Question/discussion It infuriates me how Trump supporters think he’s brilliant when he’s a pure idiot. My only question is why?

I’m 28M and to be honest, every time I hear a Trump supporter, tell me why they like him. They say something, so pathetic like oh he just says what he thinks he’s not a regular politician he just says it’s simple, plain, honest and direct. Which that’s the thing that I hate the most about him. Other than the fact that he’s a fascist and a wannabe dictator. He says things like he never ever read a book in his whole life. He talks like somebody who is totally illiterate and he’s proud of it he doesn’t care. He has the mental understanding of a 12 year old. Just a couple days ago I was with a friend and he said this about Trump. He said, don’t listen to what he says focus on his actions, he then said, “if you ever see him in private, he’s a very focused person, and when he has an idea, he sets out to do it” and then he said he’s a visionary. I cannot listen to these people anymore. Trump has said he made a request about nuking a hurricane he said we should inject bleach into our arms. He said, “why should I read a briefing book? That’s 300 pages I’m really good at remembering things just put it onto a page. It’s easy to understand.” Like if Barack Obama said that or Bill Clinton or Joe Biden people will be calling for the 25th amendment. But with Trump, he gets the double standard. He’s the type of moron that is so dumb that even some of the dumbest people I’ve met in my life he makes them sound, smart. He never grows on anything, regardless of the circumstance. Normal people are able to grow with their job. The more responsibility they get he never has. He doesn’t want to and he’s proud of it. He has no ability to be embarrassed store feel a sense of humility, like he screwed something up.

Me no like how country is. Me see guy who completely different from every politician ever saying he’s gonna change everything. Me think why not, no one else is doing it. - populism for beginners

u/IrreversibleBinomial May 24 '26

Me hear guy who blame other people for my problems — foreigners, media, elites, zuckerbucks, democrats, gays, trans, comedians, journalists, shithole countries, but obviously he likes me so he’s like me, me say this guy is honest, great man

I think Mudde’s work on populism describes it as a “thin centered ideology” in which self proclaimed strongmen promise to “slice through the knot of bureaucracy with claimed simple solutions.”

Apologies if I’m not getting the quote right, I’m out right now and I’m relying off of memory. But once you get this definition of populism into your head you start to see it everywhere.

Look up the work of Bob Altemeyer on right wing Authoritarianism.

https://www.drjkoch.org/Intro/Spring%2020/New%20files/Anger%20Games.pdf

Generalized prejudice and RWA are the strongest predictors of support for trump. These are people who sincerely believe in their double standards. Existentially, they consider themselves good and their opponents bad. Thus, no matter what Obama does empirically, it is bad, and no matter what Trump does, it is good. This is why they are unfazed when you point out their hypocrisy. From their view, of course their are different standards for good people versus bad people.

They love him because they believe he shares their prejudices and enemies. His pugilistic style and willingness to buck civility norms to denigrate the people they despise is what has endeared him to them. This is why they say "he tells it like it is." Immigrants and people of color are criminals and welfare cheats, lbgtqi people are perverts, feminists are baby killers, and the democrats are Muslim loving communists. These are the supposed "simple facts" he speaks.

Authoritarians above all want to see the people they despise be punished and excluded from positions of influence. Immigrants are being sent to camps, aid to foreigners was stopped, Obamas legacy is being wiped out, roe v wade was overturned, trans people are afraid, and libs are crying. This is all they want. And since trump gives them all they want, they will defend all his actions to bolster the legitimacy of their movement.

u/popswheelie Jun 21 '26

Why shouldn't Illegal immigrants be sent to camps?

2

u/Available-Ad-6013 Sep 02 '26

Because they’re human beings that statistically help the economy and commit less crimes than legal citizens.

What you're seeing is people who see what they want to see in another person, at core.

This is a huge component of human relationships and even has a name when applied to romantic feelings - limerence.

It's people being attracted to qualities they have ascribed onto someone else without those qualities being there.

To an extent, that's an organic process that people are going to do on their own. You can encourage that process in people by mirroring them. In politics, that's populism - just reflecting back to people what they want to see. Trump isn't very good at much but he is good at figuring out what people want and finding a way to make them feel like they got it.

What you're seeing is political limerence and no, it's not logical because that's not how limerence works.

Trump is a parody of an actual president

2

u/daretoeatapeach May 24 '26

About a month ago I watched a video that I can't stop thinking about. It was about Walter Benjamin's description of fascism as the aesthetic overtaking the political. At first I thought, that's a neat idea, but now I see it all the time and it seems really accurate.

I have tried to explain to people that fascism isn't a legitimate ideology so much as it is a con, a takeover of empires in decline wherein a strong man points to easy answers when state solutions have failed to produce the prosperity of the empire's Golden age.

Benjamin's idea perfectly encapsulates this. when the empire fails to provide the lifestyle its citizens have become accustomed to, there is no useful distinction between a real politician and someone who is play acting at filling the role. Trump perfected play acting at being a wealthy successful businessman on The Apprentice. Now he is doing the same thing as president. As you say, a a parody.

He is only able to get away with this because people have lost faith in the efficacy of actual politicians.

There are a multitude of reasons = because hes relatable. They see themselves in him. A lot also care more about hurting others than they care about actually benefiting themselves or their loved ones. They are also in too deep and cant possibly admit they were wrong.

5

u/spottie_ottie May 23 '26

I'm as anti MAGA as it gets but I wouldn't claim he's not a smart and talented guy. His talents are used for corruption and manipulation unfortunately and his aims are short sighted and self serving

14

u/Lyretongue May 23 '26

I think it's pretty evident he's not smart by the way he speaks and acts.

2

u/MarkusKromlov34 May 24 '26

He is definitely not smart. He’s talented and experienced in his (ab)use of power but that doesn’t mean he is actually smart.

2

u/spottie_ottie May 24 '26

What does actually smart mean to you? Leading an insurrection and still coming back to win a popular vote a few years later pretty impressive. Getting his followers to believe the opposing party is the corrupt side while enriching himself at a level 100x anything that's come before. Making people immune to his crimes and betrayals of the country. Nobody else could do that. His not smart brain did that. It ain't good but damn it's impressive.

3

u/MarkusKromlov34 May 24 '26

Smart like a rat is smart perhaps. But his limited actual intelligence and apparent poor education are constantly on display making him fail any reasonable definition of smart.

> “He repeatedly displays a lack of scientific understanding or awareness of fundamental facts concerning the world around us. He unashamedly places this ignorance on public display, inventing wild opinions to cover for a gap in his knowledge rather than being able to extrapolate, avoid mistakes, and defer to expert advice.”

Examples include talking about flushing lungs with disinfectant during the covid pandemic, claiming raking prevented fires, nuclear devices could stop tornados, exercise is misguided because people have energy like a battery, people in hist said things they obviously didn’t, countries are constituted in ways they clearly aren’t, windmill noise causes cancer, etc etc.

3

u/schmyndles May 24 '26

I don't think that's intelligence. Those are the actions of someone who has been protected from consequences his whole life, and just assumes it will continue that way. Unfortunately for our country, it has.

It's a majority luck combined with intelligent but immoral people around him keeping him safe. Without his lawyers, he would've been gone years ago. There's no way he alone could've saved his ass against the numerous crimes he's committed. Without the mouthpieces to "decipher" what Trump is really saying, his words might have held consequences. Without his fall guys he wouldn't have had the degree of separation to keep him from being held accountable. And the biggest one, without daddy's money being used to fix and/or hide all of his failures, he might have actually experienced what it's like to lose.

Add all that to a personality disorder so malignant that the entirety of mankind couldn't fight it, a government still dependant on "gentleman's agreements" over laws, and a country of bigoted idiots desperate to feel like they were still in control, and you get Trump. He is truly the example of mediocrity plus money falling upwards, being pushed up by more mediocrity wanting to believe they have the same chance.

4

u/botwiper5000 May 23 '26

Because he's only an idiot concerning matters of science, history, community. He fits the profile of an evangelist preacher. Promises everything, delivers nothing. But he does it with an heir of believability that ropes uncritical thinkers in.

3

u/voinekku May 23 '26

Trump's brilliance is a little bit of a catch 22.

He's clearly doing and saying a lot of things that are incredibly stupid and ignorant, but at the same time he's charismatic and strategic enough to run a cult that grants him one of the most powerful positions in the world.

The only question is whether his stupid statements and actions are a clever ruse in service of the latter, or if he is genuinely that simple? If it is a ruse, he's been incredibly consistent for decades now. If it's authentic, it clearly indicates how a single cognitive measure cannot capture the ability of a person.

2

u/t234k May 23 '26

It's confirmation bias

2

u/ThorvaldGringou May 23 '26

Outside of the cult, majority of Maga supporters who actually study and have radical but rational reasons to support him, is just to move the overton window.

Yes this is such a sad way to see politics. It abandons the political world and embraces ignorance and destruction.

“The God-King is so clever that the dumb bad things we see him do are really clever good things that mere mortals aren’t clever enough to understand. Just trust in Him and everything will be fine.”

2

u/F90 May 24 '26

They are listening to him in a complete different frequency and background that you are.

2

u/That_randomdutchguy May 24 '26

Have you ever considered they may see aspects of themselves in the persona he presents, that they're possibly a bit ashamed of, and supporting him in reachong the highest of highs allows them to vicariously live out their power fantasies?

Just a thought.

1

u/Rich_Performer_5697 May 23 '26

For context, I'm european, not american. So I only see this from the outside. But large parts of Europe and America shares some important elements here. It's not necessarily about Trump being brilliant. I doubt many people think that. But for the people who voted for him, he's representing someone who's standing up to the establishment. The media, academia, mainstream politics, civil administration. We have the same in Europe. Reform UK, AfD in Germany, RN in France, they're all got this rural working class profile, and they portrait their opponents as the urban, educated elites. It's very similar. In FPTP systems, many people don't vote for the person or party they support the most, but they vote opposite of that they despise the most. So for rural, working class people, that's democrats in USA. And Labour in UK.

2

u/Funny_Preference_916 May 23 '26

What country are you from? Because I was in the UK back in September 2025. And when I was in London I was hearing about Nigel farage. The guy who was the Main guy who got the people to vote on Brexit. And even though brexit already went through

But also the Fact that they can even think Trump is working against the establishment. He’s part of the establishment now. Look at all the rich billionaires that are in his cabinet and are on his team of economic advisors. So really, his antiestablishment populism was a joke. He’s managed to make over $800 million while in the White House in just one year.

1

u/Rich_Performer_5697 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

I'm not saying the populists are working against the establishment. I'm saying they're presenting themselves as if they are. It's not isolated to USA or UK. It's a part of a larger wave of right wing populism. There's a disconnect between many of the traditional politial parties and their voters. This gap that has appeared is being filled by right wing populist parties. And the traditional parties are failing to counter it.

Prof Paula Schleiter from Oxford Uni explains it much better than me here.

https://youtu.be/y297HGq9WwQ?t=1073

I'd like to add to this that "the esablishment" isnt the same as "those who are rich", or "those who are currently in power". The establishment is those who has traditionally been in control and who still dominates other sectors than the executive and the legislature. In France the establishment in centre-right republicans and centre-left social democrats. Theyre not in power, but theyre the traditional power and they still have influence. They have formed the public sector, academia, media, courts. In Argentina, the Peronists are no longer in power but theyre still the establishment. They appointed the judges, the civil servant leaders, they have the media and academia. This is the establishment. It's much wider than just the politicians currently controlling things.

1

u/I405CA May 24 '26

Part of it is about owning the libs, which actually is code for sneering at those who are perceived as snobs.

Democrats may want to think that they speak for working class people. But they never seem to speak with or listen to working class people.

What the Dems don't get is that many of the working class may have less education, but they feel more intelligent than those who are white collared and have degrees. They look down upon those who don't get their hands dirty or use tools or repair things or are scared of firearms when they are comfortable with all of those things. They see the liberals as weak and effete and lacking practical skills and are therefore beneath them.

Trump makes them feel as if he is one of them, even though he grew up in New York and probably couldn't repair a toilet or change a tire to save his life.

1

u/LiftSleepRepeat123 May 24 '26

Part of it is about owning the libs, which actually is code for sneering at those who are perceived as snobs.

It's more than a class thing. The Dark Enlightenment is the basis for MAGA. Mencius Moldbug's paper A Gentle Introduction is one of the founding documents of this movement, even though most of the ideas have been thoroughly watered down and mixed with populist sentiment over time.

The point is, Moldbug was the first to bring the red pill / blue pill distinction to a political space (though one could argue that the Matrix was always trying to do that initially), and he also defined this concept of an "establishment" that was thoroughly "leftist" by definition. Of course, he doesn't mean populist when he says leftist. He means the bureaucratic institutions that enforce policies of care.

MAGA isn't in a class war, except at the surface level. It's really about wanting to destroy the whole system and then remake it.

2

u/Riokaii May 24 '26

Becausw they are also pure idiots.

I wish it was more complicated than that, but it really isn't.

1

You said he hasn’t grown with experience.

He obviously has grown in his ability to seized the reigns of executive power and control over the entrenched government bureaucracy vs his first term.

It’s like night and day.

2

u/Longjumping-Ad6219 May 24 '26

Please explain how any Trump supporter thinks Trump pulling out of WHO complaining about 500 million to save Americans from ebola, right after covid, was too much, but somehow 1.7 billion in our tax dollars to give to people who knowingly attacked the US capitol. Or the 1 billion for a ballroom 99. 9% of Americans will never be allowed near. Or an arch or a plane for Trump, or 2 billion a day for Iran war, or 300 billion for ICE, or 1.5 Trillion for the military.

1

u/LiftSleepRepeat123 May 24 '26

Do you want the psychological answer or the political science one? Like, do you want to know what causes delusion, or do you want to know what causes people to form alliances in political spaces? You've smuggled these into one question, as though one would only ever form a political alliance (or at least, a bad one) out of a delusion, which is what makes this question a poor fit for this forum.

1

u/TheBoxerBySandG May 24 '26

One bitter pill I’ve had to swallow in life is that stupid people far outnumber smart people.

If you want the answer to your question in one sentence, it’d be that.

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '26

Trump supporters support him because he has made it acceptable to be overtly racist. Not all of his supporters, but a significant percentage, maybe the majority. This racism has been a part of America from the get go, but it has always been in the closet and masked by being called state's rights or separate but equal, by claiming we are an exclusively English speaking country, by demonizing non-Christian religion or, in the case of Catholics, claiming they are more allegiant to the pope than their own country; the whole originalist thing pushed by a conservative Supreme Court is a lame attempt to justify racist and disenfranchising policies. Today no one is hiding behind any of these, and Trump is considered to be the reason why this latent American characteric is out of the closet and out in the open. Consider that almost all other Trump policies are actively disadvantageous to these supporters. Voting for Trump is in so many ways voting against their interests. Even with all the lies this truth would become apparent eventually. But all can be forgiven as long as they don't need to hide their true racist natures.

Seriously no seriously you do not come at me with the word, trumped dereangment syndrome, and accuse me of being deranged. When we have a president who believes windmills cause cancer. And says the street of Hormuz will open up naturally, naturally yeah right just like a fault. And who is lying about an election? He lost 5 ago, and claiming he won. And then acts like January 6 was a day of love.

Don’t Come to me with the word deranged, when the right wing thanks that Donald Trump was sent down from God and is the messiah.

You know it’s deranged, thinking Donald Trump The most immoral person immoral person ever to be President Is practically the second coming of Jesus Christ.

1

u/Sensitive-Sign9880 May 25 '26

Another completely unhinged, untruthful rant.

But this is what derangement syndrome is. In your case, given your age, it probably has to do with two things. 1) Your frontal cortex isn’t fully developed, leaving you with an inability to regulate the control of your emotions. 2) This is compounded by the fact that left-wingers suffer from mental health problems and abnormalities more than their right-wing counterparts.

In many ways it is, as mentioned above, derangement. Another example is how you mock Trump supporters by citing anecdotal evidence through an oversimplification and using that as a justification to arrive at your opinionated conclusion that Trump supporters lack intelligence, all the while failing to acknowledge the lack of sophistication and facts in your own retort.

This is solely because you’re unable to process your emotions over the anger you feel at other people who have different viewpoints than you. It’s a reply predicated in a lack of intelligence but more importantly maturity.

"Let's teach those smug pilots in the cockpit and let me fly the plane!" - Random Joe.

1

u/Opening-Heart3818 May 30 '26

Its simple - these are disillusioned people who are desperate to find someone to believe in. Enter conman Donald Trump who knows how to exploit their disillusionment for his gain. If you want to blame someone for the rise of Trump then blame us, the voters. We're the ones who keep voting in the same do-nothing politicians over and over again who do absolutely nothing for the people they're supposed to serve. I get why MAGA wants someone to believe in; so do I. But I was smart enough to know not to trust Donald Trump.

1

u/pacman2081 Jun 08 '26

Rise of Trump is driven by two factors

  1. Hispanic immigration

  2. loss of factory jobs due to free trade

Ask yourself which developed country allows illegal immigration the way USA does. Ask yourself which country allowed large scale loss of factory jobs

1

u/Funny_Preference_916 Jun 08 '26

Why do we blame immigrants? Why not blame the rich oligarchs like big pharma and big oil who bought out our government. And shipped our jobs to China and Vietnam. What about the Supreme Court who practically legalized, political bribery, saying that corporations can spend unlimited amounts of money without any disclosure requirements. And the CEOs of large companies, who pay absolutely no taxes. Because of stock buybacks, why don’t people on the right ever blame the big dogs the politicians, the corporations the people in power.

The truth is, is that a lot of these undocumented immigrants actually pay more in taxes than Jeff Bezos, or Elon musk do. And they’re working jobs that no Americans are doing anyway or even care to do. All these jobs in agriculture, picking vegetables and fruits, no white people are doing these jobs, nor do they even care to do it, but someone’s gotta do it.

You are right about one thing. Yes, no other country has allowed their jobs to go overseas like we have. Simply because countries like Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, they have industrial policies in place that protect their manufacturing base. They see it is vital to promoting and protecting their own national industry. We had those policies in place until Ronald Reagan from the beginning of the industrial revolution all the way into the late 1980s.

1

u/pacman2081 Jun 08 '26

"Why do we blame immigrants?"

Do not equate legal immigrants with illegal immigrants

"The truth is, is that a lot of these undocumented immigrants actually pay more in taxes than Jeff Bezos, or Elon musk do."

No developed country allows illegal immigration the way USA does. If that was true, more countries would allowed unskilled immigrants to come in.

The cost of educating their kids, providing healthcare and social security out weighs any contributions

"Simply because countries like Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, they have industrial policies in place that protect their manufacturing base."

It is a mixed bag here. Those countries do not have mega-technology companies we have

1

u/Funny_Preference_916 Jun 08 '26

I just gave you all the examples of the people who are screwing this country over and you just ignored them the rich oligarchs the CEOs who don’t care about their workers and they’ll just send their company overseas and then you just didn’t even care you’re like nope it’s all the illegals. What’s it gonna take man like seriously what’s it gonna take for you guys to ever go after the people who are in positions of power like the business elite.

1

u/pacman2081 Jun 08 '26

No developed country allows illegal immigration the way USA does. I note you have not refuted it in any manner. Yet the Democrats actively encourage illegal immigration. And you wonder why Trump is around.

Amazon deliver goods cheaper for most Americans. 200 million Americans have Prime membership. I am not a current Amazon Prime member. But I have used it in the past. AWS from Amazon is the dominant cloud computing platform. Not sure if it matters to you. Bezos is responsible for these

Elon Musk is the driving force behind Tesla. 23% of California's cars are electric or plug-in-hybrids. It will be the main reason we can cut CO2 emissions down the road

1

u/Funny_Preference_916 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Again, you’re going back to the illegals you’re not answering my question about the wealthy oligarch. See you think it’s a good thing that these guys run our government. And that big Pharma has all these lobbyists that keep our drug prices jacked up so high.

Please quit the BS. You guys put out there like all the immigrants the single mom on welfare they are the ones taking from society. It’s like, can you ever admit that the rich people are the ones fucking over the average American. You always blame the underdogs it makes no sense.

The fact that we have a for-profit education system where all these student loans and colleges are tied to wall street banks. And the reason why health insurance costs are so high is because the CEOs of all these healthcare companies are taking bloated compensation packages. Elon musk, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. If you combined all their wealth together, it would take 1000 years to spend all their money for each person. It would take 1000 years to spend it all. You guys come from the idiotically school thought that the rich people have the ordinary Americans best interest in mind.

If there’s any person I’m gonna blame for this country’s problems I blame the billionaires like the people from Enron, The lobbyists who run our government, and people like the bankers, who drove the economy off the cliff in 2008. They stole way more from the average American and robbed the taxpayers of their hard earned money, way more then a bunch of undocumented immigrants did. They got $700 billion in ballouts.

And you’re talking about cheap goods that Amazon sells yeah, all the cheap goods they sell are all made in China. And why is that because of all the deregulation as well as the gutting of workers protections. Which was largely started by Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. All of the shit made our companies less and less competitive, and made it easier for other countries to come in and steal our jobs.

1

u/pacman2081 Jun 08 '26

No developed country allows illegal immigration the way USA does.

"nd that big Pharma has all these lobbyists that keep our drug prices jacked up so high."

90% of all prescriptions are generics. The cost of generic drugs is low. You want latest and greatest. someone has to pay for it. you cannot get some of these drugs in Europe.

"The fact that we have a for-profit education system where all these student loans and colleges are tied to wall street banks. "

Education is free to bottom 30% and top 30% can afford it. you are free to shut down expensive private colleges. I could care less.

1

u/Funny_Preference_916 Jun 08 '26

You’re very Mall informed, College is affordable for so many people am why is college debt, student loan debt, the highest percentage of debt anyone owes in the entire country. compared to where we were 40 to 60 years ago people like my parents and grandparents never had any student debt. Because college back in the 1960s was virtually free you’d have to pay for books and for the classes but they were like 10 to 20 bucks a unit. Colleges didn’t start charging big tuition till the 1970s.

In America, we pay some of the highest drug prices in the world. What are you even talking about? In Europe, you get drug discounts. If you go to states like Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota, you got people that are driving over the border to Canada to get prescription drugs because they’re much cheaper because Overthere the government negotiates with the drug companies. Forget genarics what look at drugs like insulin which is a life line drug. People were paying $300 dollars out of pocket, now it’s $30 dollars. Because Joe Biden in 2023 capped it. And it’s worked great. Plus insulin was dirt cheap to make. You had drug companies jaking up the price to boost there profits.

You’re doing the classical thing that rich elites do you shift the blame from the people who actually have the ability to call the shots and society and shoot it down to the people who are the underdogs. You look at it like the corporate world doesn’t do anything wrong and it’s all the people Who are the under classes? WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS COUNTRIES PROBLEM.

FFS, The single mom on welfare, and the old lady who lives on Social Security they’re not the reason the average person, the American can’t get ahead. And if you really believe that, don’t talk to me anymore you need freaking counseling if you really think that because you’re really detached from reality.

1

u/pacman2081 Jun 08 '26

"You’re very Mall informed, College is affordable for so many people am why is college debt, student loan debt, the highest percentage of debt anyone owes in the entire country. "

I live in California - community college is free. Cal State is $7000 per year. UC is $14,000 per year. The real costs of college are rents and living expenses. If someone wants to spend $200,000 on their education, it is their problem, not mine.

1

u/Soggy-Primary-4855 Jun 21 '26

Not true and by the way if this was true why not blame people hiring them? Fun fact Trump was busted for hiring undocumented people.

1

u/pacman2081 Jun 21 '26

it is completely irrelevant to the discussion

EDIT: conveniently sidestepped

Ask yourself which developed country allows illegal immigration the way USA does. Ask yourself which country allowed large scale loss of factory jobs

1

Don’t expect a bigot to understand that hypocrisy

IMO, the why is ultimately the power of belief. Trumps base believes in him, and logic or evidence rarely can overcome belief, especially with a cottage industry built around affirming those beliefs.

So how do you kill a belief? You can't kill it or reason it away. It needs to fade away, and that only happens when if we stop letting them win elections.

The average I.Q. is 100. That is pretty stupid. So to these people, trump is smart.

Trump campaign set a trap and liberals walked right into it. Liberals who blindly rant and rave about legalizing crime, violence, rioting, etc have made reasonable people come to the realization that they need to do something to stop the insanity. So, even if you’re appalled by trump, he’s the best option they have to stop the destruction.

How could anyone vote for this criminal after January 6 is beyond me. I never voted for him. He's a disaster and we have lost standing in the world. He said Jan 6 was a day of love. He let Covid get worse and did not care how many people died.
