Hadn’t this been apparent from at least Lau & Redlawsk (2001)?

Yeah but it doesn't hurt to replicate once in a while and see if things track

Agreed, and it's worth saying what it replicates. "Voters use shortcuts" goes back at least to Converse's "The Nature of Belief Systems in Mass Publics" (1964), with its low ideological constraint. The more optimistic reply came from Popkin's The Reasoning Voter (1991) and Lupia's "Shortcuts versus Encyclopedias" (APSR, 1994), which argued that heuristics can let poorly informed voters reach roughly the choices they'd make with full information.

What looks new in Banavar and Bansak, going by the Berkeley write-up, is the measurement. They classify individual decision rules in multi-attribute choices: about 54% dominated by a single factor, 14% "counting" attributes, just under 30% comprehensive. Those map neatly onto the lexicographic and tallying heuristics from Gigerenzer's fast-and-frugal work.

So the interesting question isn't whether people take shortcuts, which we've known for sixty years, but whether these shortcuts lead them to the outcome they'd endorse on reflection. That's the Lupia question, and it's what I'd want a follow-up to test.
