretty cool dog. Very well behaved.

End of story takeaways? Idk man... mixed emotions. Ruined a beautiful night and great workout. I hope the dog is OK. The guy was nice and honest hard to hate him. I am ok. I didn't even get that fired up (guess I'm getting older?). My new bike is banged up and it breaks my heart.

Thanks for listening

I wonder if it'd be more effective for the NYPD to educate rather than just write tickets. Maybe the NYPD in conjunction with NYCC, Transalt, or some other cycling organization can set up a "Sin Bin" to promote good behavior.
