Announcement New rules regarding business and software development discussions

First up, business discussions.

We've heard you. There's too much business talk here. This isn't a small business subreddit, it's meant to discuss the culture of photography, and the constant "how do I start making money" or "my photographer ghosted me" has diluted that discussion.

So, to find some sort of middle ground, we've created a weekly business thread where those sorts of questions can be asked and answered. Each Wednesday, a new recurring thread called "Business Wednesday" will go live. We will be diverting any posts to there. If you see any on the front page, please feel free to report them so we can help guide the OP to the appropriate place.

And now, the software dev posts.

We have never allowed promotional posts on this sub. It's not what it's for, and we take a strict stance on it. We did, however, allow people to share their photography-related dev projects in the Self-Promotion Sunday thread.

Well, that's no more. That thread was meant to be a place where photographers could share things like photos they're proud of, galleries they've participated in, new publications, really just things us photographers get excited by and are proud of. Unfortunately, that thread has become completely overrun with devs promoting their products. I think we can all agree that we're sick of seeing vibecoded "the ultimate culling tool" and "the Adobe killer". It's exhausting. It's not what Reddit is for. It's certainly not what this sub is for.

So from now on any form of advertising or self-promotion outside of showcasing photos or projects in the appropriate thread is prohibited. Any web-development projects or apps are prohibited as they do not relate to the practice of photography.

We have also canceled the Self Promotion Sunday thread and instead are instituting Success Sunday, a space for photographers to share their photography successes.

If you see any software promotion of any kind anywhere on this sub, please report it.

tl;dr:

We have new community days, accompanying our existing ones:

  • Business Wednesday: Ask your business-related questions
  • Follow Friday: Share your socials
  • Salty Saturday: Get all your rants out
  • Success Sunday: Share your photography successes

Absolutely no software promotion allowed. Anywhere. Zero tolerance here on out.

kthnxbye!

Art Is there an app for digital photozines and photobooks?

Hey everyone...I'd like to turn my photos into shareable photozines and photobooks with custom layouts consisting of photos and text.

Are there any apps that do that? I've seen a canva app and some business-oriented ones that produce sales collateral but nothing that quite fits what I'd like. Browser-based ideally but phone is okay too. Thanks!

Gear Recommendations on Where to Sell Expensive Camera?

Hi everyone,

Any recommendations on where to sell an expensive camera?

I have a limited edition camera that, per google, is worth 4+ grand.

1.Trade-in sites like KEH, for example, quoted me for around $2k less than what it is worth.

  1. Ebay takes a 13.6% fee, amounting to several hundreds of dollars.

  2. FredMiranda seemed like a good alternative, but new users are seen as less trustworthy, and I have not sold any cameras before.

  3. I don't have enough karma for r/photomarket 😭

If this were a cheaper camera, I would not worry about the loss from 1. and 2. too much, but given that the difference may very well exceed $1000 based on the platform, I would like to know how I can best navigate this. Thanks!

Art Suggest a goal for a yearly photo walkabout.

Once a year I visit my friend in Seattle.

We do a photo walkabout, but the photos are rubbish: us hanging out in bars, the ferry, that waterfall that's famous, the cafe from Twin Peaks (What a TRIP getting coffee there)...

It's a blast, but the photos we make feel pointless other than us marking time.

Any ideas how we could make this annual meetup and walkabout closer to art? Have meaning? Become a collaborative jam session with direction?

Not that it matters, but...

Gear Photography classes/degree?

Hello! Looking for some advice long time lurker first time poster .… I am a mom of two and have been doing sports photography for my kids teams. I have fallen in love with the subject matter and want to improve my skills and my gear but don’t wanna continue to throw money away only to regret my purchase. I feel like undergrad community college ain’t it… I took a few in my 20s- a film/Darkroom and one photoshop intro. does anyone have any real experience on how to start over late in life and really call myself a professional I have been shooting like crazy and I know that’s the best way to learn, but if I’m going to make a go at this, I really wanna be able to offer my clients professional service not just another hack job. There are so many cookie cutter photographers, boudoir, photographers, etc. that’s not what I’m interested in. But I would like to improve my technique so I can continue to capture these moments of my kids. Also, I am considering expanding my current services. I do real estate photography and I have a Canon R 50 and a few cheap lenses. I’ve been limping by with. I think I want toshoot sports photography and portraits more. I would love any kind advice.

Business Leaving Adobe

Looking to end my time with Adobe for many reasons, tried to cancel today but they tell me I would need to pay them £100ish in order to cancel the subscription. anyone else found this issue and, if so, what did you do to get past it, other than paying the money?

Technique Family negatives, about 100 years old.

I have a few negatives of family photos that might be around 100 years old. They measure 4"x5" (3) and one measures 3.5" x 4"

Does anyone know anyone in/around/near NYC that has the skills and equipment to turn these into prints, or at least good quality digital images?

I'm sure I could send these off to some processor somewhere, but given their age and family history, I'd rather not take the risk of losing them in the process.

EDIT: Several people mentioned LTI Lightside, so that's where I went. Dropped them off a few hours ago. Thanks, reddit.

Technique Can I use Photographic Paper if I don’t own a film camera or have any experience?

I found a full box of photographic paper in a dumpster outside a house in my neighborhood, I believe they were clearing out from a previous tenant. Is there anything I can do with it without having to buy anything else? I’m thinking like a pinhole camera but I’d have no idea where to start.

I have 100 sheets of 8x10 inch glossy photographic paper, when I open the box the sheets are in a black opaque bag that I’m afraid to open. But I really didn’t want them to end up in a landfill if they were somehow useful. They are Ilford brand ā€œMGIV Multigrade IV RC Deluxeā€ if that means anything. The price sticker says they sold for $90 so I really don’t want that going to waste.

Thanks for any help or guidance, and forgive any apparent ignorance, I have no idea what I’m talking about :)

Business Surprisingly bad service from Printique

I used to use Printique for a long time to get prints but moved away when I setup a website with built in ordering. I just had a customer reorder 3 dozen cards they had me print for them a few years ago and I had printed with printique. I just went back to printique and hit the reorder button.

Well a week later I got a box... with 1 dozen cards in it. I called them up and after a long call and a while on hold they agreed to send me the 2 missing dozen and expidite them now that things were getting delayed.

Another week later I got another box from them... with 1 dozen cards in them. Called back and they kept putting me on hold. I had to repeat, yes all I got was 1 more dozen and they would put me on hold again, and again and again. They finally agreed to send the last dozen to me and when I said again that this is ridiculous they just said... This is the last one so you're good now.

It seems like their service really went down hill while I was gone, and moving away from them was a good idea.

Gear How are you backing up your photos in this economy?

Title is mostly sarcasm, but went to purchase another 2TB SSD and the prices have more than doubled. Thanks a lot, AI.

What's the move? I don't love the dropbox subscription model that I will have to pay until I die.

Technique Event Organizer: How to prepare my race's night time finish line for photography?

Hi, I read through this post (/u/dollyd2):

https://www.reddit.com/r/photography/comments/1ljdqqz/my_experience_shooting_a_running_event_at_night/

and I have questions from an organizer's POV.

If I am trying to set up my finish line so the photographer will be able to capture the runners AND the arch they are running through, what lighting sources should I consider?

My (naive) thoughts:

A tripod mounted LED on either side of the Finish Arch, maybe 10' away to illuminate the arch and the runner when directly under it.

Similar lights mounted on the runner-side of the arch for when they are still over there and not creating shadows from the arch from the previously mentioned lights.

String lights going 20'~ along the runner chute into the arch.

Any advice? We have small races so if you're imagining a giant marathon setup, that's not us.
Thanks!

Gear Basic photo album management and facial recognition

Hi,

I’m a long time user of Google Picasa. It is fast, basic album generation and facial recognition work well. But it doesn’t support new formats.

I’ve tried
Digikam, found it to be painfully slow even with the database on an ssd. User interface and setup was kinda of a pain.

Tonfoto. Speed is ok but gives really strange false positives in facial recognition.

I’m not adverse to buying a program for this, what works well?

I’m on a pc, about 3tb of photos. Photos are on HDD, didn’t buy a ssd when things were cheap. Have a large ssd where the database could reside.

Art Starting documentary project - how to approach subject

Hi,

I'd like to start taking photography more seriously. I'm interested in photographing people, and I have a few ideas for long-term photography projects. However, whenever I email someone to explain an idea, I never seem to get a response.

I've tried reaching out to individuals and local institutions. I'm not asking for funding; I even make it clear that I'm willing to cover all the expenses myself. I'm simply trying to make contact and get a conversation started, but I still don't receive any replies.

A couple of hours ago, I came across a project in which a photographer took portraits of people getting out of a swimming pool. It made me wonder how projects like this actually come together. How do you get permission to enter a swimming pool with a camera? Do you approach people as they get out of the water and ask, ā€œHey, can I take your photo?ā€ Or is there a different process for arranging this kind of shoot?

Art If we understand Photography to be a language…

If we understand Photography to be a language for describing or visually communicating an emotive and/or intellectual message

Composition - the arrangement of shapes relative to each other inside the frame - is its grammar; color, (including the rendering of color into a gray scale in black and white photography) is its vocabulary; and acuity (focus /sharpness 8or the lack thereof) is its punctuation

Art Combining video into a single picture?

Hey Y'all. I'm an experimental musician with an idea for a cover photo. Recently I've been dealing with various physical and mental health stresses due to my working schedule (damn swing shift), so my own body has kinda been my enemy lately. In order to portray this, I was thinking of recording myself standing in front of a blank wall, with slight variations in my position. Then I wanted to combine every frame into one singular image, to make my body look very distorted. I dont know much about photography or editing so any advice would be extremely helpful!

Technique How do you manage fatigue on long outdoor photography days?

I used to shoot mostly indoors, but I’ve been getting into outdoor photography lately and now I’m hooked. The only thing is, I seem to get worn out before I’m ready to call it a day. I’ll stop for a shot and then spend a while moving around because I think there might be a better angle, sometimes heading up a hill just to have a look. I don’t really notice how much walking I’m doing until a few hours in, when my legs and lower back start feeling it. Carrying all my gear probably doesn’t help either. By then I’m passing up spots I’d otherwise want to check out because I don’t feel like making the detour, and the walk back feels a lot longer. Maybe I just haven’t gotten used to it yet?

Has anyone else had a similar experience? What helped you get past it? Would appreciate any tips.

Business Sony and Capture One are having conflicts?

I saw a post about the conflict between Sony and Capture One because of Capture One Express version for Sony and maybe that's the reason why Sony is NOT supporting their Compressed RAW formats to Capture One since A7V. I have no clues but

Tho Loseless compressed RAW is supported but Compressed RAW and Compressed HQ RAW are Sony's new proprietary format which requires Sony's support but since they are refusing that, Capture One can not support compressed RAW on their software. Reverse Engineering will not work due to the technical difficulties and legal issues.

Most importantly, there was a lawsuit between Sony users and Sony + Capture One from last year before A7V released. The case number is 3:25-cv-02305-WQH-SBC, Rodriguez v. Sony Electronics Inc***.*** Interestingly, they blamed each other in order to avoid legal responsibilities. Tho the case is closed, I dont think their relationship is as same as before.

Since then, A7V and A7R6 STILL didnt get support Compressed RAW on Capture One while RX10 V doesnt even support Capture One itself!!! It's almost one year since a new Compressed RAW came out so this is a serious problem after all. Capture One already answered this from their own forum that it has nothing to do with Compressed RAW support but to my eyes, they do especially since RX10 V doesn't even support Capture One even if it has uncompressed and loseless compressed options. It could be a serious problem for all future Sony cameras as long as Sony doesn't want their cameras supported on Capture One.

At this point, all Sony users are forced to use loseless compressed RAW on Capture One or use Adobe cause so far, they are the only one supporting Sony's new Compressed RAW formats. Since there are and were conflicts between Sony and Capture One, maybe that's the main reason why Sony is still refusing to support their Compressed RAW on Capture One? Because otherwise, it does NOT make any senses as no Sony's new Compressed RAW ever supported on Capture One for almost one year already. Maybe someone need to stand up and spread the world to resolve their conflicts.

Do you think Sony will stop supporting Capture One?

Post Processing Storage situation advice re physical/cloud storage solutions

Hi all, I've done a lot of research and am still unsure about what direction to take for my data backup system and was wondering if you had any word of wisdom based on your diverse experiences.

I'm a beginner amateur photographer. I've been accumulating a many more photos over the last year since practicing more frequently and consistently. At the moment I'm actually trying to consolidate all my photos from over the years (from phones, previous cameras) and securely back them up with a 3-2-1 system.

After gathering all my photos I've reached over 1T. It's going to grow faster as I'm getting more into photography, though I don't plan on becoming that serious.

I don't own an SSD yet, but I really think I need at least one. But oh my it is expensive. Currently, all my photos are in:

  1. Two HDDs (1T + an older 300GB one), one from which I edit, but need to switch to SSD.

    1. Lightroom Cloud : I have a subscription to Adobe Creative through my work that I'm using as a back up for now but need to find a personal cloud solution.

I also have access to a Google Workspace Business Standard subscription (this is my own personal one), and an Amazon Prime subscription, which I could use for storage.

Ive also looked into NAS, Blackblaze as physical/ cloud options, but it's a bit overwhelming and I don't know if it's worth the investment for my situation.

Considering that I only have 1T at this stage and don't see myself becoming that serious with photography, would it be a good option to get one SSD + one other HDD, and back up everything to my Amazon and/or Google Workspace? Or should I be future proof and get a NAS and other more secured cloud solutions?

Technique Tips: Haunted House

I was recently asked to do photography for a haunted house (free work, all volunteer run for a good cause, I'm friends with a few of the long term volunteers. Happy to do what I can and expand my skills). It is a nice haunted house, plus some outdoor entertainment, haystack rides, etc. Everything is done after dark, and inside has varied lighting but dim. I will be shooting while it is going on. My other photography has always been outdoor sport photography during the day, so I'm really worried about lighting. If I use flash, I think i will mess up thr ambiance for the visitors and blind the actors. Any ideas/tips?

I'm also a huge chicken of haunted houses myself so I'm worried about accidently getting scared myself, but i dont know if anyone can help with that šŸ˜… I'm hoping focusing on the pictures will be enough of a distraction. I have volunteered as an actor at a haunted house before, but its not scary when you are the one jumping out at people.
