It will take a long time for the US to recover from this and itâs not really about being mad at them. Itâs about the fact that theyâve proven themselves to be an incredibly unreliable partner.

The truth is America may never recover from this, the national debt seems to be starting to concern investors, US bonds are no longer seen as a safe haven they once were, the bond yield has been rising making that debt more expensive to service, countries are selling US debt and pulling their physical gold out of America, China is making more deals to broaden its trading relationships around the world while America is losing the faith of its partners. This isnât a case of it will be ok with the next administration, it could take a generation or more for America to prove itself a safe and reliable training partner and ally. But the power and respect that is lost will be gained by other countries, countries that will be reluctant to give it up again.

In 2016 I wasn't mad, just disappointed. In 2024, I wasn't mad, or disappointed, but ashamed. I feel ashamed of America every day Trump continues to hold office and the rhetoric and lobbies and billionaires and war on intelligence and rational thought that drive the US government to commit more and greater crimes against it's own people and against people around the world.
It's this barbaric notion that "you can't stop me" is sufficient reason to do anything. Fuck you and your exceptionalism. You're bad people. Learn humility, learn empathy, learn that you should never stop learning. Learn to cultivate relationships. Find strength in diversity. Greatness comes from community, not from dominance.

We Canadians have learned that the US cannot be trusted. They've proven that treaties, agreements, rights, and laws mean nothing to them.
Sure the next administration might be 'a good one' but Canada can't work with a country whose good faith is dependant on whoever is in power at the moment.

Sure the next administration might be 'a good one' but Canada can't work with a country whose good faith is dependant on whoever is in power at the moment.
Specifically, that the US is effectively schizophrenic - every 4-8 years, they'll flip-flop, and either they get a Dem that gets X amount of time to unfuck what the GQP did, or they get a GQP president that helps all his grifting billionaire pals, mostly because the Dems don't get enough time to undo all the damage the GQP, so right-wingers and "undecideds" go all "See, they can't do it, get our people back in!".

decades is optimistic. it is way more likely u will continue to decline untill America is no longer the economic powerhouse it is today.
we see systems already in motion to remove American influence in governments in places like the EU. and the EU is considering expanding to canada and maybe even Australia.
china is rapidly becoming the reliable partner because they keep there word. while America have proven a single man is capable to disrupting decades long trade agreements and random tariffs at a drop of the hat.
America would be lucky to maintain there economic powerhouse situation into the next century.
it is entirely possible that this is the decade historians will study as the beginning of the fall of the American super power. just like how we study Julius Caesar as the fall of the roman republic.
although i think there is still a chance. if u can make him be held accountable for his actions, if institutions are changed to be no longer influenced by a single man. trade deals cant be changed on a whim of a single person or powers exploited again. then

This is what a lot of people arenât talking about enough. Trump isnât the disease, heâs a symptom of a much bigger disease. What is happening now took decades to do, including hacking away at education, widening the wealth gap, making people too reliant on systems they can take away at any time, the psyops to pit citizens against each other, basically making people too dumb sick and poor to organize and physically fight back. If we had a healthy system to begin with in 2015, we would never have gotten this far.

It is a warning that no one country should have so much influence over other countries.
The deficit has ballooned and will take a long time get control of again. Republicans typically inflate the deficit leaving democrats to try and balance it. They always talk about fiscal responsibility, but have none.
Donât get me wrong, both parties have failed the American people. They let corporations take control of the government away from the people.
We need change!
We need a progressive partyâŠ.
12
u/Medill1919 20d ago
Republican fiscal responsibility is a pure lie.
7
u/JakeHelldiver 20d ago
Nobody has ever voted republican for the economics. Not one time.
5
u/Biguitarnerd 20d ago
Sort of⊠so technically no but also yes. Many blue collar workers vote republican because republicans typically loosen restrictions and regulations which results in a short term gain long term loss but to the average oilfield worker (as an example) what they see is more work and more money in their personal finances when a republican president is running the Oval Office.
Trump promised an economic boom and far more people voted for him for that reason than they did for his anti immigration stance or his regressive social stance. He didnât deliver on that though but people believed him because he was lucky enough to benefit from Obamaâs work for the first part of his first term. As soon as a major crises happened it tanked but republicans blamed that on Covid and said any president would have had the same issue. They didnât recognize that he was riding Obamaâs economic coattails until he couldnât.
Why is this important at all?
Itâs critical that the Democratic Party begins to talk to this more. They need to recognize that many many more people vote on what they believe to be financial security (Job opportunities) over social issues. Obama did a great job of that, thatâs why he had two terms, so did Clinton (for all his faults) they fell short in the last election and we got this dude again whoâs entire business model for whatever heâs been in control of for his entire adult life is sucking it dry to advance his personal wealth which is exactly what he is doing again.

Itâs not just about reputation , other countries are building stronger ties and investing in infrastructure and creating regulations to sell products, oil and gas, critical minerals, cars, weapons and everything else, there are billions of dollars being spent to facilitate this. The USA being everyoneâs preferred customer isnât the default anymore. Itâs going to be Americas job to show that I can be a reliable and stable partner for the rest of the world again, and prove thatâs itâs better deal for the countries to deal with American again. But itâs not just the next administration, when companies or countries are looking to invest billions of dollars, theyâre not just looking at the next administration itâs the one after that and the one after that. Also countries that find themselves in better positions or with a bit more global power or prominence arenât just going to give that up.
We still have two more years in which current U.S. trade and foreign-policy decisions could accelerate diversification away from America. It feels like itâs something that will take a decade to recover from this if it ever does.
Even if a future administration restores a more predictable U.S. foreign and trade policy, some of the diversification occurring now may be difficult to reverse because countries will have invested capital, created institutions, signed agreements and developed alternative supply chains.

Thatâs my concern with the next election- itâs pretty obvious voters will choose someone besides Trump. But the four years after that election will be spent by Democrats trying to repair everything the GOP has destroyed. No forward progress will be made, itâll all be about fixing what he broke. Issues like Medicare For All wonât be at the top priority, so it wonât get done in that first term. Single issue voters will be angry when their issue didnât get addressed. And in 2032, voters will be pissed there was no forward progress, so theyâll vote for a Republican.

Therin lies the problem and why the world will likely never regain the trust they had for the US. It's citizens are too uneducated (and selfish) and it's corporations are too unethical (and selfish) for a rebuilding period to be successful.
Honestly, a Democrat administration needs to focus on two things in the first term, ensuring justice is served for all that allowed Trump and his cronies to crap all over the Constitution, and shore up the laws so it can't happen again. Until that is done, nothing can improve long term. Why push for Medicare for All if the next administration will just remove it day 1?

Guys, reality check here: You will never regain what little trust you had before. The Trump flavour of heavy-handed meddling, threats and deep idiocy have always been an issue - it's merely 1œ times worse this time. You should focus on steering US decline towards a semi-stable trade federation (10-15 Gilead-like theocracies semi-peacefully trading with prosperous Maine and NCR etc., while a post-oil Texas has become the sole third world country on the continent) ... the alternative is a really ugly civil war. Under the US's superpower status the past 100 years, humanity has flourished like no other period in history. Exploding global cooperation, more peace than ever, insane technological development etc. Imagine how bad it could have been if it was a dictatorship like Russia or China. Also, the US is top 5 in median income world wide. Not average, but MEDIAN. That's crazy high amounts of quality of life for a country of 350 mill.
While many of those arguments are still valid, I just shut up about it these days.

It's not just reputation. Trump showed the world what is behind the curtain.
We've seen that your power isn't as powerful as we thought. We've all realised that without US bases in other countries, you have no power. There has been a seismic shift in the amount of leverage the USA has or used to have.

u/External-Geologist62 20d ago
The US has been a declining empire since the late 60s. But since most Americans don't have a passport or travel out of the country they have continued to believe the America is number 1 when the statistics tell a completely different story.
But Trump has accelerated our decline and don't kid yourselves into thinking that the people's of the world will separate his actions from those of all Americans as his crap has not just effected our economy, he has effected the world economy.

All these comments saying years/decades⊠nope. Never again. Every 4-8 years Americans will do the dumbest thing ever and screw the entire world again and again. The only thing happening in the upcoming years/decades is the collapse of American influence. Good luck; youâll need it

3
u/ZenZigZag 20d ago
We may never get our reputation back- More damning than anything that he's done, and more damning that he was elected twice, is the speed at which he was able to do it. Any potential ally now knows that they can trust us for a maximum of eight years unless an until we make some structural changes and show a willingness to enforce consequences for shenanigans.

You say years, but more like decades. What country would trust our current leader (even if it was a really good one) when morons in the us can just elect another Trump that will just tear everything up again? We would have to do an overhaul on pres powers, put actual penalties in place, make nice with world leaders, and do that over the course of multiple diff pres before I would trust us as a country again and I am just some dummy on reddit.

It will never happen. The US was riding post WWII exceptionalism, and now thatâs gone. Now we are no longer a super power because we have alienated our allies and sold our ridiculous debt to the highest bidder. Trump, and whomever were instructing him, hit the target dead center when they brought us down from the inside. Decades might give us time to rebuild some global ties, but we will never ever be who we were. The price for a republican overthrow of our democracy? Everything that made us great. Now they feast on the carcass.

We are EASILY 30 years of SENSIBLE leadership away from being invited back to the adults table on global summits and trade agreements. The very first time a MAGA adjacent or Nazi sounding candidate gets more than say 35% of the popular vote, the World will put us back at the kids table.
This isnt a TRUMP IS THE ISSUE problem. This is an issue with our voting populace and the senators and representatives those people elect. This takes generations to fix at home, and decades to fix globally.

I live in a very prosperous european country. I work a job where alot of choices between different vendors need to be made. I've seen a very sharp increase in the amount of declined salespitches from american made vendors.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg because over here in Europe we're working hard to secure new strategic economic tradedeals to further distance us from the US for the coming decades. This even goes as far as building new OS for computer systems and projects to ditch american cloud providers for European made solutions.
And these are not mild or small steps. These are well thought out strategic plans that took more than a year to work out. Europe will not veer off these plans because that ship has sailed months ago.
We're now well on our way to actuating these plans and tens of billions upon tens of billions of euros are invested into creating a new Europe that is unencumbered by a backstabbing and untrustworthy alliance member.
So yeah, DJ Trumpytrump destroyed virtually all respect, soft power and credibillity that the US had and Americans will notice the negative financial effects for the next 30 years.

All the ppl saying that it will take years, maybe a few decades to fix the relationships with other countires.
No ma dude. this will take at least a generation. I am middle aged and probably will be around for another 40-ish years. And in those 40-ish years, I will not trust America again as I used to do.
Kids that see a new, a different US President in a few years might come to a different conclusion. But ppl that are btween 20 and 40 right now and have to live in the shit-show Trump and his party has unleashed onto the world? Nah, I dont see that happen.
I dont say it out of spite, but I highly doubt that many ppl who witnessed all of this will ever be like "Yeah the US of A is cool"

Americas days of bullying allies and being a super power are over.
Trump isn't a mistake. He's the result of American society. The personification of all that is wrong with the USA.
It goes way beyond politics. A huge number of Americans are morally bankrupt bigots and until that problem is addressed, America won't change for the better.

One of the great delusions of America is it's exceptionalsim.
People from all over moved to the US, but somehow over the last 100 years they have convinced themselves they alone are inherently superior.
They have forgotten those they left behind, those who sacrificed to give them a opportunity and who have supported that for a more than a century.
And all over we were happy to support and trade them...after all they wouldn't just go against us, they are our uncles and aunts, our grandparents, our nieces and nephews, etc. yeah we have different standards, different approaches but at the end of the day we aren't just friends we are family.
But that's no longer the case, it's been made clear that this current approach isn't a one off mistake... We all make mistakes... It's what is truly desired by the people of America.
The Americans have lost their heritage, their morality and left only unearned pride.Â

Trump is a humanity problem! Racism is a White personâs problem. Importing White South Africans. Heâs f-ing with Greenland, Gulf of Mexico, hating on Canada.
Killing innocent people on boats. Starting a War. And his list of atrocities continues to grow. Trump, thinks heâs a modern version Hitler.
Then thereâs Napoleon Bonaparte. Putting trashy gold, in the Oval Office. Trump, must not know. How he met his end. Racism is costly. Look and listen to the White Farmers.
Theyâre begging! Then there are the Cattle ranchers. These ranchers are suffering. Is Trumpâs plan to import White folks from other European countries?

30 years minimum to repair the damage done to the US itself (internal - because the economy is destroyed, again) and half a century to repair world reputation.
But they ALL have to go (to prison). Do NOT make the same mistakes that were made during the US Civil War. PUNISH the guilty and don't give them a chance to come back! This means BOTH sides of the aisle!

The plain truth. It's so frustrating when a lot of us knew ten years ago that this would be the result if he continued to be president. It feels like watching people walking towards a cliff, screaming and begging them to stop. They just kept saying there is no cliff and walked off it anyways. It has been the most frustrating and surreal period of my life, realizing how susceptible and easily propagandized Americans are. I truly and honestly thought my countrymen and women were smart enough to see what he really was, and I was dumbfounded that I was wrong, twice. I have lost an untold amount of faith that I once had in my country.

The really sad part is all of the generations that have literally fought for this country and democracy just to have people that support that, support this. Those allies will be slow to come back and cautious in their dealings with us for decades if not longer. We need to insure stronger guardrails on the presidency in the future if we are to be trusted by our allies again. They will worry and rightfully so, that this country could elect another mean spirited moron.

He's an American problem. But he's not the root of it. Capital is the root.
Everything else are downstream symptoms of unregulated Capitalism.
Edit: I want to add that people love to point at Americans, and/or American leadership, and say that they are a global problem and they're the reason the world is like this.
I hate to break it to you, but almost every single country in the world is dealing with the same problems the US is. Because like I said, this is a Capitalism problem, and the world is controlled by Capital.
With very few exceptions, your country is doing the same shit that the US is doing - or is at least okay with it - , and has been doing, for decades.
But it's easy to blame the country that receives more international media attention than any other country in the world. And so they do.
Meanwhile the UN applauds Trump as he talks about never allowing Iran to have Nuclear weapons, and how we're going to eradicate them.
Wake up, people.

u/Amethyst_Scepter 20d ago
It will not take years to get our reputation back. We're not getting it pack period. The whole world watched as we backflipped willingly and enthusiastically into this mess and how we were one election from near total dictatorship.
We torched a century of standing in less than a decade as the world begged us not to. We are unreliable, unpredictable, and worst of all dangerous. No one will ever trust us again.
And we deserve it.

u/Elavia_ 20d ago edited 20d ago
You will never get back to what you had. Trump destroyed all the soft power you held since ww2 when you were by far the largest economy. China and EU have filled in the vacuum - even if you manage to kick him out (which I heavily doubt) you'll only partially recover.

u/rolyatem 20d ago
Donald Trump is not the problem.
The problem is the tens of millions who voted for him, and the people (corporate leaders, media members) who manipulated those voters into that choice.
Donald Trump will be gone one day. Those other groups will still persist and muck things up when he does go.
2
u/Bruno_Coast_127 20d ago
I honestly think the USA's reputation has been permanently tarnished by this administration. There is no going back, because Trump and his lackeys are a product of this country's mentality
