It's been a thing since Monroe turned thirty. I believe Kim Novak (whose real name, funnily enough, is Marilyn) was the first to be labelled "this generation's Marilyn Monroe."

Edit: Lots of other actresses since then, like Ann-Margret, Raquel Welch, Farrah Fawcett, Kim Basinger, Ellen Barkin, Jessica Lange, Sharon Stone.

Edit II:and I think Marilyn herself was for a time "the next Betty Grable"

oo pick one from today.

idk i was thinking maybe Emma Watson, didn't she do UN stuff? But she's not exactly, like, HOT-HOT, supermodel victoria secret type.

A modern marilyn Monroe has to have like the charm of Sofia Vergara but the philanthropy of... a philanthropy woman

Where has this notion of MM as some sort of philanthropist come from lately? Seems to be a fairly recent thing. Talk about revisionism. She was all about sex appeal, that was her brand, always has been. Not something I'd associate with Emma Watson.

Today? If I had to pick, Kate Upton.

Really? They were contemporary and Novak peaked in 1965.

Nah, Novak was ten years younger and had just hit it big in "Vertigo". Of course everyone thought at the time she was going to be the next big thing, which never really happened, like Farrah Fawcett's career also fizzled out after "Charlie's Angels".

Funniest thing is that Sweeney is producing a movie herself where she casted herself as Kim Novak and Kim was upset about it.
