Wr can definitely be a top 3 in the east when everyone is healthy, not even the star studded Knicks can't touch us. This team has depth, not many teams boast even when they have 5 good starters.
1
Nov 14 '24
we are a top 3 in the east right now
1
u/Alive-Struggle-7924 Nov 15 '24
Right now, yes but the season is still long, but we can maintain the postion.
1
u/Brod24 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
Knicks screwed up by trading for towns. It messed with what made them work in the playoffs
5
u/jwil06 Paolo Banchero Nov 14 '24
I think we gotta give them till January or February though. Teams can figure things out by mid season and get hot
12
u/Biscadosnove OnlyFranz Nov 14 '24
Halliburton is really not it. He's a flashy guy (very) capable of going hot and hit some ridiculous 3s in a row, but he's not a good floor general and it showed yesterday.
Goga was amazing, Franz was really good, JI and AB were huge to start the 4th. Great win over a direct competitor for home court advantage, and we didn't even have our main star!
1
u/thawhole9_69 Doris Burke Nov 15 '24
Didn't Haliburton hit the game winner at the end in their last meeting though?
3
10
u/kyle_cassh Nov 14 '24
I agree and itās really frustrating how much ego he has after being hyped up beyond comprehension. I hope he keeps that fat head of his and continues to come up short and wonder why
30
u/theKimballer Franz Wagner Nov 14 '24
The rest of the game really made up for the turnovers in the first quarter š«”
52
u/boultzboi77 Paolo Banchero Nov 14 '24
AB and JI were HUUUUUGE at the beginning of the 4th
-9
u/Short-Recording587 Wendell Carter Jr. Nov 14 '24
I was hoping Franz was going to complete the alley-oop to JI in the final 20 seconds of the game, but he took the shot instead when the center stepped up to guard him. Would have been cool. Instead, the missed shot turned into fast break points for the Pacers and kept them in the game.
40
u/baremyeboy Nov 14 '24
Goga >>>>> Wendell. When will people see the truth
6
u/thewrongnotes Moritz Wagner Nov 14 '24
Goga amplifies the things that make Magic basketball effective - that being defence, rim protection, and rebounding. He's more of a role player than Wendell, but that's exactly what this team needs.
WCJ is just vaguely good at lots of things without making us noticeably better in any one area of the game.
5
u/Brod24 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
WCJ is a lot better than goga when healthy.Ā
The problem is it's now been two years since he's been healthy. I don't think it's fair to expect it going forward.Ā
0
u/thewrongnotes Moritz Wagner Nov 14 '24
Given his two-way ability, Wendell is still probably the better overall player. But a lot better? I don't think we can say that anymore. And I haven't seen any data to suggest otherwise.
To me it's scenario based when I'd pick one over the other, but with a gun to my head I just prefer what Goga gives the team. We feel like a big team with Goga at center and I can't often say that with WCJ at the position.
1
u/Brod24 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
We used to run our offense through WCJ. He can do a lot more on a basketball court than Goga. Goga gets almost all of his offense from drop offs and put backs. But WCJ, when healthy, does a lot more than that.
But with Anthony Black starting to create his own offense I'm not sure it matters. It allows for more balance. Goga is thriving in a limited role where WCJ often struggles when he's not involved.
1
u/thewrongnotes Moritz Wagner Nov 14 '24
We also used to run our offence through Cole Anthony, but times change. He might be able to do more than Goga but that doesn't equate to more impactful basketball in our team.
The other thing is that even if we discount the injuries, WCJ was a better athlete a couple of years ago before he decided to put on a load of weight. He's a step slower now and has lost the agility and spring that made him really good.
27
u/JordanSchor Nov 14 '24
As I said many, many times last year:
Goga fucks and I'm tired of pretending he doesn't
4
u/themoreyouknow_95 Nov 14 '24
I agree, even without being able to shoot, Goga has such a huge impact on the boards and on defense
I donāt think itās a massive difference and will still say Wendellās underrated due to his low usage role on offensive role, but I donāt want to see Goga lose his minutes once WCJ is back
7
u/Sarkkin Franz Wagner Nov 14 '24
I think Goga fits this lineup better for sure. I think the worry has always been that he clogs the lane on offense for Paulo.
I love Goga though and was pissed last year when he lost his minutes. Our defense never was as good once he was back on the bench.
0
u/Brod24 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
Our defense was better with WCJ on the court last year than with Goga...
1
u/Sarkkin Franz Wagner Nov 14 '24
Admittedly, I am speaking on āfeel.ā Iād be curious of our defensive rating last year from when WCJ went out and when he got back. Youāre correct about our defense being better all-year with WCJ, but it āfeltā like our defense wasnāt as good when he got back.
Feelings can be very subjective and Gogaās highlight reel blocks can and did influence it for sure. I actually like WCJ much more than most Magic fans on here. I think both have their place in the lineup especially against big/small lineup teams.

Sooooo much Papa Johnās this week š
3
u/Acceptable_Song_2177 Nov 14 '24
Any pointers on what to do if your zoned papa Johnās doesnāt accept the Magicwin promo code? I thought at first it was a glitch to start the year but now they just decided not to honor it.
3
u/310410celleng Nov 14 '24
Like most things chain, it all comes down to the local franchisee.
The Papa Johns in my area won't even deliver to my address and they won't accept the Magic Promo Code.
I had a similar issue with my local franchisee last year with a different promo code from a different venue and was told to pound dirt.
At some level we are talking about something which did not cost us anything, so it is hard to complain, but I did reach out to Papa John's Corporate about it.
They did get back to me that they cannot force their franchisees to accept any promotions and as such there is nothing they could do. However, they sent me a list of franchisees who did accept that promo code (not the Magic one) and my wife I could go and get it, but for one free pizza it did not seem worth it.

u/deftechsoldout Nov 14 '24
Really nice win. Seems the team is settling in now and figuring out what works with Paolo out. If they can stick around .500, that'll be a massive win.
Also, I love that the fans are WAY more alive these days. We really kicked it up during the playoffs and it seems that's carried over. Refreshing to actually have a home court advantage.

u/katbobo Wendell Carter Jr. Nov 14 '24

People are interesting, my wife and I are new attendees this year, while I have lived in Orlando my entire life I didn't know much about basketball nor the Magic.
The folks that sit to the left of us are an older couple who said that they have been season ticket holders for 33 (or 34, I don't remember) years.
They are incredibly nice people, as I am only starting to learn about basketball (I am a big college football and Pro-Ice Hockey guy), the husband has been explaining a lot of the strategy and rules of the game.
They also have bought beers for my wife and I, welcoming us and encouraging us to continue being season tickets holders, as I said, they are very nice people.
However, Tuesday night, my wife was getting excited and was cheering on the defense when the husband of the older couple asked my wife to tone it down a little. He said, I understand being excited for the team, but could you bring it down a few decibels, they can't hear you and moreover it is hurting my ears.
Now, my wife immediately apologized because we have to sit next to them the entire season and we don't want to make enemies, plus they are really nice people. She brought it down a few decibels and everyone was happy, but it begs the question, why do 33 or 34 or however many year season tickets holders, never cheer, the most they do is golf clap?
The wife said, that they are older (they are in their middle 70s) and loud noises hurt their ears, now I can understand a Punk Rock concert or a heavy metal concert, but loudly saying defense, not so much and it is not like we are exactly young, my wife and I are both 50.
At the end of the day, we will respect their wishes because they are nice people and we have to sit next to them all season, but it might help to explain a little why the place can be quiet.

You're 100% right and this proves my point: It was a mistake to offer an extension. Cole simply is not suited for this team
8
u/Jadds1874 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
He's honestly lucky to get 5 minutes.
He wants to do more than he is capable of, which invariably leads to mistakes, turnovers and/or general poor decision making.
When we were a bad team he was exciting mainly because he plays very chaotically, but we don't need chaos anymore. Particularly on the bench, we just need guys who understand their limitations, their role and execute within that. That's why Jett gets minutes - he gets to his spots, shoots his threes (well) and works hard even as a below average defender. Cole works hard but he always does far too much and usually regresses into Cole v the opposition, completely forgetting he actually has good teammates alongside him in the second unit now.
I'm just glad Mose sees the same. If Cole has it in him, he should look at the way Jalen improved his own chaotic play into the controlled form it is now, but I just don't think he has it in him to adapt to become something that is actually a net positive for the team
1
u/Brod24 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
I disagree. We can really use some offensive chaos off of the bench.Ā
The problem is simply the shots he's taking are not going in. We really need someone to play his role but better

Suggs/KCP is the defensive backcourt of doom.

I know we need to get Jett some burn, but these prolly shouldāve been Gary minutes especially in the fourth. He just looked so lost out there at times
16
u/dwninaho Nov 14 '24
I thought he was making some good quick decisions in his time in the 4th. Found the open man twice for two big 3s, picked up Siakam who was cherry picking and fouled him before allowing him an easy bucket, making them take the ball sideout. Plus he hit his shots early in the game, even another got taken away due to Moe fouling away from the play.
Probably his best minutes of the season in a game that actually mattered.

Idk what Mose is even doing anymore when it comes to the mins for Jett, Harris, and Cole. Itās like heās just throwing them out there to see if anything sticks.
8
u/Orlando-via-stlouis Nov 14 '24
Thatās exactly what a coach is supposed to do in the first 1/4 of the season. You run different lineups out there to see what clicks . Especially when itās all hands on deck while Paolo is out

He wasnāt bad I thought. Hit two 3s right away and wasnāt a total sieve on defense. Made one of the plays of the game hitting JI in the corner off the scramble
5
u/ReedWilliams12 Fire Mosley Nov 14 '24
He wasnāt disastrous, he just kinda worried me some. I wouldāve liked to see Tristan out there during Jettās 4th qtr run, but I get why we need to get Jett ready. Heās got way more offensive creation on the perimeter by the way he can come off screens.
2
u/campy_203 Stuff The Magic Dragon Nov 14 '24
Sure, he made some mistakes, but the worst I saw were silly fouls which didn't end up in free-throws anyways. He is coverable on defense, so it wasn't all that bad this game. He was mostly solid

We've never worked like a meritocracy during the Mosley-Weltman era, so it's not about whether he's done enough.

5
u/xBerryhill Nov 14 '24
Still a product of playing bad teams (besides tonight) at home where weāre at our best. Philly on Friday could be a test depending on their health. After that the next few games will be the real test with Phoenix and the LAās coming up.
Not exactly to discredit the current squad because the defense has still been there and we continue to find ways to win. Excited to keep seeing what weāve got.

Loss streak was real, but it was also Franz coming back from illness, losing our best player so totally new lineups/rotations and playing 2 of the best teams in basketball + last years WCF team all on a long road trip.
God that road trip sucked
10
u/36Vigilantes Paolo Banchero Nov 14 '24
Goga was a huge spark last season and got buried on the bench, he woulda been huge for us in that Cavs series.
Coach has to keep him in the rotation when we are at full health. He canāt have DNPs he produces too much for that.

KAT is nasty for sure , tho with Paolo in there I do like having a center who doesnt ever ask for the rock . Wendell doesnāt really demand the ball too much more than goga so in that sense both of our centers are a good fit offensively but goga plays a grittier game

Only watched last qtr, but the offensive woes in the end were too close for comfort. Suggs final dagger saved us from trouble. Magic violating pacers really won us the game. Franz' offensive leadership was also vital. Glad we're the one who got away with the win!

That Goga interview was endearing af. I adore that guy now.

I loved when he was talking about the backcourt and said something along the lines of āTHIS IS PROBLEM FOR REST OF LEAGUEā. š

We ran a clinic on defence at the start of the 4th. Over .5 with Banchero out, more than I'd hoped. And we won a back to back :)

If you had asked me to evaluate the roster without Paolo two months ago I would have said ~fringe play-in level. Really impressed with how so many guys have stepped up in his absence. Well coached team!

Where are all the dumbass Franz haters at?
-10
u/NoInitiative4826 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
Nobody hates Franz just not everyone is afraid to criticize him when he shoots 6%, let him string together a few decent road games before yall proclaim him as the second coming itās quite insane. The short term memory loss per game is embarrassing
8
Nov 14 '24
I think your criticism was pretty dumb honestly. He had a stretch of not playing at all, coming back from a sickness and was thrust into being the leading scorer on a brutal road trip against three very strong western conference teams. No one is afraid to criticize him, I think he sucked in game 7 against the Cavs. I think judging him off that road trip was idiotic
1
u/NoInitiative4826 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
Itās not the road trip itās been his whole career. Yall can hate facts all you want that isnāt surprising this is Reddit after all, but if someone plays bad Iāll never be biased enough to not point it out. All I point out is the truth, when he plays good then I praise him when he doesnāt I criticize him. If he can be consistent this year then I wonāt have anything bad to say about his game will I? Itās pretty cut and dry actually, but the hypocrisy on this sub is crazy
1
Nov 14 '24
Heās shot like shit his whole career? Lol
1
u/NoInitiative4826 Jalen Suggs Nov 14 '24
Do yall not understand what the word inconsistent means? You act like I want him to fail I just want the team to do well and if he fails to play on the road like he does at home Iām not going to give him a pass and call for Coleās head if he misses one shot. Every time he has a good game you all talk shit but are quiet as a mouse when he shoots under 30% on the road itās truly amazing tbh
1
Nov 14 '24
You know, Iāll agree with you, heās not nearly as good on the road as he is at home. The most glaring example was the playoffs. I think the level to which youāre implying heās bad on the road is overstated. Thatās my opinion. Aside from that, if you donāt hate Franz than why reply to my comment other than feeling like youāre a hater?
There clearly are people that do

Gotta love idiots who trash our second best player 10 games into a season coming off the flu. Iāve seen one licking Franzās boots recently pretending like every single comment they made werenāt negative towards Boogie

Looked really regular out there. I was behind some pacer fans, pretty cool guys actually, but I was like why is Hali playing off ball so much. And it wasnāt even like he was running off screens

What was the TS% for Franz?
1
u/lemanruss4579 Nov 14 '24
Not great, .519. He's alternated super efficient games with pretty inefficient games recently. Was over .600, then .525, then over .600, then .519 tonight. So if that holds he'll have a super efficient next game.

Goga and black too- at least on the defensive aspect

They all get a game ball. Everyone who played tonight had a moment. Yes, even Cole and Jett

Goga is the best center for us. Its so obvious, he unlocks our offense, defense, and even allows us to play unique styles and be more risky. He raises this teams ceiling. WE need to keep him as a starter. I dont know why its taking so long to realize Wendell is not a center but Goga is a true center and he fits and excels.
3
u/ReedWilliams12 Fire Mosley Nov 14 '24
Iām almost with you. Wendell when heās healthy just has offensive highs that Goga never can.
Iām just thrilled we get to have all four of JI, Dell, Goga and Moe on our roster. Letās us have so many options

u/KenyattaLFrazier Paolo Banchero Nov 14 '24
I really think heās the most underrated player on our team. What he did on that one stretch last season where injuries thrusted him into the starting lineup was awesome, so itās good to see him keeping it up
2
u/SincereFan Mo Bamba Nov 14 '24
We were the 2nd seed, literally #2 for the hardest stretch of our season, for about half the season. More time at #2 then probably in any other spot.
We were dominating teams, strong and weak teams alike, and had the best defense. This is with AB and Goga starting. The Starting lineup while middle of the pact in rankings, had great synergy and the bench was the best in the league and the team knew their roles, and the rotations made sense.
Then Mosley decided to change everything. While I do understand not punishing players for being injured, you also need to reward and be a coach to players playing well. AB and Goga helped this team succeed that season. Only reason this team survived the 2nd half of the season (when Markelle and Wendell came back and rejoined the starting lineup) was because the previous starting lineup with Goga and AB dominated the competition and was fighting for first place with the Celtics (always like 1 game behind). Every team was healthy at that point and the Magic were still #2 in the East.
It just baffles me still, that some of us didnt notice that as soon as we made those changes the team started to slide in rankings. Of course there were also injuries but the team clearly wasnt as good anymore, they started losing games during our easiest stretch at the end of the year vs injured and struggling/tanking teams. Something unheard of with the previous lineup with Goga/AB.

Great win on a back to back with no Paolo. Fuck Ben Mathurin and the soft ass Pacers.

u/mylastphonecall Paolo Banchero Nov 14 '24
all that woofin by Mathurin at the end of the game just to lose lol they're a funny team. their fans were downvoting tf out of anyone during the offseason that wouldn't agree they were a lock for top 4 in the conference just bc they barely beat 2 injured teams in the playoffs. beautiful defense to secure the win.

u/dwninaho Nov 14 '24
They had the fakest ECF run I can remember. If they do it again, I'll gladly eat crow but I just don't see it.

You're going to be hungry mate, trust me. Absolutely zero chance they do it this year.

Yeah I feel like theyāre similar to that Hawks team that made the ECF, kinda bad long term for their development because it makes it seem like theyāre further along than they really are

Franz + defense = win
The math is simple.

u/ReedWilliams12 Fire Mosley Nov 14 '24
Franz was so good. Indy even made it kind of hard on him. Last night he was able to abuse charlotte and get really easy points. Kudos to Indy for making him work, but the result is still the same.

u/dwninaho Nov 14 '24
Magic defense at home is unreal.
The word has to be out on Haliburton. Force him to drive and do not collapse on him, he can pass out which is fine, but he isn't going to score in the paint. Make him just a passer and the Pacers are not a good team.
