Hello,

I am new to odoo, still setting it up, i am on odoo20, enterprise edition, standard plan

1) So regarding the 'pdf quote builder' for quotations, i have the template ready in 'canva' and when i try to add form fields on the blank spaces, i face these problems:

-the alignment is not correct
-the font of the template and the dynamic field is not the same
-the size/colour of the font is not the same

can you pls help me on this, like what platform do i use to place the form fields, and who determines the font(size etc) odoo or the platform where we place the form field

pl suggest the best platform u guys use to place the form fields or is there any other way?

2) also on the commercials page would i be able to change the layout of it completely(like for invoices i need a formal clean layout, and for quotations i need a attractive one)

experienced odoo'ers pls share your insights on this

Just bought Odoo – how to set up CRM for a company split into many separate teams?

• Upvotes

My company just purchased Odoo and I’ve been put in charge of setting it up. I’m fairly new to it, so I’d love some advice before I start building things I’ll regret later.

Our situation:

  • The company is split into several work groups that operate pretty independently (different clients, different pipelines, different processes)
  • Each group should mainly see and manage its own leads and opportunities
  • Managers and leadership still need an overall view across all groups

What I’m trying to figure out:

  1. CRM structure: Should I use one Sales Team per group, separate pipelines/stages, or go as far as multi-company? Where do you draw the line?
  2. Users and permissions: What’s the cleanest way to handle access rights so people only see their team’s records? Are the standard groups (“own documents only” / “all documents”) enough, or will I need record rules?
  3. Common mistakes to avoid in the first setup?

Odoo.sh Alternatives

We are looking for Odoo.sh alternatives. It is becoming more and more expensive for our clients, especially with v20 charging for employee records. Based on our research, we came across some alternatives. We are inclined to host on DigitalOcean plus oec.sh. Any ideas or feedback?

I am a java developer turned small business owner and i want to ask some questions about implementing Odoo in my business.

So I've inherited a 40 year old hardware from my father and we need to update some of its processes in order to keep being competitive, specially its ancient IT systems (We quote orders in pen and paper).

Given we already are profitable, and the business has endured for decades the system I will be building (be it with Odoo, another ERP or good old fashioned coding) needs to be:

  1. Independent from any corporate decisions, billing or overhead. (I already loathe my landlords, i wont be subjected to a digital landlord holding my business hostage)
  2. Scalable and compatible with Horizontal scaling once i open a digital storefront (Big inexperience here i will expand concerns later)
  3. Robust branch and HQ inventory (Both tracking depleting stock, QR codes for products, restocking and hardening against internal embezzlement)
  4. In-house repair quotes ledger connected to our price lists and technical processes (beyond parts, i will need the ability to bill jobs like brazing with silver solder as an item for example)
  5. Long term stability and support (i want the work that I do today to last at least a decade, and I'm not eager to be emergency patching or handling deprecation issues while also running the business)
  6. User hierarchies, i do not want to give access to our *accounting or contracts* to unrelated employees.
  7. CRM, we have some established customers and manually loading every detail every time we need to do a taxable bill we suffer.

My plan was to set up a containerized Odoo community instance running on a homelab for internal use, and then either pivot into buying more hardware or rent computing if needed to be, so my big questions are these:

  • Do i even need to worry about large spikes on user traffic when operating your own digital storefront?
  • If so, does Odoo community edition have the logic to handle multiple docker instances running either locally, in the cloud or both? (In order to prevent issues like selling the same item twice to two customers for example)
  • Is it a good business/tech practice the idea to run my own servers plus cloud computing in parallel?
  • Is the Odoo 19 Development Cookbook a good resource to answer these questions?
  • When printing QR codes, which is the best printer to buy price to performance wise when working with Odoo barcodes?
  • When starting from zero to set up Odoo, the version 19 or 20 is the best for long term stability plus features?
  • Can you keep a ledger of sold orders independently if they get fiscally declared or not?

I know that a good chunk of the needs are already met by Odoo but i need some orientation before taking the plunge.

Thank you for reading and any input, opinions, counsel or rebuke is appreciated.

Let AI fill my Odoo timesheets from my git history

Filling timesheets was the task I always skipped, so I built a small tool that lets AI do it:

- Every Friday at 17:00 a cron job checks Odoo for missing days

- It reads my git commits for those days and hands them to Claude

- Claude picks the right Odoo task and writes a short description a project manager can read

- On days with no commits, it guesses what I was working on from a short "current focus" note I keep

- A desktop notification opens a local page where I tweak the text and click "Fill Odoo"

Two small markdown files steer the AI. One is personal: your role and what you're working on this week. The other is shared by the team and says what belongs to each Odoo task. A designer, a backend dev and a devops engineer can share the same task list and still get their work filed correctly.

It works with standard Odoo Timesheets over XML-RPC (v13 to 18, Community or Enterprise) and needs only Python 3.11. The AI part uses the Claude CLI. Without it, the tool falls back to cleaned-up commit messages. A first-run wizard asks for your Odoo login and project and sets everything up.

https://github.com/Mrterrestrial/git2odoo-timesheet

Feedback welcome, especially from people whose Odoo setup has locked periods or approval flow

Need to start

I'm a beginner developer. When I came across Odoo, I really liked it, but I didn't understand the best way to get started and keep learning. I tried watching YouTube tutorials, but they didn't work for me. I'd like to find a more practical way to learn. I need some advice based on your experience.

Experienced Python developer tried Odoo and couldn’t get comfortable with it. Am I missing something?

I’m a software engineer with 10+ years of experience, mostly with Python (Django, FastAPI), PostgreSQL and more recently TypeScript, NestJS and React.

I recently had a great job opportunity at an Odoo-focused company. Good people, good salary, everything seemed right.

So I spent several evenings learning Odoo and working on their coding challenge. But the more I worked with it, the less I liked it.

Coming from Django, I kept recognizing familiar concepts, but everything felt more restrictive, implicit and unnecessarily complicated. The XML views, inheritance mechanisms and some apparent code smells gave me a pretty poor developer experience.
At times, it felt like developing features for a less enjoyable version of Django Admin.

I understand Odoo’s value for businesses, and I know there’s an entire industry of skilled developers working with it. I’m nobody to judge a mature ecosystem after just a few evenings but I simply couldn’t imagine spending my working days in this ecosystem.

Finally I decided to quit the application process despite I liked the company and overall job conditions.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Has anyone coming from Django or other frameworks had a similar experience? Does it get better once you understand Odoo, or is it simply a different kind of development that isn’t for everyone?

Real-time HubSpot free → Odoo Enterprise sync — possible?

hey guys so the company's been on hubspot free forever (started way before all the pricing changes lol) and we also run odoo enterprise on our end. We've got data in hubspot that needs to get into odoo directly and in real time, like as soon as it comes into hubspot it should show up in odoo, instead of someone manually typing everything over, is there any way to do that and if so how? we're not looking to upgrade hubspot if we can avoid it, any tools or workarounds you've used would be awesome, thx 🙏

I work as a business advisor at Odoo’s office in Dubai. I joint this community recently and found that so many of you had multiple concerns and questions regarding odoo.

So, if you have a business or a company that you’re considering Odoo for, and you wanna know if Odoo’s system could help you, book my calendar for a quick 1-hour consultation meeting (free of charge).

P.S. I can only speak English and Arabic.

is this true guys? (odoo V20)

this is the message i got from the odoo ai chatbot, is it really true??

"Here is the breakdown of how you can use these apps without paying for a license for every single employee.

  1. The Golden Rule: "Employee" vs. "User"

Employee Record (Free & Unlimited): You can create 1,000 employees in the Employees module. As long as they do not have a login (email/password) to the Odoo backend, they are completely free.

Internal User (Paid): This is someone who has a login to the Odoo backend to perform work, click buttons, and see data. This is what you pay for in your Standard Plan."

So i can create employee records just for storage purposes and enter any leaves etc on their behalf, and i wont be charged?

or the 'employees', 'time-off', 'recruitment', 'expenses' technically useless if i dont plan on buying any extra licenses for employees, am on odoo enterprise(odoo online) standard plan

btw we are a small business under 20 employees, if not pls tell any workarund , or else what other app or website u suggest for tracking employees for free...

Stuck with Claude MCP ODOO

Hi,

Background: I connected Claude with Odoo (big task as a newbie in this domain ) by setting up the API key and adding that information in claude_config.json

Now, I can pull up the data I want , add some data when needed , modify the data , delete as well from my odoo database .

Basically, I have odoo.sh , can do CRUD operations on Dev branch as a test.

The tricky things I am facing are

1.I am trying to create a website just by giving the commands to claude like (install the website app , create a website for it services and giving all the information asked) but it says cannot create a website from scratch , asks me to install the apps needed first , can I not install apps by giving the commands , or is it a few apps that needs to be installed manually where as I installed Crm, sales , inventory , contacts just by giving the commands to claude.

  1. I installed the apps manually (website, ecommerce (diff example), surveys , blog )

Now , when I try to edit the website , through claude it says "safety review needed"

When I checked with this error that was throwing on Claude desktop, I noticed that the inbuilt AI agent for website is blocking my external request for the changes on website.

Everytime i run it again it says the same "Review , safety, error"

Now, when I looked it up it shows that I need to buy tokens which is IAP for the "AI AGENT FOR WEBSITE"

HELPP!

How do I go about this.. any one in the same situation or anyone with prior experience with this situation please let me know how can I go from here.

My goal : want to create websites for ourself and for the clients just by giving commands and getting our work slightly easier than the manual setup.

Thanks in advance.

Experienced Odoo dev wanted for $4/hr on Upwork. Is this real life?

Just saw a job post from an IT company in Saudi Arabia. They want an experienced Odoo developer. Rate: $4/hour.

Are you kidding me?

We're talking about people who've spent years learning Odoo. Implementations, customizations, integrations, migrations, debugging, solving real business problems. And they want to pay less than a coffee per hour.

I get that rates vary by country and experience. But $4/hr for experienced Odoo work? That's not cost optimization. That's exploitation.

Does Upwork have any rules against this? Or is this just the race to the bottom we're all supposed to accept?

Curious what the Odoo community thinks. Is $4/hr reasonable, or are we normalizing garbage rates for skilled talent?

Costing Method for Products with Dynamic BOM? (Odoo 18)

We manufacture doors in Odoo 18 using a dynamic BOM setup. A single finished product can be built using different component combinations depending on customer requirements.

Example:

  • BOM 1: A + B + C → Final cost = $50.00
  • BOM 2: A + F + G → Final cost = $75.00

Because the BOM changes, the actual cost of each manufactured door varies.
We also use lot/serial tracking for every manufactured item, so each finished product needs to carry its true cost based on the exact components used in that specific MO.

Issue #1 — Costing Method
Average Costing (AVCO) doesn’t work for us because we pay sales commissions based on net profit, and the cost must be accurate per unit — not averaged across all production.
I’m trying to figure out whether FIFO would be a better fit for dynamic BOM manufacturing with serial‑tracked finished goods, or if there’s another costing approach in Odoo 18 that handles this more reliably.

Issue #2 — Switching from AVCO → FIFO or other suggested methods.
If FIFO is the better option, what’s the best practice for switching costing methods?

Is it safe to:

  • Create a new product category with FIFO
  • Update the product to use that new category
  • Continue using the same product?

Or is the recommended approach to:

  • Create a new product category
  • Duplicate the product
  • Archive the old AVCO version
  • Use the new FIFO product going forward?

I’ve heard mixed opinions about changing costing methods on active products, especially when lot/serial tracking is involved, so I’d love to hear what others have done successfully.

Anyone dealing with dynamic BOMs + serial tracking — how are you handling costing and transitions between costing methods?

Coding agents are good at using computers. Should business software meet them on the command line?

Something I keep coming back to after months of using Claude Code and Codex daily, and I'm curious how others see it.

The difference between a chatbot and a coding agent isn't really the model. It's that the agent has hands. ChatGPT in a browser tells you what to do; Claude Code or Codex does it, through the same commands we'd type: `cat` to read a file, `grep` to find something, `sed` or an edit tool to change it, run the tests, read the output, try again. Text in, text out, so the agent can check its own work.

That made me look differently at business software. A lot of the effort in adopting an ERP goes into learning the UI: which menu, which filter, which button. That has little to do with being good at accounting or operations. If an agent can do the navigating, the human part shrinks to what actually needs a human: asking the right question, reading the data, and deciding.

The catch is that most business apps give agents bad hands. With Odoo, which I work with, the options are the web UI (built for eyes, not for agents) or the raw RPC API, where the agent has to know internal model and field names, those names change between major versions, and nothing stops a write.

So I've been experimenting with putting a command-line layer in between, built the way a coding agent likes its tools:
- operations named by business meaning, not by database model
- each operation checked against a stock Odoo, so "it ran" means "it did what Odoo itself would do"
- one structured JSON result, with an error code and a suggested fix the agent can act on
- reads by default; writes are opt-in; risky ones need a human confirmation each time
- a small Python library on top, for notebooks (pandas frames) and scheduled routines an agent summarises each morning; it calls the CLI rather than Odoo, so the same checks apply
- bulk configuration as plan/apply, Terraform style: you review the diff, and apply refuses if the plan changed since you looked

Two things I'm still unsure about, and would like opinions on:

  1. Permissions. The agent acts with whatever account it's given, so access control falls back to the ERP's own user rights. Is that enough for a small business, or does an agent need its own narrower layer on top?

  2. Who is this actually for? Developers get it immediately. But the people I'd most like to help are accountants and small-business owners who have never opened a terminal. Is "install an agent, then just talk to it" a realistic ask for them today, or is that still too far?

For full disclosure, I build this layer (odoo-cli, open source), but I'm more interested in whether the idea holds up than in pointing anyone to it.

Barcode Community

¡Gracias!

Laid off after 9 years in Odoo development. Not sure how to feel.

I never thought I’d be writing one of these posts, but here we are.

I’ve been an Odoo developer for 9+ years, and the last 5 of them were at the same company. This month they told us they’re shutting down the India office, and just like that, I was relieved of my duties. No performance issue, no warning signs I picked up on. It was a business decision, and I happened to be on the wrong side of it.

The weird part is how quiet it feels. For years my days had a rhythm: standups, client tickets, migrations, late-night debugging. Now I wake up and there’s no Slack to check.

I’m trying to look at it as a reset. I’ve been wanting to sharpen my skills, work on my own apps, and maybe find a remote techno-functional role with a team I can grow with. But some days that optimism takes more effort than others.

If you’ve been through a layoff after a long stretch at one place, how did you handle the first few weeks? And if anyone knows of teams hiring for Odoo roles (remote), I’m all ears.

Thanks for reading. 🙏

Small (free) module: Resubscribe

If someone clicks unsubscribe, on an email newsletter, by mistake in Odoo, there's no undo.

Odoo walks them through up to three pages. The only way back is a preferences page where they find their list, tick a box and hit Apply. That's a lot to ask of someone who never meant to leave.

So I built a small free module that adds a one-click way back to each page:
• "Are you sure?" gets a Stay on the list button
• "Successfully unsubscribed!" gets Resubscribe
• The preferences page gets "Clicked by mistake? Keep me subscribed"

It only restores the lists that email went to. The Resubscribe link checks the same signed token as Odoo's own unsubscribe link, so nobody can resubscribe someone else, and the module never sends a "come back" email.

Testing it on our own list turned up two other problems. Our preferences page was showing internal test lists to every reader. And our welcome series had no mailing list attached, so its unsubscribe link said "Successfully unsubscribed" and changed nothing.

https://github.com/19prince/mass_mailing_resubscribe

**If this violates the boards rules, let me know and I'll remove it**

Has anyone connected an external LLM API (e.g. Claude) for Helpdesk ticket triage?

We run Odoo 19 Enterprise self-hosted (planning v20) and handle about 6000 Helpdesk tickets a month. The native AI app only offers GPT/Gemini, and as far as I understand v20 moves AI to Odoo's own credits.

Our goal: when a new ticket comes in, AI posts an internal note with:
1. Clarifying questions to ask the customer (if info is missing)
2. Links to related Helpdesk tickets / Project tasks
3. Links to internal instructions stored in SharePoint (Microsoft 365)

Has anyone built something like this with any external LLM API?
Did you use the native AI app + a provider module (Pantalytics, DAADit, etc.), a custom module/automation calling the API directly, or an external tool (n8n, MCP)? I see biggest challange sharepoint documents :(

Any lessons learned or "don't do this" are very welcome. Thanks!

AI Use Cases

Okay, okay, I’m all in on AI. I’ve done some pretty cool stuff with CC, like bulk updates to records—for example, classifying contacts—and even building a custom module that logs certain Action in the chatter.

I have no development background, so being able to build relatively simple things myself gives me a lot of freedom. Feel free to roast me if that sounds boring 😂 I know I’ve only scratched the surface.
We’re on Odoo 16, so there’s no embedded AI as far as I’m aware. For now, I’m actually fine with that: I don’t want our sales team experimenting without boundaries, and I certainly don’t want to give everyone access to our database or GitHub through CC.

But seriously: what AI use cases have brought you real business value? What have you built, or what is your team actually using? What was the idea behind it, and which pain point did it solve?
I imagine there are some real hidden champions in CRM and sales—small, less obvious use cases that make a big difference in day-to-day work.
I’m genuinely curious. Just spare me the “you need to define your requirements before you build” lecture 😉 Obviously, that’s true. I’m here to hear about concrete examples and what actually worked for you.

Odoo: one GL per product category (63 GLs) or just 3 GLs for Sales, COGS and Inventory?

Hello fellow Odooers,

I’m implementing Odoo for a client who deals in thousands of SKUs across 21 product categories. My first thought was to create a separate GL for each category across Sales, COGS and Inventory, which comes to 63 GLs in total (21 each). That way, management gets category-wise sales, COGS, gross margins and inventory straight from the face of the Income Statement or Balance Sheet.

But I know 63 GLs would be a configuration nightmare. Each GL has to be mapped to its product category on the back end so entries post correctly, and every new category means three new GLs. If someone gets the configuration wrong, the reporting stays inaccurate from then on.

The alternative I’m leaning toward is just 3 GLs (one each for Sales, COGS and Inventory) and handling category-level reporting through filters or custom reports. That would also keep the COA and the setup much leaner.

Based on your experience, which would you recommend?

  1. A separate GL per category, or
  2. One GL each for Sales, COGS and Inventory?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Best practices for handling multiple supplier UOMs mapping to a single SKU / sales UOM in Odoo?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently working on a project to map standard Units of Measure (UOM) and suppliers in Odoo to create a single source of truth for our inventory and purchasing.
I’m running into a challenge regarding pack structures and receipting quantities when a single sales SKU can come from different suppliers with different packaging configurations.
The Scenario / Example:
Sales Order (SO): We sell by a specific carton/UOM configuration.
Example: Sales Order line for an item quantity (e.g., selling a specific carton size). The product code originates from our primary supplier.
Actual Supplier & Receipting: However, the stock is sometimes physically supplied by an alternate vendor under a different product code and pack structure.
Example: The alternate supplier uses a different product code and pack structure (e.g., 1x15 instead of the sales pack structure).
The Discrepancy: We sell by a certain carton structure (e.g., quantity of 1), but the supplier’s pack structure is different. This causes a mismatch during receipting where the SO quantity is 1, but the supplier quantity equates to a different number (e.g., 4), leading to incorrect inventory or receipting counts if not handled automatically.
Our Objectives:
1. Automatically and correctly convert units of measure from different suppliers back to our standard sales SKU/UOM inside Odoo.
2. Ensure purchase/receipt quantities are calculated accurately and automatically.
3. Build a scalable mapping system that supports future inventory integrations.
My Questions:
How do you typically structure multi-vendor UOM mappings for the same SKU in Odoo?
Is this best handled using Odoo’s built-in "Units of Measure Categories", custom product packaging, or a module/customization?
Any advice, gotchas, or recommended workflows for automated conversion during the purchase-to-receipt process would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Move from Odoo Enterprise to Community and OCA

Hi everyone,

We currently have an Odoo Enterprise subscription, and are looking to migrate to a Community install with OCA apps, but we are struggling to work out what OCA apps we can use to replace the Enterprise ones.

We currently have the following apps installed:

  • Discuss
  • Calendar
  • Appointments
  • To Do
  • Knowledge
  • Contacts
  • CRM
  • Sales
  • Dashboards
  • Subscriptions
  • Accounting
  • Documents
  • Project
  • Planning
  • Helpdesk
  • Surveys
  • Sign
  • Employees

What OCA apps should we install to get as close as possible to the Enterprise functionality of these apps?

Title: Odoo 16 Community (self-hosted) to Odoo Online — How can I migrate my full database without rebuilding everything?

Hello everyone,

I run a retail business and currently use Odoo 16 Community, self-hosted. My system has become slow, and I want to migrate to Odoo Online, ideally to the latest version available.

I'm looking for the simplest and safest way to migrate my existing data without hiring a developer for a complicated migration project.

My current setup:

  • Odoo 16 Community, self-hosted on Contabo.
  • PostgreSQL 12.
  • A ZIP backup of approximately 299 MB, including the filestore.
  • Three POS terminals and one manager.
  • Some custom modules were installed in the past, but I no longer use their functionality because I have replaced it with a separate system.

What I want to achieve:

I want to move to Odoo Online while preserving my existing business data, especially:

  • Products, product variants, SKUs, barcodes, prices, and costs.
  • Customers and suppliers.
  • Purchase orders and purchase history.
  • Sales orders and historical POS transactions, including payments.
  • Inventory quantities, stock movements and inventory valuation.
  • Accounting entries, invoices, vendor bills and payments.
  • Expenses.
  • Loyalty cards and points.
  • Product images, attachments and other related records.

I would strongly prefer to preserve the original database and its relationships rather than export everything to CSV and import it again. Reconstructing the database manually would be risky, especially for historical transactions, accounting and inventory records.

My questions:

  1. Can an Odoo 16 Community database be migrated directly to Odoo Online, or are there restrictions because the source is Community and the target is Odoo Online?
  2. Is there an official migration process or service through Odoo that can handle the database upgrade and migration?
  3. Since I have a full database backup and filestore, is it possible to migrate them without manually rebuilding all the data?
  4. Do I need to remove the old custom modules or uninstall them before migration, even if I no longer use their functionality?
  5. What is the best approach to preserve POS history, accounting, inventory valuation, payments, loyalty points and attachments?
  6. Has anyone successfully completed a similar migration without hiring a developer? If so, what steps did you follow, and what limitations did you encounter?

I'm happy to start with a fresh Odoo Online subscription, but I want to avoid losing historical data or spending weeks reconstructing everything manually.

I'm not looking to migrate custom code or develop new features. My goal is a data-preserving migration from Odoo 16 Community to Odoo Online, with as little manual work as possible.

Any practical advice or firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Odoo best practices: When to move from UI customizations to custom modules?

I’m customizing Odoo 18 using Studio fields, XML/XPath view inheritance, automated actions, and Python server actions.

I’m trying to follow a clean-core approach while keeping customization simple, maintainable, and upgrade-friendly.

Where do you draw the line between UI customizations and custom modules?

Are there particular limitations or risks with XML/XPath extensions, conditional field visibility, or server actions?

I’d especially appreciate insights from people who have maintained these customizations across major Odoo upgrades.
