AD Weiberg Rumors

There are multiple sources claiming that university leadership may be considering firing Athletic Director Chad Weiberg.

Personally, I am very disappointed to hear this, unless there is some deeper yet-to-be-revealed scandal he's involved with.

If he’s involved in a scandal that harms the University, fine. But if its the BOR and their bullshit antics, fuck them all to hell.

Why? Based on what I know he has done a fantastic job across the board. Just outta curiosity, what is the case for firing Weiberg because I have no idea?

I agree - Weiberg has made fantastic hires. The rumor is that there are key donors and/or administrators who are frustrated with the contract Weiberg handed to Gundy in 2024 after a disastrous season. In fairness to Weiberg, the contract featured a drastically reduced buyout.[1]

But what would any other reasonable AD done in his shoes? Gundy had a tremendous, unprecedented 18-year bowl appearance streak, with one bad season following the upending of the previous college football landscape by NIL and lifted transfer restrictions. If I recall correctly, Gundy's contract before ran through 2027 anyway, so it's not like Gundy had to accept the renegotiated terms.

The Tulsa World posted a Berry Tramel story about Weiberg's job security yesterday, and a couple of OSU sports blogs put out information corroborating it today. Truly bizarre tbh.

That makes no sense. He just got a contract. Plus how in the hell could he be doing his job better?

I don’t live in Stillwater and I’m not as connected with the OSU politics as much as many of you might be.

Can someone explain to me why the University leadership and Board of Regents seems so completely dysfunctional??

I don’t think those rumors are credible. Where did you hear them?

BOR (aka Jimmy) feeling upset: Tulsa World “The circumvention alienated members of the Board of Regents and alienated high-level financial backers who felt standard institutional oversight was ignored.”

He landed the best young coach & qb in the country.. if he went against institutional oversight & donors to achieve that, it just shows he's better at his job than they are.

It’s over Gundy. Jimmy Harrel wanted him gone after the 2024 season and had his feelings hurt when Weiberg didn’t fire him. He’s had it out for him ever since, and he’s trying to get him out before Kevin Stitt’s term as governor ends in December. The new governor will appoint new BOR members as their terms expire, and Jimmy Harrel has to stage his coup now before 2 members will be replaced in 2027. Harrel was on the board back in the 90s and was ousted because he’s been historically difficult on certain issues. There are other rumors close to the program that say if Weiberg is fired Eric Morris is gone. One of the things that brought Morris to Stillwater is his friendship with Weiberg, as they both worked together at Texas Tech. It’s likely that Weiberg’s camp leaked the story to Berry Tramel to stoke outrage amongst the fan base, who love Weiberg and are already nervous about losing Morris to a bigger program.

I appreciate that insight.

That guy could never show his face in Payne County again if Weiburg does get fired.

He’s an 85 year old man, so I’m guessing he wouldn’t care much. Hopefully the story getting out about what Harrel is trying to do is enough to stop it from happening.

Surely.. I can't imagine any other board members want their names dragged into it

I’m counting on that. You can always email the board and let your voice be heard: board@okstate.edu
