How much taxes do you think he pays a year? You probably pay more.

35

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 24 '26

Certainly if done by percentage, yes.

These people pay an average tax rate of 4%, and only pay up to $180,000 in Social Security taxes due to the cap on it.

If we removed the cap, Social Security would be solvent forever starting tomorrow.

21

u/AspectAdventurous314 Aug 24 '26

Guys like Bezos avoid even the 4% by taking a $1 salary, taking out loans against their assets and using that as capital to spend day to day.

18

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 24 '26

Right, which is what all rich people are doing: Living on low interest loans on their accrued investments.

That's exactly why we need to tax unrealized gains on stocks, just like normal people do on their property taxes.

terrible idea that will collapse the economy, of course that’s probably the goal thought isn’t it?

u/thighcrusader Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Wow you're right, I'm sure everyone would much rather the economy collapse because people can't afford food or rent rather than do anything to make billionaires pay their fair share.

S&P goes up 7-10% a year, and you think an evenly applied property tax on assets, realized or not, would make people move that money to a place it's not growing? Tax them wherever their money is. If they wanna lose more money by taking their money out of the growth machine, by all means. But it'll be taxed and put back into the economy that relies on the workers, not the parasites on top. The scenario you've been conditioned to parrot assumes a lack of enforcement, but I think you're just not creative enough. A properly motivated U.S. government could 100% force a proper solution.

U.S. already levies taxes on expats... Enforcement is only a problem if there's no motivation

Taxing unrealized gains is a terrible idea. Didn’t say I was against taxing billionaires, there are just better ways to do it.

-3

u/Elm30336 Aug 25 '26

Yet progesives want more than they make each year! Their goal is to destroy wealth as they have said they want no billionaires! They want government to control all major wealth in the USA! Bad enough they spend 7 trillion a year it’s not good enough they want to wipe out the billionaires and their 9.4 trillion, or roughly 1 year of spending by congress! So you take it all then what? Who is next that’s right millionaires. Now we are all poor! It’s ridiculous

2

u/thighcrusader Aug 25 '26

Assuming taxed money simply disappears into a void.

Assuming I care that someone who made their money exploiting labor and being subsidized by existing programs is now simply a multimillionaire. How does "no more billionaires" mean everyone's simply poor now? You're being disingenuous here. Before corporate greed spiraled out of control, a person could buy a house and support a family with multiple kids on a single-income simple job without an education. That's not poor.

So assuming progressive safety nets mean anyone on the bottom is truly poor.

Unsourced numbers.

I'd rather a government poised to do something productive with the money use it than it simply being hoarded.

You're using bad faith arguments, and have no understanding of where your money goes or what progressives advocate for. Someone think of the poor billionaires? You're ridiculous.

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Wealthy people paying their fair portion of taxes would have the opposite effect, actually.

We already did this with the New Deal, which created the middle class and funded our modern infrastructure. It brought about the most widespread economic prosperity in our history.

These uber wealthy are simply parasites on our society. They want the benefits of being in our society, while not paying their portion.

1

u/Elm30336 Aug 25 '26

Government didn’t create the middle class! The fact Europe and Japan was destroyed did! Had Europe and Japan been full force immediately after ww2 they would have eaten our lunch just like the 1960s and 1970s, issue is you romanticize a period of time that really didn’t exist, but for a very small group of people.

1

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

ok do it without taxing unrealized gains. which is dumb.

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Nope.

That's how everyone dodges taxation these days, so that's exactly what's going to be taxed.

It's not difficult to implement. Shouldn't be a huge issue.

1

u/Over_Flamingo_1853 Aug 25 '26

Source?

1

u/Originaltenshi Aug 25 '26

FDRs New Deal would be the source, no? Or different comment?

1

u/Over_Flamingo_1853 Aug 25 '26

New deal didn’t crash the economy. Was responding to https://www.reddit.com/r/PoursTea/s/I3EY1LA53y it’s like when they claim taxing billionaires makes them leave. Theres no empirical source that proves it.

Which I tackled here https://www.reddit.com/r/Maxcactus_TrailGuide/s/p9iZD082Z1

1

u/Originaltenshi Aug 25 '26

Gotcha that was the second question in my comment. My mistake homie. Yeah that dudes just plain wrong

1

u/Over_Flamingo_1853 Aug 25 '26

I gotchew big dog lol

1

u/kaVaralis Aug 25 '26

Real too big to fail mentally ya got there. Didn't know bush jr was on reddit

1

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

not sure what that means. Just not trying to pay taxes on my 401k each year. Taxing unrealized gains is beyond dumb.

1

u/guymn999 Aug 25 '26

thats a wild thing to boast as you sit in one of the worst economies in 50 years.

1

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

by your standard or who’s? My economy is perfectly fine.

7

u/TrickyChildhood2917 Aug 24 '26

Accounting tricks (legal for the rich) destroying America every April for the past 30 years.

4

u/unpersoned Aug 25 '26

I remember that a few years back he was on the news for not only not paying taxes (because of this low-interest loan hack rich people live off of), but actually getting rebates on expenses on his kids' private schools.

1

u/libertarianinus Aug 25 '26

Rich people also use 501c3 to pay 0% tax

2

u/TrickyChildhood2917 Aug 24 '26

That’s crazy talk, it’s gonna take a Democrat to make that happen… oh wait :(

2

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Our government is most certainly riddled with corporate sellouts who actively keep the citizens from having things that benefit them with our own money.

I'd argue that Democrats have fewer, not that it ultimately matters.

2

u/Perfect-System2504 Aug 25 '26

Social Security would already by simple math be solvent forever if we stopped taking money out of it for other things ....

2

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

That's an urban myth.

The Social Security trust fund has been in place and untouched since it's inception in 1939. What has changed are the laws around it and who has to pay in, and how much.

It's never been put into the "General Fund" of the Government.

Social Security did used to be fully untaxed until Ronald Regan was president though, which started in 1983.

1

u/icemanpallmall Aug 25 '26

Cant have that just like we cant have a VA that isnt worse than basic health insurance. The people in charge want you to give them every ounce of your being and then disappear.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

They don't pay $180,000 in taxes, you're confusing the tax withheld with the wage base. Social security is 6.2% withheld on up to $184,500 in wages. That means the tax withheld is $11,439 for 2026 (increases every year)

Even if you're a billionaire you're only paying a max of $11,439 in social security tax. Medicare tax is a little different with no cap and the rate does increase after $200,000 in wages.

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

That's what I just said.

The Social Security taxes are capped at $180,000 in income.

You pay the same amount if you make 180k, 180 million, or 5 billion.

If they removed that cap, it would take care of any financial issues Social Security has forever. Rich people don't want to pay into something they'll never need, but that's part of living in a society.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

That's literally what I just said

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Yes, when you reiterated what I said in the previous comment. lol

You were the only one confused in this equation.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

No I was clarifying what you said since what you said originally was incorrect. You said they pay up to "$180,000 in Social Security taxes due to the cap"

But they don't pay up to $180,000 in taxes so I wanted to make sure that was pointed out. Sorry to ruffle your feathers, hope you have a better day!

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

You really don't need to keep replying. It's fine.

1

u/profstotch Aug 25 '26

No you hang up first

1

u/Guilty-Fold4857 Aug 25 '26

Most of what they make is never considered income so it’s not taxed and considered part of that percentage. So effectively it’s even lower. Appreciation upon death isn’t taxed.

1

u/Blacksad9999 Aug 25 '26

Right.

Exactly why we should tax unrealized stock gains that they take loans out on to live off of.

9

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 24 '26

2.75b in income tax last year for Amazon.

On 77b income.

So a lot of dollars.. but not enough of a %.

12

u/CombinationOwn1604 Aug 24 '26

An effective federal tax rate of 1.4%

3

u/ShadowWalker2205 Aug 25 '26

OMG how will they survive these extortion rates

8

u/CrystalEntity1984 Aug 24 '26

But how much did he pay, he may own shares but he's not all of Amazon. The "Wealth vs. Income" Gap: Billionaires like Bezos typically draw a very small annual cash salary (historically around $82,000 from Amazon), meaning personal income taxes fluctuate heavily depending on when they choose to liquidate or sell stock shares. Stock Sales: The $2.7 billion estimate was triggered when Bezos sold roughly $13.6 billion worth of Amazon shares. Effective Rate Context: While $2.7 billion is a massive cash sum, financial analysts noted it amounted to roughly 4.5% of his total net worth increase during that surge year and roughly 1% of his overall cumulative fortune. I would like to only pay 1% income tax , average person pays roughly 30%.

6

u/Default_Name_6969 Aug 24 '26

People this rich dont pay taxes on anything really. As you said most of these rich assholes have a small salary that gets taxed and then millions-billions in stocks. They then use those stocks to take out zero interest loans to live off of. when it comes time to pay that loan they borrow from another bank to pay it off. It's like putting everything on credit and then paying off that credit card with another zero interest credit card on repeat. They borrow until they die never selling stocks so that they dont have to pay the taxes on stock gains and there is no taxes on those loans.

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 25 '26

You switched in the middle of that from income to worth to make your percentage.

1

u/ActivePeace33 Aug 24 '26

Bezos paid about 9% of that, from the profits of the 9% of stock he owns.

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 25 '26

So he paid taxed gains to pay taxes.. love it.

0

u/Dangerous_Career_821 Aug 25 '26

Corporations aren’t people. Taxes on corporations, just like the hated tariffs, will ultimately be passed on to the consumer.

1

u/Familiar-Spray-4678 Aug 24 '26

No I mean 60,000 net or gross. Like I would need more gross to have 60,000 net. I’m not referring to his taxes.
