Starting today, AI-generated content is not allowed in r/NoContract.
Rule #4, No Spam, has just been updated to include this new addition: "Blatantly AI-generated content is considered spam and will be removed."
In r/NoContract, we want to read your thoughts. We don't care what chatgpt has to say. This rule change is intended to encourage our fellow redditors to put some effort into their posts and comments.
Needless to say, one cannot always tell what is and is not AI. If I see something that was obviously copied and pasted from an AI chatbot, I will remove it.
Posts and comments predating today will not be subject to this rule.
This is a change I've been wanting to make for a while now, and this poll showed me that most of our members agree with me.
All the best,
Petar

Data prioritization policies of the carriers and the MVNOs that use their networks
3/11/26 - Updated to show that MobileX has a paid QCI 8 addon. This has been around for about 5 months now but I forgot to update the guide.
8/28/25 - MobileX has been discovered to be dropped to QCI 9 now. https://www.reddit.com/r/NoContract/comments/1n2me7i/mobilex_is_no_longer_qci_8_which_leaves_us_mobile/
This is a complex topic that pops up a lot so I thought that I would organize all of the available info in one place. One of the key differentiating factors between postpaid, prepaid, and MVNO services is data prioritization. Basically carriers manage the congestion on their networks by assigning a different QCI class to different types of traffic. For our purposes, we will only be looking at QCIs 6, 7, 8, and 9 but there are higher priorities that exist for things like phone calls that will be universal across all of a carrier's plans. Higher numbers are lower priority. An important thing to note is that deprioritization is not a throttle; it only matters when the network is congested. If nobody else is using the network in your area, you'll get the full speed that can be provided. Your QCI affects not just your speed but your latency on the network. It is not unusual to see priority data with around 20-50ms latency while someone who is deprioritized is getting 100-150ms at the same time despite both plans posting high speed test results because the prioritized traffic gets to go first, just something else to be aware of.
The old one was getting a bit long after many updates so I decided to just make a whole new one. I will break it down by network and, where appropriate, specific phone plans. I am going to add business plans and first responder plans here as there were many requests for that but if I mess up anything, please let me know, as I am not as well-versed in those plans.
Also, at this point, 5QI (the 5G replacement for QCI) values have so far matched the LTE QCI on each plan I’ve seen. If this changes, I’ll make notes about it.
Business plans are hard to keep up with and so are frequent MVNO plan changes so if I make a mistake, please let me know.
Verizon
Verizon only uses 3 QCI classes – 7, 8, and 9.
QCI 7 is reserved exclusively for Verizon Frontline customers so this priority level may as well not exist for those of us who aren’t first responders.
QCI 8 is given to the Verizon business Plus 5G, business Pro 5G, business My Biz with the Premium Network Experience add-on, consumer postpaid plans (other than Welcome Unlimited), Xfinity Mobile, and Spectrum Mobile.
US Mobile’s Warp 5G SIM offers QCI 8 data on 5G devices only if you have Unlimited Premium or if you were a US Mobile customer before 8/18/2025. MobileX has a QCI 8 addon available as well but is QCI 9 without it.
Visible+ and Visible+ Pro are both unlimited QCI 8 data. Total Wireless' Total 5G Unlimited and Total 5G+ Unlimited plans have unlimited priority data included.
QCI 9 goes to everything else. The Start 5G business plan, My Biz without the Premium Network Experience add-on, branded prepaid besides the Unlimited Plus plan, Visible’s base plan, US Mobile Warp 5G Unlimited Starter (a QCI 8 add-on will be coming), Unlimited Flex (without the QCI 8 add-on), and By the Gig (without the QCI 8 add-on). Mobi and all other prepaid companies that use Verizon’s network are known to assigned to this QCI. Anyone who uses their premium data bucket on Verizon’s brands will be moved to QCI 9.
Other TracFone brands are up in the air. I have gotten reports of priority data (and seen it myself on SafeLink, a TracFone brand) but I’ve also gotten reports of deprioritized data, complete with screenshots. It seems to be random what people get so if you absolutely require priority data, it might be best to look outside of the TracFone brands. I personally experienced being dropped from QCI 8 to QCI 9 on SafeLink but my Straight Talk line had QCI 8 from the start and remained QCI 8 until I canceled it three months later.
AT&T
AT&T uses QCI 6, 7, 8, and 9.
QCI 6 is reserved for FirstNet customers (with primary status), Business Unlimited Premium (grandfathered) and some corporate responsibility plans.
QCI 7 is assigned to Business Unlimited Premium 2.0 with Turbo, as well as Unlimited Premium PL, Unlimited Extra EL, and AT&T Prepaid Unlimited Max Plus customers who pay $7 for AT&T Turbo. FirstNet extended primary plans get QCI 7 as well. US Mobile is in the process of adding QCI 7 as a paid add-on for Unlimited Premium and I’ll update the guide when it’s available.
QCI 8 is assigned to Business Unlimited Advanced, Business Unlimited Premium 2.0 (without Turbo), Unlimited Extra EL, Unlimited Premium PL, Prepaid Unlimited Max, Prepaid Unlimited Max Plus, the $300 AT&T Prepaid annual plan with 16GB of high speed data, Cricket Supreme Unlimited, Cricket Sensible 10GB, as well as plans offered by H2o, Consumer Cellular, and PureTalk. US Mobile’s Dark Unlimited Premium is QCI 8 also.
QCI 9 is assigned to Business Unlimited Starter, the base Unlimited plans for both the postpaid and AT&T Prepaid brands, Cricket Select Unlimited, Cricket Smart Unlimited, other known MVNOs, and all AT&T brands once their premium data buckets have been exhausted. US Mobile Dark Star on plans besides Unlimited Premium are all QCI 9 by default now but Unlimited Flex and By the Gig have paid QCI 8 add-ons available.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile uses QCI 6, 7, and 9 for phone plans.
QCI 6 goes to all branded plans, both postpaid and prepaid, besides those with Essentials in the name. Google Fi has QCI 6 as well.
QCI 7 is applied to Essentials branded plans as well as all other known MVNOs.
QCI 8 is not used for phone plans, it's used for on device hotspot and for data only plans with 30GB of more data.
QCI 9 is for those who have exhausted the data in their buckets. T-Mobile's Mobile Internet 30GB plan is also QCI 9.
I don't really want to add home internet plans to this list as this subreddit is for phone plans.
I first learned about data priority reading on Coverage Critic and from posts here and elsewhere. If you wish to test your QCI class yourself, you can follow this guide if you have a rooted Android phone.

USA [Guide] How I Finally Unlocked 5G UC & 5G Standalone (SA) on Google Fi (iPhone 17 Pro / iOS 27.0.1) via T-Mobile Wholesale Profile + Fresh eSIM
⚠️ DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any damage, data loss, or bricked basebands. Modifying carrier profiles involves system-level changes.** Always verify terminal commands yourself before blindly copying and pasting them from a Reddit post**! Proceed at your own risk.
🏆 CREDITS: A huge shoutout to u/Admirable-Meeting-90 for figuring out the specific GID/ICCID override method that tricks iOS into favoring the Wholesale bundle, and for creating the developer fork of CarrierSIM that makes this possible! Also, full credit to Vladimir B (vlw) for creating the original CarrierSIM project.
If you are using Google Fi on an iPhone, you know that Fi defaults to Apple’s generic TMobile_MVNO_US (or fallback Carrier) bundle. Because of that, you miss out on the 5G UC (Ultra Capacity) network indicator and the 5G Standalone (SA) toggle is normally locked out.
After extensive testing with CarrierSIM v7 on an iPhone 17 Pro (iOS 27.0.1) in a Dual-SIM setup (MetroPCS + Google Fi), I finally got both 5G UC and 5G Standalone unlocked and active!
The Plot Twist: Why a Fresh eSIM Provisioning Mattered
On my original Google Fi eSIM, applying the TMobile_Wholesale_US profile immediately unlocked 5G UC, VoLTE, and VoWiFi registration, but the 5G Standalone toggle in iOS Settings stayed greyed out with:
"Your current SIM does not support 5G Standalone. Contact your carrier for more information."
Diagnostic logs from CommCenter showed 5G SA: disabled (baseband), meaning the older eSIM lacked the SA entitlement bit from Google Fi's servers. However, after briefly moving my line to an Android device and transferring back to the iPhone 17 Pro—which forced Google Fi to generate and download a brand-new eSIM (new ICCID)—reapplying the TMobile_Wholesale_US profile unlocked 5G Standalone immediately after a single-SIM reboot!
Step-by-Step Guide (Including Dual-SIM Fixes)
If you want to replicate this using CarrierSIM v7 on a Mac, here is the exact workflow that avoids all USB stream drops and dual-SIM rescan errors:
1. Get a Fresh Google Fi eSIM (If 5G SA is Baseband-Locked)
If your current Google Fi eSIM keeps 5G Standalone greyed out even after applying Wholesale, force a fresh eSIM download (re-provisioning via the Google Fi app or transferring back to the iPhone so a new ICCID is issued).
Go to Settings → General → About and verify your Google Fi line says T-Mobile 72.0 (the TMobile_MVNO_US baseline), not the generic Carrier 72.0 profile.
Tip: If you are stuck on Carrier 72.0 after a reset, toggling Airplane Mode won't fix it. Go to Settings → Cellular, tap your Google Fi line, and toggle Turn On This Line OFF and back ON to force CommCenter to reload the SIM.
2. Isolate the Google Fi Line (Crucial for Dual-SIM Users) If you have a second T-Mobile network SIM/eSIM active (like T-Mobile Postpaid, MetroPCS, Mint, etc.), iOS will tangle the carrier bundles in cache during the rescan and throw RuntimeError: The rescan did not resolve an untouched system carrier bundle.
Go to Settings → Cellular and temporarily turn your secondary SIM line OFF so only Google Fi is active.
Turn Wi-Fi completely OFF in Settings → Wi-Fi (prevents macOS Wi-Fi sync from hijacking the USB log stream when CommCenter restarts, which causes GidRescanConnectionError).
Set Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock to Never and keep the iPhone unlocked on the Home Screen.
3. Clean Up Old Rules & Reset macOS USB
Connect your iPhone to your Mac via USB.
In your Mac Terminal, reset the Apple USB multiplexer so the diagnostic stream doesn't drop mid-run:sudo killall -9 usbmuxd AMPDevicesAgent AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent
Unplug the iPhone for 5 seconds and plug it back in.
If you previously installed Wholesale on an older Google Fi eSIM, use CarrierSIM's cleanup option (Option 15 / 16 or --undo-gid1 <path-to-old-run>) to purge the old ICCID rule from your catalog first.
4. Install T-Mobile Wholesale (Option 14)
Launch CarrierSIM and select Option 14 (Automatic T-Mobile Wholesale installation · USB only), or run:python3 carrier.py --tmobile-wholesale --sims <your_sim_slot>
Confirm the preview (y). The tool will automatically discover Google Fi's GID1 rule (310240_GID1-4276), qualify your specific ICCID for TMobile_Wholesale_US.bundle, and verify Apple's cryptographic signature.
Note: It will pause for 60–90 seconds while CommCenter restarts. Do not unplug the phone!
Save your runs/ folder! Back up the generated runs/YYYYMMDD-XXXXXX-gid-XXXXXX folder somewhere safe so you can cleanly undo the rule before future iOS updates.
5. Reboot Before Re-Enabling Your Second SIM
Unplug your iPhone and reboot it while your second SIM is still turned OFF (so iOS Dual-SIM restrictions don't block the initial baseband handshake).
Once booted, go to Settings → Cellular → Google Fi → Voice & Data:
Switch from 5G Auto to 5G On (stops the phone from bouncing back to LTE when idle).
Toggle 5G Standalone to ON!
Double-check Settings → Cellular → Google Fi → Cellular Data Network to ensure your APN is still set to h2g2.
Turn your secondary eSIM line, Wi-Fi, and normal Auto-Lock timer back on.
6. Prevent iOS from Reverting Your Profile (DNS Block) Official iOS carrier settings updates will instantly overwrite this custom profile and lock 5G SA again. If you ever get a prompt on your phone to update carrier settings, always tap "Not Now".
To block these updates silently on your home network, blackhole Apple's update servers using Pi-hole or AdGuard Home. For Pi-hole v6, SSH into your server and run:
pihole deny appldnld.apple.com mesu.apple.com
(Note: Blocking mesu.apple.com also blocks standard iOS system update notifications, keeping you safe from accidental OTA updates wiping your carrier bundle).

USA Good2Go continues to bill ported out#
PSA: Good2Go may or may not close your account when you port out.
I've ported out 2 lines. one auto closed itself, meaning I can still login to that account, but there's no phone nor service connected to that account. The other I didn't check and It billed me about 2 weeks after it was ported out on it's normal billing date.
So If you port out from Good2Go, be sure to remove auto-renewal and remove Credit Card.
Good2go does not seem to be responding. I get put on hold for 30 mins and then forced to leave a voicemail and they will "call me back."

My $300/yr ATT plan expires tomorrow. What should I do?
Should I switch to the $240/yr plan? Or something else? I understand I may need to port out then back in to get the &240. Is there a good short term port or another year long good plan?

USA Which plan work best for me coming from T-Mobile?
I'm currently using the T-Mobile "experience more" family plan, but need to port out. Would like to get some suggestions which mobile plan would work best for me? I use about 40 GB data monthly and my area coverage is best with T-Mobile or At&t service based on coveragemap website. Preferably, would like to have international roaming available, but I could always get a esim for the country I'm traveling to.
Should I go with US mobile or Mint in this case? And should I be worried about have less data priority?

USA [good2gomobile] - Don't think I've ever seen a company try so hard to lose customers
It's like they're being run by a broken AI in India.
The website is riddled with bugs that interfere with signing up, choosing plans and making payments.
Reporting the bugs has no effect.
It appears they're still refusing to reveal which carrier they recently transferred everyone to during their recent 'network upgrade' outage fiasco. Their SIMs indicate we're on the AT&T network now (west coast USA). That's all I know.
Can't add my new phone to my account because the site produces an error message for every IMEI entered, even the IMEI of the phone I'm currently using with the service.
When the phone service (the actual tower communication) is working, it generally works as expected. I suspect that's because it's the one part of the process they aren't in charge of.

USA How do US carriers detect hotspot usage?
Hi,
I'm a noob to the US carrier system. In Australia we don't have a distinction of hotspot data, but it seems to be the case in the US where you might get an unlimited plan but only 10GB of hotspot usage.
How are they detecting hotspot use? I thought it was opaque to the carrier?
Using iPhone.

Which is for me?
I asked AI and they told me total wireless.. idk
I will be using 100-200gb a month. I will be tethered to my PC for online gaming (can't have home internet where I am at all) so what ever carrier will give me the most reliable connection and least chance of being depriotized in Connecticut and which ever switches towers the lease since I know in some games when switching cell towers I get dc'd in game.
Ai told me Verizon would put me on a tower and stick me there idk never even heard of total wireless before. Also 4k streaming is important
I was originally going metro until I asked ai

USA International calling caller ID
What carriers display your caller ID properly when calling from USA to Europe?
Tello often shows up as a different number every time in Poland, for example. Anyone have a better experience with MobileX or US Mobile? What about Total or Visible?

No more 5g uw or good speed
I ported under their byod $20 promo deal about 2 months ago. For first couple of days the internet speed was really good. Used to Show about 300+ down speed and used to show 5guw constantly by my network. For last couple of weeks the speed is very very bad. Its around 20-25 down and never shows 5g uw, only shows 5g, no matter where i am.
Why is that?
I have iphone 14 pro max and did do network reset couple times from settings as it was suggested in some places.

QUO Phone Service Restricted Porting Out My Number
I use QUO and was porting out a cell number I have with them. The receiving telecom service for porting in my number requires the SID service account number. QUO informed me they no longer provide SID account numbers. I will lose my number now which is unacceptable.

How do I go about this?
I just paid off the remaining balance on my phone with att.
I hear I now need to wait 48 hours before I can get my phone unlocked. How do I do this after the 48 hours?
I want to switch to Metro using this same phone and keep my same number. What is the full process on doing this?
I'm switching from att unlimited elite on my s24u to metro unlimited premium if that mattered

USA Temporary US number that works in Canada during canada to US transition
Hi,
I am based out of Canada and will likely be moving to the states in a few months. I currently have a Canadian number from work with all my daily life accounts off of it. I was hoping to have my US friend get a number / sim for me next month that can help me transition off all my Canadian accounts to that number, and act as a few days worth of filler in the US before I get my new US number from work. I will then port it to a long term really cheap secondary line and use my work number as the primary driver in US.
I’m aware of the red pocket $30 annual plan but the GSMA bit is a deal breaker (personal handset not AT&T white listed) hence the need to hunt of a stopgap “temporary” number until I can move to the Res pocket plan (on the new device from work). Could you pls recommend me a cheap plan for the transition? I don’t need many minutes as such.
