Opinión | Desahogo Advice on living in peru

Hello Wonderful people of Peru, I'm a doctor of Veterinary medicine in Pakistan and I have recently been offered to work at a Peruvian wildlife center. I've never been to Peru or south America. Can you please let me know what I should expect going there, what is the cost of comfortably living there etc. i have been offered 2500 soles per month which is the salary for the assistant role and I will slowly climb up the ranks with time and experience. Looking forward to your response.

If you are ok with living in Pakistan, you wont have any problems living in Perú. Just start learning the language a bit.

That’s a really low salary for a doctor

Yes that is true but unfortunately my country pays even lower and due to my nationality I get very limited offers internationally, life is hard.

Its not a low salary, you're earning around 2.5x minimum wage + the vet career is hard to find a job in. If you're living in province (like outside Iquitos in this case) 2500 is more than enough. Renting a room or apartment + food and necessities shouldn't go over 1500 (if you rent a single room you can probably stick to 1000) so you have 1000 to save up or spend. Province life is mostly calm

Appreciate the valuable insight. I've always dreamed of working in the Amazon that is also why I'm really tempted. Not used to the weather there but I'm determined to adapt. I'm not a big spender anyways, I don't drink I don't party, so the way you describe it, it shouldn't be bad at all

Based on this I’d say go for it. Just be sure the offer is legit and that you have some kind of long-term goals for your career.

I think it is an amazing opportunity and I hope you grow as a professional. Your salary could be higher but you'll be ok with it. The value is in the nature actually. Life is cheaper there because they don't pay taxes. Maybe you'll get to see other countries around here.

Thank you for your kind words, getting to work in a place like this has been a dream and getting a chance to help the amazing animals there is a big honour. Yes money matters but I'm still quite young and as I gain experience hopefully I will get better paying opportunities. I'm so thankful to get a chance to do what I love, I can't wait to acquaint myself with the nature I've only seen on screens as well as the wonderful people there.

Go if you like the adventure and wildlife. Don't expect this to be Manhattan or Europe.

Ofc not; I live in Pakistan, never been to a developed country. I've Worked closely with wild animals that can kill you. I understand the situation.

Yeah, I mean, you're gonna be in the middle of nowhere. It would only be a good idea if you actually like the jungle, if you don't you're gonna have a bad time. I lived in Iquitos for 2 years, you can bath at the Amazon river and eat very peculiar fruits and animals. Enjoy!

That sounds amazing! Thanks. Do they have good internet there? I don't mind the jungle but I will need good internet 😂

Yes for a single person it would be enough.

In which city of Peru would that be?

Padre cocha, just outside of Iquitos

That's more like a little village than a city. Good side is it will be cheaper. Try saving a lot, then when your contract is over, you might me able to stablish yourself in Iquitos

2500 for Iquitos is likely enough, plus you'll visit literal heaven on Earth: the Amazon forest.

Peru and Pakistan are kinda similar in some areas haha. They actually call it Perukistan

2

u/umer_411 1d ago

Yeah I saw that online but I don't quite understand it 😂😂😂

It’s a joke really haha. It’s just that some parts of Peru are very poor and underdeveloped so Peruvians themselves and random people on the internet like to joke and make fun and say it looks like the Middle East. The reality is that Peru has amazing and fun cities and one of the world’s best gastronomies and deep, rich culture. There’s poverty as there is in any LATAM country but if you have some money, you live a great life there. I live about 2/3 months a year in Lima and I have the time of my life.

That's amazing, I can't wait to explore this beautiful country. Also I would like to add that even though Pakistan is thought of as a war torn dirty place, we have some of the most stunning mountains and landscapes on the planet. I would really appreciate if you took some time to look into it.

Yea I’m actually middle eastern myself. I’m well aware of Pakistan’s beauty and food. Also, while I haven’t been there, I’ve researched enough and also traveled enough (been to 29 countries) to know that like any country, there’s good and bad areas. I actually have a Pakistani neighbor whose family lives in Karachi. I have been planning a Pakistan and Afghanistan trip for the last year but I still haven’t gone. 2027 will certainly be the year i do it. Very excited to finally see it!
