It's both cool and ridiculous.

But if we really look at most hobbies, they become ridiculous.

People blow, spit, hum, and lip-fart into twenty different configurations of bent brass pipe to make sounds.

People wear colorful costumes, hit balls with sticks, and run around.

People make extremely expensive sticks out of exotic materials, carry around a whole bag of them, and hit little balls around acres of land unnaturally manicured entirely for that purpose.

People make little models of kings, queens, and more and play fake war with rules.

I, too have trouble with my hydrostatic lubricant but once I’m up to steam can happily be ridden by 6-8 bearded gentlemen at a time.

Steam engines and boilers are really interesting from an engineering perspective and making them by hand requires learning some old skills. Also, if you mess up a boiler it can explode. Yeah…it’s maybe kind of a nerdy hobby, but I have total respect for the people who get into it and think it’s wholesome.

I have been to an event for these trains. It was really awesome. Super friendly retirees that made it as a passion project. It is a bit cringe but also totally not. Would recommend
