News AnyPS5 has implemented 90% of known library functions

Via https://github.com/boykopovar/AnyPS5

Alongside this, 5 games are now at the "Playable" stage which means that it's "playable from start to finish with minor issues." (from https://alxcbtw.github.io/anyps5-roadmap/ )

* System libraries: percentage of the functions known to the project so far, not of every PS5 system function. The total grows as more functions are declared.

Excited for what the future holds, I'm hopeful.

How do you discover new library functions? By going through the code of every ps game you can find?

7

u/BuyHistorical5789 47m ago

and how do they know what library function needs to do?

6

u/LAXBASED 33m ago

AI does the heavy lifting. It’s just meta data and whatever game engine applied to decompress and recompile to a larger scope of string data that manages to build into the library functions much simplier (least that’s the shorter version of things) all PlayStation games are composed of .Bin files and with the right tools to decompress and recompile you can turn that Eboot.bin into a executable. That’s where stuff like those custom ps2 games in Brazil came at play very early on in the scene days.

I guess that problem is why they only have 90% coverage.

man, I love hate driven development

Spite is a strong motivator

u/Av_Inash 3h ago

ELI5 what this means. Does this mean that once it reaches 100%, you can throw any PS5 game at it, and it will just run the game?

246

u/dauntlessMast 3h ago

Yes, but as stated the libraries % refers to those known currently, if more are discovered then that will decrease in terms of completion.
Currently 3765 but tomorrow it maybe 4000, so on and so forth.

85

u/mr_christer 3h ago

So 10% of library functions discovered are not yet implemented

u/Due_Bathroom5296 2h ago

Where did you get 10% from ? Are you the library ? 😲

Now I understand that 1/3 of adult Americans have zero reading skill/literacy level.

16

u/Av_Inash 3h ago

Understood

2

u/Iconoclasm89 24m ago

Is there an estimate for the total number of libraries? They are at 3765, could the total be 10,000? I assume not since some games are playable but idk, asking out of ignorance

1

u/dauntlessMast 4m ago

It is unknown, it is a trial and error sort of labor.
If all games work perfectly, then it indicates that all system libraries have been captured in the software. So it could be 10k, more, or less nobody knows.

It's to reverse engineer any ps5 executables (including games) and compile them for Linux and Windows.

64

u/Av_Inash 3h ago edited 3h ago

So basically, if it reaches 100%, I can take a PS5 executable and reverse engineer it to run it natively on Windows and other systems?

51

u/baz8771 3h ago

In theory yes

20

u/Av_Inash 3h ago

Understood. Thanks for the help.

1

u/this_theater_is_lit 2m ago

with modern ai handling the grunt work it's pretty certain to happen sooner rather than later.

oh i did not see the boon for piracy coming! 🏴‍☠️

fuck yes i would download a car if i could!

32

u/P1ssBobSh1tPants69 2h ago

Kind of. It does two things. 1: recompile the game so that it can run on your pc. 2: runtime translation to trick the game into thinking it's running on a ps5 and not on your pc.

15

u/Av_Inash 2h ago

Okay. Thanks for explaining it to me in simple terms.

23

u/Usual-Rock-32 1h ago

Think of it like owning 100% of an English dictionary. You technically know every single word that exists, but that doesn't mean you can instantly write a Pulitzer-winning novel without having a mental breakdown.

Games still need GPU translation, memory timing, and custom engine patches so they don't immediately crash your rig into a blue screen.

2

u/DRAC0R3D 33m ago

I love your explanation so much, damn. What a good way to put it.

1

u/Ripdog 41m ago

If the green items were all perfectly implemented, and the chart perfectly represents all possibilities, then yes. But neither are true - just because a function has an implementation doesn't mean it actually works like the ps5 original, and there are no doubt more to discover. Still months to go until AAA games get in-game, and then you need to deal with performance.

That said, progress is crazy fast.

u/puts_on_rddt 43m ago

It basically means instead of PC players waiting until February and then ~May for a cracked version of GTA6, we'll be playing about four days after the release. So mark your calendars, November 23rd ish.

15

u/MainFunctions 2h ago

What caused the sudden explosion late September? I want to say AI-assisted reverse engineering but wouldn’t we have seen that years ago?

14

u/Snoo_6076 2h ago

opus 5-5 allows to the i.a agent use another programs like a mod maker or a program that are use to make reverse engineering

23

u/DragoniteChamp Pastafarian 2h ago

AI has gotten to the point that it's RAPIDLY helped with reverse engineering. I imagine it's half in part of it learning general game architecture more, such as from X game in X mods or all of the decomps now, on top of monotonous tasks like decomps being really easy for AI. That and Sony more recently being little bitchboys about digital only and the lack of ownership really pushed for people to work on PS emus/decomps.

I'm not the biggest fan of it tbh, I'd much rather my homegrown fully man-made emulation/decomps

4

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

As far as I know public AI has lately reached a point where it can decompile stuff, which is very hard to do for humans. I’m talking past 2 months, it couldn’t code as well as it does now a few months back. Don’t quote me on that though

1

u/Blue-Thunder 7m ago

Sony going the "no physical media route" along with "gamers don't actually own the games they buy" and gamers going "yeah fuck that shit assholes".

24

u/SmegmaSlurper1996 2h ago

this is amazing! the only problem is my PC can't probably run PS5

29

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

What are your specs? PS5 specs are comparable to a 2070 super / 5700xt GPU and a 3700x / i5-12400F CPU

19

u/SmegmaSlurper1996 2h ago

wow, I thought it'll need like 5070 above GPU, my spec is 3600/9060XT/16GB

32

u/CSS_FR ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 2h ago

with regular emulators like kyty or sharpemu you would need insane batshit specs, but AnyPS5 is moreso a compatibility layer to convert dumped games to exe to play, like what wine/proton does on linux but a bit different

12

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

Yeah thats way above. PS5 emulation is optimising insanely fast (check it out on YouTube), so comparable hardware should hopefully work at like 90-80% of PS5 power at some point

2

u/Crylysis 2h ago

So hypothetically if all goes well and we get GTA6 on PC. A 3060 with I7-10700 and 32 GB could run it?

8

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

Yep. Hypothetically, if this project is finished any PC that’s like, 5-10% faster than a PS5, will be able to run PS5 games at the same settings. Although I think the CPU matters more than the GPU. GTA6 is a big driving force behind the progress I presume

2

u/Based_Beauty 2h ago

It all depends on if there will be a hypervisor jailbreak found in time after GTA 6 lands. Its not looking promising right now unfortunately

1

u/Different_Hunt3613 2h ago

maybe lacking in cpu because emulation is cpu heavy

3

u/assbutt-cheek 1h ago

this isnt emulation

2

u/Xeniox 2h ago

If that’s the case how are they able to crank out so much fidelity? Is it just because it’s not running as demanding of an OS underneath it or? That seems wildly less powerful than I would have guessed.

5

u/Ozone--King 2h ago

There’s a really interesting technical breakdown on the PS5 by Mark Cerny that kind of explains why. Essentially the hardware architecture down to the PCIe lanes on the PS5 are highly optimised for gaming and work very cleverly with the PS5 OS to utilise this bespoke hardware. A lot of people compare the raw processing power of consoles to PCs but forget that consoles are so much more optimised for gaming than PCs are from a hardware and software perspective.

I think the PS5 software breakdown to PC is interesting but I have my doubts that you’ll be able to efficiently run games through it unless your PC hardware is really good. Essentially in comparison to PS5 hardware a PC is likely going to be brute force running PS5 games this way because without that underlying PS5 hardware architecture, this software on a PC will be heavily unoptimised to run on PC hardware architectures in comparison to a PS5. That’s my understanding anyway.

2

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

Game developers optimize for the PS5, I think that’s the biggest factor. Although I’m not entirely sure

2

u/Xeniox 2h ago

That’s incredibly impressive. So if that’s the case, would I theoretically be able to play ps5 games on my ally? And also if that’s the case why the hell isn’t there a damn PlayStation 5 portable!

1

u/Bruno091004 1h ago

Not sure what the ally specs are but yeah, it should run anywhere. And your second question, sony hates money they told me

1

u/Xeniox 1h ago

That’s incredible. Thank you for the info!

Also haha 💀

1

u/Xeniox 1h ago

Could this same technology be used to make other consoles “run via a translation layer” as well? Like say Xbox/360 games that never got a modern port or backwards compatibility?

1

u/Used-Lake-8148 54m ago

The games are optimized for those specific components and they also have a proprietary AI upscaling software PSSR like DLSS

1

u/deadguy9965 30m ago

I have a question
Lets say there is a game is on pc and on ps5
But the pc req is much higher that you cant technically
Play it on pc
But as you said ps5 is about 2070 super
Will it be able to run using this ?
I am really intrigued to know the answer

1

u/b0sanac 8m ago

It technically should, since the console versions are heavily tuned and optimisedfor the console hardware in order to perform as well as it can and justify those claims that "ps5 can run this at 4k 60fps" or whatever it is.

1

u/deadguy9965 6m ago

But i have God of war 3 rematerd fro fitgirl
And my pc is 3060 ryzen 5 5600h
But i get some random frame drops and like the bulidings are glitching and colors changes

-2

u/Arcranium_ 1h ago

I own both a 2070 Super and a PS5 and I wouldn't say the performance is especially comparable. My PS5 definitely performs noticeably better, especially considering that it outputs at 4K and handles ray-tracing well while I output my 2070 Super to a 1440p monitor, usually having to forego ray-tracing entirely to get over 60FPS, many times even with DLSS. I have copies of multiple games on both PS5 and PC and they almost always run better on my PS5. I'd say a 3070 or a 2080 would be more comparable.

2

u/North_Beginning_7860 58m ago

lol, You don't about upscaling in PS5? it has a mid level hardware which uses optimization for output of Upscaled 4K (that too in most games is limited to 60 fps)

1

u/Arcranium_ 38m ago

Oh I'm aware, I am getting these results while upscaling as well

2

u/GAMING_SERVER_ADMIN 2h ago

It's not really emulation anymore like native style or I guess with translation layer like proton sort of method? Someone can prob explain it better, but the old ways of emulation is becoming a thing in the past it seems thanks to AI.

14

u/SmolGyro 2h ago

Sorry, I'm kinda new here to AnyPS5. Where does one check for updates for AnyPS5? Is it from a website or something?

12

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

On their github ( https://github.com/boykopovar/AnyPS5 ) they post progress, alongside a tracker for games and how well they run ( https://alxcbtw.github.io/anyps5-roadmap/ )

5

u/rowmean77 2h ago

Is it time to christen r/AnyPS5?

2

u/Bruno091004 2h ago

Huh didn’t know that already existed. Nice

6

u/bendmunk95 2h ago

There's links in the post

3

As a software engineer, the first 90% is the easy part

2

u/me00lmeals 20m ago

Some might even say 92 is half of 99

3

u/imheretocomment69 1h ago

I'm not sure if I'm asking the right question, how can a regular folk like me use it to play game? Or can we use it to play game already?

2

u/ipechman 50m ago

What are the chances of getting gta vi to run on it?

1

u/DRAC0R3D 30m ago

I'm curious about that too

1

u/jacksp666 17m ago

We would need files first

1

u/Historical_Sample740 6m ago

A new PS5 firmware will be released for GTA 6 that won't be hacked, meaning the game won't be dumped. But there's a rumor that hackers are keeping some vulnerabilities secret now, to reveal them after GTA 6 is released for the latest firmware. I don't know whether to believe it or not.

4

u/Hushang999 1h ago

The main PS5 game I’d love to play this way is Astro bot (my son wants to play it) and I don’t want to drop the $ on the console for it.

Have a 7900 xtx with 32gb of ram, I assume that’s enough power to run it?

4

u/pepenomics 1h ago

Yeah it runs fine on kyty I think the whole game was playable

1

u/South-Tip-4019 27m ago

I am … kind of surprised Sony hasn’t had it pulled down already (regardless of whether its legal or not)

1

u/jacksp666 15m ago

There's no proprietary code so no copyright infringement.

1

u/South-Tip-4019 12m ago

Sure, but you can be sued even if you are right and most open source project  dont have money to fight litigation from Sony.

1

u/b0sanac 11m ago

If they do you can be assured that three more will pop up overnight.

Plus making an emulator is technically not illegal, the issue comes with using said emulator to run pirated content.

Sony has been through that battle twice in the early 2000s, and they lost both court cases which set the precedent that reverse-engineering stuff like the console bios to achieve software compatibility falls under fair use, and that video game emulators are legal as long as the devs write their own code and do not distribute bios files or pirated game roms.

1

u/CarpenterFinal6471 25m ago

how does it work

u/CandyLoxxx 54m ago

This is gonna be so groundbreaking

i thought this sub's policy was to not pirate silksong?

52

u/majinwh0o 3h ago

Pirates don’t have policies just morals. If you can afford it buy it if not then don’t. Help when you are able to. - coming from a life long pirate

4

u/Freya0232 2h ago

Yep, i am currently playing Castlevania - Belmont's curse (pirated since i have no income atm), but once i'm able, i'm going to purchase it even if i don't play it again anytime soon

10

u/obetu5432 2h ago

the code is more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules
