Insight A World Always Performing and an Audience That Never Leaves
The camera may be humanity’s greatest technological instrument of deception, not because the camera itself lies, but because it allows us to perform a version of ourselves for the world to see.
In a world where cameras are everywhere, and nearly every moment can be captured, shared, and consumed, there is seemingly always someone performing and someone watching. We have created a world in which the performance is constant and the audience never leaves.
And perhaps most unsettling is how readily we accept these performances as reality. We watch other people’s lives unfold through screens, rarely questioning how much of what we’re witnessing is genuine and how much has been carefully constructed for an audience.
But if everyone is performing and everyone is watching, how do we distinguish reality from performance?

I agree; that’s why I uninstalled Instagram years ago and have never even had TikTok. I only use WhatsApp, YouTube, and Reddit—though I have to admit that even on these seemingly more authentic platforms, there’s a constant, barely concealed performance going on among human beings. Sometimes I feel the urge to live completely without technology, but I’m not strong enough—or indifferent enough—to do so. I must confess, though, that I wish I had lived before the age of social media, back when the "performance" only took place in person, rather than through these cursed screens.
