Need Advice Coarse Hair Tips

Everything I've seen on Tik Tok has to do with fine hair. I believe I have coarse hair with medium/high density and its color treated. With winter coming up I'm concerned about dryness and I'm tempted to try Marley braids, but my stylist told me I have to give braids with added hair a break. Since June, I've been following that with weekly washes, mini twists, braids and literally just tried a wash and go but I'm kicking myself that I didn't try it early with the temps already being low. Any tips and tricks for coarse hair?

Need Advice Sew-ins

For those who wear sew-ins, how often do you wash your hair and how do you make sure your natural hair is moisturised underneath?

Also, is 2 months too long to have it in?

Review Returning

Used it yesterday and loved how my hair felt but my scalp was feeling a little weird. Went to sleep and everything was normal when I work up. Anyway didn’t like the leave in and cream I used in my hair so today after work I was like lemme wash it out (normally I’d never wash my hair two days in a row but I hated the coated feeling on my hair). I figured this would give me a chance to see if the scalp feeling was all in my head or not. Turns out it’s not. I’m def experiencing some irritation from these products. Sucks because I heard good things about Redken. Ugh back on the hunt. I just wanted to see what some salon quality shampoos and conditioners were about. Anyway let me get my coins back because these are not cheap.

Review Has anyone used the green African Pride Pre Poo?

I usually grab the aloe pre-shampoo, and that works great. Great slip and only $5. Yesterday I saw the peppermint, rosemary, and sage "pre-wash detangler" and decided to grab it. The slip is still amazing and the peppermint feels nice on my scalp. But omg the smell is overpowering! It almost makes my eyes water. And it's not at as viscous so it's a little harder to scoop out without it dripping everywhere. It was also $8. We'll see if it makes a difference to my hair but I don't think I'll be buying it again once I finish this jar. I found it in the clearance section and the manufactured date is almost 2 yrs old so maybe I should've taken the hint 😬

Need Advice Hair growth from January to now

My hair's been relaxed since I was two so I never really saw my 4c hair. This January, I decided to stop using relaxer. First image shows unstretched 4c hair with relaxed hair and the second image shows the 4C hair stretched by itself. I want my hair to grow like image 3 and 4. Any advice to grow my hair better and longer?

Tips & Tricks I think I finally figured out how to prevent my roots from frizzing while styling

I noticed when using styling brushes, my mids and ends would be relatively defined but the roots would frizz a lot. The only areas that wouldn’t do this were the nape of my neck and the sections by my ears because those parts have a different texture.

Finger coiling was my main root-frizz prevention method, along with the fact that my ends are heat damaged so it helped with uniformity too. The roots are lower porosity as well.

The solution I always see people give is to add water, but I found that when I didn’t add any water at all, only leave-in and mousse, the styling brush clumped my curls and the hair didn’t frizz nearly as much.

Is it sustainable/good for hair health in the long run? Not sure, but I got way less breakage and my hair feels the same as in the past. Is it more S-shaped than super ringlety at the roots? Yeah, but I think I’m embracing it/liking it more these days so I’m not too bothered.

Maybe if you’re struggling with the same problem but don’t like the idea of adding no water, you can try getting the hair more damp rather than soaking wet. My hair wasn’t necessarily bone-dry but the level of wetness post wash + wringing excess water out if that makes sense.

Apologies if this is a common solution already and I’m just super behind the curve lol

Routine:
- Suave clarifying shampoo
- TGIN rosewater hydrating shampoo
- Pattern Palo Santo Medium Conditioner
- Wring excess water out of hair
- Knot Today Kinky Curly leave in conditioner
- The Doux Mousse Def
- Unbrush curl defining brush
- Air dry
- Pineapple + bonnet at night

KIND care tips for dyed locs. The main two things I’ve been been focusing on is moisture (retention?) and low tension styles. They’re loosely pinned in the first photo, not exactly tied in with the ponytail holder.

I’m 2yrs in and this is the first time I’ve colored them. The stylist lifted them to a darker shade of golden brown, if that gives any type of reference to the level of bleaching.

Anywho, I’d appreciate feedback!

Need Advice Alternatives to braids

I previously posted on here how due to getting knotless braids, i have sadly lost some density in my hair. I also think it might have affected my edges as well.

I’m still in high school, and all the black girls have really pretty braids, weaves , extensions, etc.

I don’t really feel confident in wearing my natural hair all out right now, unless it is in a bun of some sort.

I was supposed to get a sew in, but I cannot risk anymore damage.

I would like to try half wigs w/ mini braids under it, or possibly miracle knots. I would appreciate any other suggestions.

I think I've finally got the method down somewhat. I used Aunt Jackie's twisting cream, and I did a small bantu knot at the end of each twist.

Need Advice Blow Dry Frequency? 🤔

Hello, beautiful people!

I’m entering another loose natural era after several years of locs and am noticing two conflicting(?)
interests:

1) My hair and scalp like being washed more frequently than I’d realized. Like twice a week. I’m better than ever at pairing a clarifying shampoo with a hydrating shampoo and using a scalp massager thingy to make sure my scalp benefits as much as possible every time. Washing and detangling are both much faster, easier, and more enjoyable than I remember them being the last time I had access to my loose hair!

2) Heat styling isn’t as scary as it used to be either. Between bond repair products, better technique, and a better appreciation of how to choose heat protectant and ensure clean hair, I’m more confident about blow drying now as well.

My question is this: for people who consider themselves primarily blow dry naturals, how often are you actually able to blow dry your hair? I’m tempted to believe that if I become efficient enough with washing and styling, I could get away with doing a blow dry + braid out and/or bun twice a week with time being my biggest challenge to solve for.

Is anyone with very coily kinky hair actually blowing out their hair that often and still retaining length?

Need Advice Best gel to layer under the Doux bananas xtreme gel?

also, how does bananas xtreme gel compare to innersense gel and xtreme wetline?

I know this gel is intended to be worn alone, but I have very fine, low porosity, high/medium density hair and it just won’t clump properly without a bottom layer gel.

Need Advice How do I shape/cut my hair like this?

First photo is the goal, second photo is me. My hair is shorter than the person in the first photo, for sure, but I want my hair to grow into this shape if possible. How do I do this?

Also, my hair is uneven because I tried to give myself a trim last week and messed it up. It looked really nice before, and I am still very said that it’s messed up now. Any advice appreciated.

Need Advice I have 1A hair, my roommate with 4B/4C hair was hospitalized. No family & I'm her closest friend, I need recommendations for shampoos, conditioners, and anything else she may need for a super simple wash and go routine. Please help

So some background context - I've known her since about june this year, she moved in with me a few weeks ago after confiding that she's been dealing with homelessness. A few days ago she had a psychiatric emergency and had to be hospitalized. She's no contact with her family because of abuse, and she recently moved to our city to be away from them, so she doesn't have many other relationships here yet. Me and my bf are her support system right now.

The issue here is that because of her homelessness, she really only had soap and body wash at the apartment, because of her mental state she's been unable to feed/clothe herself the past few days (let alone track down my phone number to call me and ask for what she needs), and because I'm not her next of kin that's the only way I'd be allowed to be in contact with her while she's in the hospital.

I've made sure she was able to get her other belongings - I brought her pillow, blanket, and several sets of clothes (for cold temps, warm temps, daytime, and sleep), books, etc.

I have no idea what to bring for her hair, and I'm honestly overwhelmed trying to tackle all the administrative stuff I've been having to navigate to try and get her the care she deserves.

I want her to have a minimal step routine that she'll be able to manage once she's in a little better state of mind. I'm looking for a shampoo and conditioner, possibly a leave in conditioner/styling product as well that will keep her hair healthy and nourish it, and I'm completely out of my depth with all the information I'm looking at right now online.

I don't think the hospital will let her have a wide tooth comb (or possibly any comb) because of the possibility of hurting herself with it right now, and I know they won't let her have hairbands or wraps, so if there's any alternative suggestions for that as well I'd really appreciate it. They did let her have her bonnet.

Thank you so much if you've taken the time to read this, and especially if you've responded. We can use all the help we can get right now 🙏❤️
