Sickness going around?
My daughter just got very sick out of nowhere and I’m wondering if anything‘s going around. She has a bad headache and she’s been throwing up everything she eats. She tested negative for Covid and the flu. She’s 15 and sleeping sound lay on the bathroom floor right now.

My son got mono about a week ago and it’s kicking his ass. A bunch of his 15 year old friends at school had it too. Unbearable nausea and throwing up, bad stomach pains, headaches, unwillingness to eat anything.

Please tell her to touch her chin to her chest.
If she can't do it without screaming pain in her head and back of her neck, take her to the ER. Also monitor her for petichiae on her face or body.
These are S/S of meningitis.

OP, you reallly need to take this one serious, and heed the advice of this post above. Caught early vs late is life or death.

Just a few months ago i took my partner to the hospital with these symptoms, and having pain trying to touch chin to chest, and the nurses said "oh you probably dont have meningitis, take a benadryl and go home" She got pissed off and left. I took her back the next day and she needed a spinal tap because she had fuckin Spinal Meningitis. Seriously debilitating as its an inflammation of the brain fluid, she was having trouble thinking clearly, so please be as clear as you can about symptoms, your daughter may not be able to articulate well in the pre exam

If it doesn’t get better tonight, head to the LCMC children’s urgent care office in Metairie stat. It’s across from Clearview. I’ve gone there numerous times without issue.

I thought that was just emergencies. They also do urgent care?

It’s an emergency room, my bad. This does sound like an emergent situation, though.

Sounds like norovirus. Incredibly contagious, it lives outside the body on surfaces for something like 36 hours. I’d pop over to urgent care to get a script for zofran (odanestatron) unless you can find friends/family that have it some. It will stop the nausea/vomiting.

Norovirus doesn't give you a headache.

What a strange thing to say. Obviously, dehydration causes headaches.
From Google:
Common Norovirus Symptoms-
Nausea and Vomiting: Often start suddenly, and vomiting can be frequent or forceful.
Diarrhea: Typically watery and loose. Adults often experience more diarrhea than vomiting compared to children.
Abdominal Pain: Stomach cramps and general soreness.
Systemic Signs: Low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and general malaise.

I read that a lot of the Saints players got hit with a bug this weekend also. There is definitely some virus running wild in N.O.

Yeah a lot of viral things are going around, everyone’s sick and all their tests are negative. Family has been sick for over 2 weeks

My husband caught it Tuesday, I believe. We flew out for our anniversary vacation (the first vacation for only us in our 23 yr relationship) and he's still battling it. Not throwing up as much, but still dry heaving.
He has found temporary relief with CVS brand cough, cold, & flu; as well as off brand pepto bismal.

I know I'm late in commenting. This sounds like food poisoning or a gastrointestinal virus like norovirus, as another comnenter said. (Influenza and Covid are respiratory viruses.)

Last month I was sick for a couple of weeks; was throwing up so much I was puking bile. I felt 100% better after a couple of IV bags of meds and fluids. Please get her to the ER.

Don't wait it out if she can't keep water down, dehydration hits way faster than you'd think especially with teens. My nephew ended up in the ER last fall after 2 days of the same thing, they said another 12 hours and his kidneys would've started taking damage
The floor sleeping thing is so real though, the cold tile is the only relief when you're that miserable. Hope she's on the mend soon

I was in the ER last Sunday for severe dehydration. If you can't keep down water you need fluids ASAP.

u/PopiesDaughter 6d ago
Do y’all know if they can give fluids at urgent care?

When school starts and tourists come back things get nasty. Then we get a wee break (except for people with kids, y’all are just fucked with the big nasty) then the holidays happen. Then there’s Mardi Gras.

My daughter in highschool just went through this last week, lasted 5 days and we thought it was food poisoning (as no one else in the house had the illness and she was the only one that had eaten some black grapes that day). Took her to the doc for covid/strep/and even stool parasite test (all negative). She ran fever intermittingly for the first few days, had diarrhea, nausea/ vomiting, extreme fatigue sleeping over 20 plus hours a day. * The diarrhea and the vomiting got to the point of water/bile (she was completely miserable and my heart was breaking for her).

I had the same thing for about 8h straight. No fever but body aches and chills and vomiting/ diarrhea. No idea where it came from but thankfully nobody else in my household got it.

Mono’s been making the rounds as well. It affects different kids in different ways.

There’s a bug going around. Flu-like symptoms, but negative door flu, Covid, and strep. I caught it a couple weeks ago, and relapsed with it last week. I’m just glad to finally feel better.

Just came back from a week in New Orleans and had a brutal stomach virus for two or three of my days there. Not sure if I had something contaminated at a restaurant, but I definitely had norovirus and not just food poisoning.

Multiple kids in my daughter’s class tested positive for flu A on Friday. Then she got sick with fever, cough and vomiting so I assumed she must have it too.

OP, is it possible she has a migraine? They can induce nausea. If that's ruled out, I'd get her to the ER. Urgent care isn't good for much these days and the headache is what worries me more than the nausea or vomiting. Any pain? Sensitivity to light or sound? Fever?

My son had the same thing but with violent shivering and cold sweat developing after he stopped committing. Ha also has a stiff neck. Negative for everything though. Took almost a week to feel better. I took a bunch of Zicam to ward it off. He was the only one to get it. There was a stomach bug & sinus infection thing going around at school.

I’ve been sick for almost two weeks (58/f/biloxi) and my fever came and went from 100-103, coughing from my toe nails, awful headache/back of the neck pain, nauseau and 6.5 weeks out from open heart surgery. Because my fever was 101°, I was advised by my surgeon to go to the ER. They did a chest xray, swabbed me for every upper respiratory infection known to mankind and three blood cultures. Everything came back negative. Today I’m feeling somewhat “normal”. I saw my cardiologist NP this Monday for a post op follow up and she said she’d had it, knows loads who have had it and believes it’s a new strain of Covid. 😳

Suffering with a respiratory infection:clogged sinus coughing can't taste or smell. Swabbed negative last week for Covid and flu. It's worst at night. Dr gave me Amoxacillin.

Well, it’s Sunday night at 7 PM so I’m getting the information that I can at the moment. Thanks for this excellent tip.

Any diagnosis today?
2
u/PopiesDaughter 5d ago
Hi! No diagnosis. She woke up feeling much better and she’s coughing, but she’s had an appetite and hasn’t had any more throwing up. Headache is just mild!

Your kid sounds like she's in rough shape. A doctor visit at urgent care would be the smartest thing to have done. Asking randos if "anything's going around" in viral lung disease season isn't going to help her very much.
Edit: lol hi EU haters! Only in this sub would "take your really sick sounding kid to a doctor" get downvoted. Even though that advice is the top comment in many threads.

It is flu season despite it still being quite warm.
