Isnt firing squad duty kinda enotional damage for normal people. Besides, whats wrong with the guillotine?

u/Hogan4121401 8d ago

It's a french thing. Firing Squad is way more American.

47

u/HaLordLe Nuclear Carpet Bombing Enthusiast 8d ago

also more military

57

u/Hogan4121401 8d ago

Yes, but death by firing Squad is historically a "honorable" way to get executed as a soldier. Criminals and dishonored soldiers were therefore killed trough a single shot from behind or trough hanging.

15

u/HaLordLe Nuclear Carpet Bombing Enthusiast 8d ago

good point. I do wonder what the criterium for choosing firing squad would then be, given that anything that justifies someone getting shot is propably also pretty dishonourable

33

u/Hogan4121401 8d ago

Well take a look at the french marshal Michel Ney who even commanded his own firing squad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Ney

I think it’s specific to the UCMJ that the death penalty for his charges is firing squad. Had he been charged with terrorism I think it would’ve been hanging, but they didn’t charge him with terrorism for some reason.

6

u/SomewhatInept 8d ago

The reason is that it was the Obama years.

2

u/HaLordLe Nuclear Carpet Bombing Enthusiast 8d ago

Ah, thank you for the clarification

29

u/DavidBrooker 8d ago

While the guillotine is a French thing, the French also have a long history of fusillading (the French term for firing squad), especially in military contexts.

5

u/Hogan4121401 8d ago

I know but from a maga point of view there is nothing more american than gettin shot.

He had a much higher body count.

u/unfunnysexface F-17 Truther 8d ago

The TV camera didn't make it they dragged them out so fast.

18

u/DavidBrooker 8d ago

While it's absolutely emotionally damaging, it also has a long military precident, to the point that there's a significant amount of ettiquite regarding it. For instance, an officer being executed may be offered the honor of giving the order to fire. Whereas standing the condemned with their back to the firing squad is considered dishonorable (representing cowardice).

31

u/Slackslayer 8d ago

I'm sure it is, and that's all the more reason there should be an executioner's draft among a population that supports the death penalty.

17

u/SomewhatInept 8d ago

Dude, you'll have a hard time sifting through the volunteer offers for this one.

8

u/Teddy_Radko Cleared hot by certified ASS FAC 8d ago

Like jury duty 🫠

21

u/RavenTheRaptorX 8d ago

It is allegedly the solider doesn’t load the rifle the officer does and includes a blank. The firing squad knows there is a blank rifle but not who has the blank.

45

u/RonaldWRailgun 8d ago

The fact that we need this stupid mechanism for people, soldiers even in this specific case, to cope with the idea that they killed a man, who was posing no threat to them in the moment, maybe is a good example of how hypocritical everyone involved with the process is, and why we shouldn't have a death penalty.

4

u/RavenTheRaptorX 8d ago

Fair but I’m not sure life in prison is a great mercy either.

27

u/RonaldWRailgun 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's not. And maybe some people don't deserve mercy.

But, unlike death, it's reversible: death sentence is not something we can trust to an imperfect system.

Here's the thing, I believe in the right to self-defense, even by using lethal force, so I only accept the State to dole out a death sentence when the existence of the person is an imminent threat to the State or the people near them. Imagine we captured Bin Laden alive, it would have been reasonable to assume that his presence even in a supermax prison would have put everyone around him at a realistic risk of being attacked, suicide bombed etc. Fine, give him the death sentence because you are acting to protect your own institutions.

Same reasoning for a deposed dictator that still has a following, or even a Cartel Leader with the resources to attack a prison. I justify those cases as "self-defense".

In every other case, life in prison is enough.

Cold blooded murder is still cold-blooded murder, even if I won't lose sleep for the person at the other end of a needle, noose, rifle or whatever. Being against the death sentence is not about them, it's about me.

2

u/RavenTheRaptorX 8d ago

I don’t think we need to sprint the death sentence I don’t think the judge needs to car dry a sword (cause the man who passes the sentence should carry it out) still sixty years in prison then ā€œwhoops we were wrong you’re freeā€ is that merciful or fair? Their life is over then. Obviously I’m using an extreme but as you said it’s an imperfect system.

Anyway I think we’re getting too credible. Uh so citizenship guarantees service?

13

u/Momsinfatuation 8d ago

Not if you volunteer for it. I’m sure there’s no shortage of service members that would gladly line up for the chance to pull a trigger. Plus one bullet is blanks so there is ambiguity if you really killed him.

6

u/Forte69 8d ago

They switched to wax bullets, because with a blank you can tell the difference with recoil

1

u/Teddy_Radko Cleared hot by certified ASS FAC 8d ago

Really? A blank? Are you serious or is this a NCD moment rn? Most blanks i know of require a muzzle mounted firing adapter. Youd also likely notice if you handled the ammunition or fired it. I imagine i could smell the difference even. Im basing this my experience in the armed forces. we had red wooden plug blank 556 ammo and a quite chonky blank firing adapter.

10

u/kermitthebeast 8d ago

That's how they do it for civilian. I'm not a gun guy but you don't need an adapter to fire a single round because you didn't need the compensation in the gas to cycle the next round

2

u/Teddy_Radko Cleared hot by certified ASS FAC 8d ago

Oh that makes perfect sense. My experience was of the automatic kind šŸ˜…. Theres also a visual aspect to it where its important for exercise safety to see how the gun is setup before aiming and pulling the trigger at a meat and bones opfor.

8

u/wormoworm 8d ago

Of the 12 rifles, between 1 and 4 are randomly loaded with blanks. Source: Ryan Macbeth video from recently. The protocol is old though - from 1944.

The US only used it once in WW2 iirc and possibly never since? Weird how much work and thought went into something thats been so infrequently used.

8

u/unfunnysexface F-17 Truther 8d ago

That's a military hallmark

7

u/specialist456 8d ago

Bfa is only for firing multiple rounds, although without it you could still probably tell if you had a blank because your rifle wouldnt cycle.

8

u/Attaxalotl Su-47 "Berkut" Enjoyer 8d ago

I think they still use bolt-actions for that very reason.Ā

10

u/onrocketfalls 8d ago

It’s a thing with firing squads in the US in the past, ostensibly to give all the shooters peace of mind through doubt that they weren’t the one who killed the dude even though I assume most people wouldn’t care. The guns are given to them loaded, it’s a whole process (or at least it was), it’s not like you bring your own. Not sure how they account for someone who was able to tell their shot was a blank, if at all.

0

u/Teddy_Radko Cleared hot by certified ASS FAC 8d ago edited 8d ago

Such a weird concept. Tbh id hate the uncertainty more. Better to have it be a careful selected, volunteer only thing and with some sort of mandatory follow up with a psychiatrist (assuming its not woke ofc).

Edit: when i use woke it should be understood as a mildly sarcastic critisism of society today where a lot of perfectly reasonable things are called woke as a sort of slur. Seeking and receiving mental health help from professionals is a overwhelmingly a good thing.

u/onrocketfalls 8d ago

2

u/Teddy_Radko Cleared hot by certified ASS FAC 8d ago

It might not have come across but im using the word woke sarcastically here. Seeing a psychiatrist is not a bad thing.

3

u/onrocketfalls 8d ago

You never know nowadays.

4

u/unfunnysexface F-17 Truther 8d ago

You only fire once, and are given the rifle mag loaded but empty chamber.

6

u/ZenPyx 8d ago

They mostly use bolt-action rifles in non-military firing squads in the US. We've not seen a military firing squad for 80 years, so it'll be somewhat interesting (if not a bit horrifying) to see what they pick.

My money is on Hegseth making them use some kind of stupid gun like the Desert Eagle so they can be real tough guys

1

u/cryptolyme 8d ago

Or a machine gun. They want it to be as gruesome as possible.

1

u/Lord-Fondlemaid 8d ago

Kim Jong Un executed one of his generals using an anti-aircraft cannon.

Given how much Trump loves dictators, it’s just a matter of time.

4

u/moment-momentum Got droned for the cause 8d ago

This is real, it's also the same with lethal injection. More than one button, not all connected. Standard protocol to let executioners off the hook with reasonable doubt.

2

u/Teddy_Radko Cleared hot by certified ASS FAC 8d ago

This is wild to me. I really did learn about this today. Still feels wrong to me. I genuinely think the uncertainty would harm me more than definitely knowing.

3

u/moment-momentum Got droned for the cause 8d ago

Absolutely same. Either do it, or don't. I am adamantly against the death penalty, however if I did anything with that magnitude, waffling back and forth between if I actually did it or not would be worse than having to come to terms.

3

u/Turtledonuts Dear F111, you were close to us, you were interesting... 8d ago

Given that they're doing a whole "honor and tradition" bs thing, I imagine they will be using some big heavy wood stock battle rifles, probably the last couple of good looking functional garands they can find in an armory.

Keggy wants to make it all band of brothers and high testosterone, so he will probably have the squad be wearing dress uniform and carrying shiny polished rifles and what not.

-6

u/ErrantAlgae F-16 you sleek sleek beauty 8d ago

I think you mean one round is live the rest are blanks

2

u/BoleroMuyPicante 8d ago

They'll likely go with combat veterans who have been in fire fights before, and it'll almost certainly be volunteers. I'm fine with this POS eating a bullet, but livestreaming it as civilian entertainment is deeply unsettling.

-11

u/Shirocchi_ 8d ago

If you gonna cry about shooting a mass shooter, maybe the military isn't for you. Any real soldier would literally DIE to have the opportunity to shoot this mf

5

u/LordBrandon 8d ago

Are you volunteering?

-6

u/Shirocchi_ 8d ago

If I were a US soldier, sure.

0

u/Cryorm Princessipality of Korschovo 8d ago

Every vet I know, including myself, would fucking kill to be on the this firing squad. This thing that killed its brothers in arms, betrayed his country, and broke its oaths is the antithesis of the modern military. He doesn't even deserve the courtesy of a blank shot loaded, he deserves to be strapped to a stockade and used as an artillery target.

17

u/LordBrandon 8d ago

I'm sure you could get someone to skin him alive on TV and feed him parts of his own brain. An execution is a solmn duty of the state. Not an opportunity for you to watch someone you hate squeel. That's what ISIS does.

5

u/llamafarmadrama 8d ago

Agreed. Livestreaming an execution is barbaric and the kind of shit ISIS did.

Once again Kegsbreath and the rest of the current US administration proves to be a stain on the reputation of the US and the rest of the civilised world.

-6

u/Shirocchi_ 8d ago

Exactly this, fuck this islamist fuck

1

u/DavidBrooker 8d ago

They're not speaking towards the crime and if it warrants execution, they're speaking towards the moral authority of the state to carry out such an act.

I think it's almost trivial to say that there are people who deserve to die, but it's a much greater barrier to say there are governments who should be allowed to execute. And much less to stream it live on the internet.
