š„Summer is nice, but nights like this are something special āļø
Something about watching snow fall under the streetlights makes it magical,
This is not my video, found it amazing so thought Iād share it here.

I would much rather it be cold than hot. You can't escape heat with clothing.

I donāt have to shovel the heat

Spend a couple summers here in the river adjacent south and you will want to run back north. Two days ago it was 95° with 45% humidity here. Even inside with AC was still very uncomfortable. Outside felt like breathing soup.

u/Adventurous-Brain-36 1d ago
We get both in parts of Canada, particularly northern Canada. Several days around 35°c (95f) with humidity making it feel closer to 40° in the summer, then -35°c in the winter.

u/carthuscrass 1d ago edited 1d ago
I spent several months in Canada in the late summer and winter years back and I would absolutely trade my weather for yours. You guys might get a few really hot days, but this year we started topping 95°F(35°C) in mid March and stayed that way until very recently. We had 25 days where the heat index was over 120°F(51.6°C).
Edit: Before someone takes offense, I'm not meaning that in a condescending way. Believe me, I would live somewhere else if I had the means. I hate it here.

I grew up in Colorado and currently live and work less than a mile from a major river in low country South Carolina. I work in a machine shop that isn't climate controlled. I'll still take this over dealing with the snow and bullshit that come with it.

Those conditions are the best. Humid air, wet heavy snow, and no wind make for some of the best winter memories.

u/Ecstatic_Sand5417 1d ago
You literally can beat heat with clothing. More people live in hotter climates than cold ones. Sooo overused

Streetlights? This is just night skiing/boarding at a ski resort. Those are the lights used to light up the run.

Not if itās wet and dampy all the time
1
u/ShadowBurger 19h ago
That's exactly why I don't like summer, makes me wet and dampy after any sort of movement.

u/_Nature_Enthusiast_ 1d ago
IF you get nights like this
In my area it's mostly rain and mud. Occasional snow melts instantly, creating even more mud. No, thanks, I'll take late spring and early fall. You can have your winter :P

u/totallynormal4me 22h ago
Ive lived in Florida where its pretty normally 90+ and somewhat regularly 100+ with high humidity.
Ive lived in upstate New York where we get anywhere from single digits to -20 and 6-10ft of snow each year.
I would choose blazing hot sun every single fuckin time.

Summers have stopped being "nice" to me. I used to get extremely depressed and anxious when winter came around, now I feel the same way about summer, except worse if you can believe it. Where I live, we casually get around 40° Celsius (104° Fahrenheit) on a regular basis. From mid June to early September. Sure, buildings have AC and it's slowly getting more and more socially acceptable to have it in your home where I'm from, but there's no AC outside. I'm already sweaty as fuck because of my anxiety and my thyroid, so summer gets me wet from top to bottom ALL THE TIME. It fills me with dread more than anything, we're really going to get cooked alive and I have to endure this bullshit for the next 30 years of my life? Fuck summer.

u/Altruistic_Fun_6985 1d ago
Yea I really hate the "you can always put on more clothes argument". Really hate being so bundled I can't move and then soaking my bottom layer in sweat that turns ice cold.
Winter is miserable.

u/Pepperh4m 1d ago
It's not about how many layers you're wearing, it's about what kind.
Your experience sounds like you just weren't dressed properly.

Snowfall without extreme wind or cold is wonderful. This looks pleasant, not sure how anyone would think that all examples of winter weather would be miserable. I say this as someone with fibromyalgia so cold actually makes me feel shitty as hell physically.

You need a better layering system!
The way layering is āmeantā to work is:
- Base layer. Wool or synthetic layer worn next to skin. Manages moisture.
- Mid layer 1. This is usually a fleece or other trim fitting, highly breathable garment.
- Mid layer 2. Another mid layer, usually a lofted synthetic of some sort.
- Mid layer 3. You can have any number, but things get a little crazy after 3. This can be anything from another fleece to a down puffy.
- Shell layer. A hard shell or soft shell that goes over your mid layers to protect from the elements and abrasion. Can be a wind shell too.
- Parka layer. In cold conditions, a large parka is added when you are static to keep you warm.
Side note neck protection is super important. A scarf or neck buff can make a massive difference.
Lots of things can be mixed or matched here. Many fleeces work as base layers. Some fleeces are actually more in the shell location. Sometimes you put a hard shell over your soft shell if conditions merit.
As you said you hate being ābundled up not able to moveā. Thats usually were cost comes in. If you get better quality items you can usually avoid extra layers or they are just thinner and more flexible.
Iām outside skiing/walking all day in freezing temps and feel great because of proper layering.

You make it sound like people put on 6 layers of clothing constantly. I grew up in the mountains and rarely had more than 2-3 layers during the worst of it.

Having money seems so nice!
1
u/ZackZparrow 1d ago
hey c'mon, skiing isn't a luxury (unless you're from zimbabwe)
1
u/BudMcLaine 1d ago
I grew up in New England and my family never had the money for it, unfortunately.
1
u/inothatidontno 1d ago
You dont have to have money to enjoy the snow though. You may not be able to go skiing but sledding and hot chocolate cost next to nothing.
1
u/BudMcLaine 1d ago
Oh loved the snow! Sledding, tunnelling, building forts. Just never had money for skiing/snowboarding.
1
u/inothatidontno 1d ago
I get it. My 2 closest friends when i was in grade school had really nice $1000 dollar snowboards and all the gear. I had the $60 dollar plastic one from walmart and a starter jacket.

If only it was like this for that night/day, and then the next day it all melted.Ā The sludge from the cars, the having to shovel it, the having to wear 40 layers to be warm...that's a naw dawg for meĀ

Rippin' down the mountain while it snows rules, driving home in the snow storm afterwards is a nightmare.

When you are going fast down the mountain in this weather it's like traveling at light speed in Star Trek.
There is nothing like it.

Does anyone remember the movie Frozen? The magical classic about people going for a night ski run?

When I was with a friend in Norway we went down the the market down the road and it was like this.

It's beautiful because we are in a warm room while watching this, while we would have a leaking nose if we were there..

Winter is a pain in the ass. Everything is more difficult.
It is weather like this that makes it worth it. When you have nowhere to go and nothing to do. It's around 20 degrees outside, so it's not too cold but cold enough to keep the snow fluffy.
I was pretty into downhill when I was younger. This makes me want to get back out there, but I haven't skied in 25 years. I know the muscle memory is still there, but I'd kill myself due to poor conditioning.

Boarding at night is no bueno. Is that a steep slope? Who knows? Everything is yellow.
0
u/Inner_Willingness335 1d ago
Fail. Give me 72 degrees and a clear sky over that every day of my life. Yeah, it is pretty when it happens, but when I see it I immediately start am counting the days to the the next 72 degree day.

Well nobody is shovelling snow in this video, so yeah itās nice. But having to shovel it out of your driveway sucks. I hope this is the warmest winter ever

For one, I thought your comment was annoying because snow like this is cool. Something being lit does not mean unique. Otherwise this sub would be called NatureIsFuckingUnique.
Additionally, I was mainly making a joke that since it is snow it is unable to be lit š„.

Winters are depressing, you have to shovel, your car gets stuck/skids and you get a frost bite. Yeah sounds like a lot of fun.

Definitely fake snow. I live in a snowy climate. If it was coming down like that for real, you'd be so wet and miserable. Imagine being in a torrential downpour, but it's frozen.
1
u/petergriffin999 1d ago
LOL that is not fake snow.
While true that if the flakes are that big it's a bit wet, but if you're dressed properly you're not wet.
Skiing/Boarding might be a bit slow though.
