It's called "Bayonet-prod" in-universe as it combines the features of the bayonet and a cattle prod (and the taser too actually); it isn't really used to directly stab/thrust, one simply gets it close enough to the enemy and let the quick and powerful electric discharge do the damage.

It's a specially-designed bayonet type for dealing with a specific type of opponent during a very specific era in case they ever get too close (the invaders mentioned there are basically borderline eldritch robot-aliens)

Funny you mentioned "dowsing rod" considering one of this unit's reference being heavily associated with dowsing rods
