Unanswered What's going on with this video where there's a car accelerating up onto an inverted surface and then using jet propulsion to land?

Here's some screenshots 1 2 3

First, is this actually real or is this an AI mockup?

Second, why on Earth would somebody think that this was something that you would ever actually use? Not many freeways being built like Hot Wheels sets in America.

Edit: damn, this is heavily down voted what's the deal

Answer: It's Elon Musk's latest attempt at "innovation" by showcasing a car that can "fly" for a limited amount of time.

The inverted surface is a part of the exaggerated performance.

The reality is that this invention does not in any way meet road safety requirements and is another attempt to cash in on selling something that does unnecessary shit that nobody asked for.

Yeah, just saw a news article about this. A driver onboard would add too much weight, rendering it useless..

Who would even want a car that can flip? Any item (like a phone) you have in the car immediately becomes a flying, small hazard which could smash into your face or a window

It’s pretty much a magic trick, with the car infront of a jet black background to hide shenanigans.

So if:

  • I'm driving fast
  • on a mountain road
  • hit a patch of ice
  • drive through the guardrail
  • fly over a surface that doesn't have any trees and is pretty flat

This might save my life.

Ohhhhkay then.

Salesman: "The good news is that this car is a one of a kind and it only has one previous owner! James Bond!!!"

For you, only $3 million! Is bargain!

Remember that jet pack from like the 70s? It had like 30 seconds of fuel. The comment I heard is that as soon as you take off you need to find a place to land. This thing has probably 5 seconds of flight time.

MKBHD did a video talking about this car. Basically for any of these maneuvers in the video you have to recharge the onboard nitrogen tank and there's really no explanation of how you would do that at home if you had this car.

This is basically showing off that their engineers can do something. It's meaningless for even people who have enough money to buy the car. Because it's never going to be sold for home use, bet on it.

I still don't get why people are so angry about this post. And my comment about running off a mountain road. I was actually genuinely out of the loop on this because I don't follow Tesla in any way. The less Elon Musk in day-to-day life the better.

In the other videos they said it charged itself. I worked at Parker Hannifin years ago at one of their labs and we had a pressure intensifier where we could charge up a high pressure tank to 1,000 psi. Took many hours. This is going up to 10,000 psi.

Answer: it’s real. This is from the reveal of the new Tesla Roadster. It’s making use of the technology from rockets — in this case they’re using what look like RCS thrusters from SpaceX transports. These are used on dragon capsules to maneuver and on the boosters to orient themselves for landing on drone ships or back on the launch sites. Though these will use different propellant than the space-faring thrusters.

Opinion is that this part of it is pure show and will never see a road legally. The last roadster was shown off in a similar fashion and then never seen again. As a road car without all the utter silliness? Maybe. You got the stock “two years away” answer from Musk, so from his track record you’re looking at at least five years, if at all.

The RCS thrusters use hypergolics. The booster and this thing used cold gas thrusters which is nitrogen in a composite overwrapped tank pressurized to 10,000 psi.
