Looking for a specific type of Ice Cream in the region

Let me give a bit of context, I use to live in a small secluded town in Abitibi until I moved in the region in 2008.

In that specific town there is an ice cream shop which serves a soft serve menu of “24 flavours”. They use vanilla soft serve that they mix with the flavour of your choice and run it back through a machine to give back the soft serve look.

The specific banana soft serve ice cream from the menu was my childhood, my favourite dessert and I only get to have it when I drive around 7-8 hours from here to see family members but that doesn’t happen every year. And since it is a small town, the ice cream shop is closed on rainy days so I don’t necessarily get to have it every time I’m around either.

So I’m wondering is there anywhere in Ottawa that sells a similar menu where I could get banana soft serve?

eXpresso Café officially rebranded

Just a heads-up for anyone who goes to the eXpresso café on Preston Street.

They've officially changed their name to Espresso Moment Cafe and Bakery.

According to their announcement, everything else stays the same.

Same ownership, same location, and same experience, just a new sign and name on the storefront for their coffee, bakery, and gelato.

Does anyone know where I can find Salmas crackers? They used to be available at Farm Boy and Metro, but I haven’t seen them in over a year.

National Shawarma Day Reviews

How did it go for everyone? I went to Osmow's on Innes because I happened to be there for work around 12pm today. Surprisingly there was no line. It had to have been the worst shawarma I've ever tried. Barely and chicken or toppings and the seasoning on the chicken was not good. I also didn't like how the vegetables were cut into small cubes. Not sure if it's always that bad or if it was just skimped down for the promotion.

Thank you everyone for your support, I want you to know that all your kind thoughts, words and acts are remarkable. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your friends and family.
Photo from last shop: salted caramel basque cheesecake, carrot cake with creamcheese frosting (it was requested again this week 😂), green onion & jalapeno scones

Has anyone ever done the Chef’s table experience at Gitane’s?

EDIT: Thank you for the confidence boost, everyone! I'm all booked in for our anniversary next week. I'll be sure to come back in this sub and share photos and review 🙂

For 2 people I can either do the chef’s table, $328 after tax, or regular seating, $260 after tax.

Is the nearly $70 worth it? This is for a wedding anniversary dinner, so not a regular night out. My husband and I are huge foodies and I’m a very passionate home cook. But still hesitant because $328 (which doesn’t even include tip and drinks) is steep. Doable, but steep.

However I’d for sure book it if there’s a public opinion that it’s worth it. If you’ve gone or heard about someone who did, I’d love to hear about it, good or bad.

Thank you!

Chinese Takeaway

Hello! Moved from BC last year and wondering if there’s anything in Ottawa that’s similar to Victoria’s Sampan Express. My life is CRAZY right now and just looking for a simple, comfort Chinese takeaway. Thanks!

Edit: To be more specific, looking for those places that have hot trays where you can pick and choose your items; basically like a mall Chinese food but not in a mall lol

Goldies Outpost pricing

Tried out this relatively new spot in the Glebe and can't believe their pricing - $23.75 plus tax for a takeout sandwich. Total was almost $30. I had already walked over there so just sucked it up, but I can't justify regularly spending that much on lunch.

It was good (bread especially), but the cost seems really out of touch, especially since sandwiches at other spots in the neighborhood like the Nicastro or Subito are like $10. Even at more "premium" sandwich spots in MTL or TO I don't think I've seen them charge over $20.

Sort of disappointed as I live in the area and was excited to have a new place opening nearby. Who else has been? Am I missing something?

Looking for an ice cream flavour dupe

My boyfriend loves the charcoal ube ice cream from this place in Toronto called iHalo Krunch. I’ve been trying to find an ice cream place with the same flavour in Ottawa since we’ve moved here and his birthday is coming up and would love to surprise him with some.

I know this flavour is pretty niche 😅 so I totally get it if no one knows of anywhere in Ottawa but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to try here :)

thank youuu!

Chicken Egg Rolls?

We used to have a neighbourhood Chinese place (Mojo in Findlay Creek) that had terrific chicken egg rolls. Unfortunately they closed.

We don't eat pork, but do love a good egg roll. Golden Palace used to have chicken rolls, but they were basically unseasoned chicken and had none of the usual filling veggies, etc.

Most places offer veggie SPRING rolls, but they just aren't the same. We know YugiRolls has vegan egg rolls and they're great but they have odd hours and their retailers rarely have product.

Does anyone know a Chinese take-out in town that sells chicken-based egg rolls?

Someone please help me find the best Carbonara in town so I can finally get a good night’s sleep

I got back from Rome recently and have been searching for a fix that I haven’t been able to find yet. I know the food culture and ingredients (water especially) are different here and nothing’s gonna be quite the same, but something’s gotta at least come close!

I’ve tried a bunch of carbonara’s here and even attempted to make some myself about 5-6 times, and nothing has come close to hitting the spot.

Please share your goto spots for Carbonara in town, and thanks in advance! Bonus points if someone’s nonna still runs the kitchen!

California sandwiches style with breaded veal? I miss it so much.
