Murdered By Words 𩸠A moral quandary.

u/MomMom2111 3d ago
This comment section makes me sad. Why do so many people hate poor people? We aren't bad people, we are just poor. Foodstamps barely cover anything and you have to have a job to get them, even if you're in college, or you have to have extreme circumstances to not be working. The amounts for them are capped and they're fixed on prices from like the 1960s. Like a gallon of milk is like 3 or 4 dollars now...according to foodstamps it's cents. When you go to food pantries, they rarely have fresh food to give people because they don't last and it is wasteful to keep. They always hand out coffee, too, which is really bad for you, but many consume and need to an extent. Mostly it's frozen things, canned and boxed goods, dry things, and some snacks. So are they evil for giving out free food, too? It isn't "healthy". Show some grace and kindness. Jobs barely pay people and not to survive, even with a degree. A lot of blessed people that were taught poors are all Cletus that cooks Meth in a basement, I guess. Go out and help at a pantry, please, and meet people.

u/liquidsyphon 3d ago
Propaganda has led them to believe poor people are living rich lives off their tax dollars. None of these people have ever had to or bothered to look into the requirements to get any aid from the government.
17
u/BeBearAwareOK 3d ago
It's always how to cut SNAP.
Never, what if SNAP counts double for fresh produce, dried beans and rice, etc.
Conservative media is just wealthy people bribing rich people to preach to middle class people to blame poor people.
17
u/Possible-Library2030 3d ago
Food stamps are often used to effectively subsidize corporations. They pay their staff nothing, share holders get the profit. Poor people aren't bad. People slightly above poverty to upper middle class are just dumb and they don't realize the rich are treating them all like pawns

u/PerspectiveNew3375 3d ago
I grew up in a family that was incredibly poor and we almost certainly qualified for food assistance for my entire childhood, but my parents would never applied for them. They were convinced it was akin to theft and they were very against it to the point of letting their kids go hungry. There has been a very successful campaign to make people hate the poor, think that taking part in life saving programs that are bandaids for the system we're forced to endure is 'wrong'. Even the poor hate the poor, that's how successful the propaganda is.

Coffees not "really bad" for you
It's true that some people on this thread seem like they have no empathy
2
u/MomMom2111 3d ago
Just saying how it's given for free and the free stuff isn't "healthy" either, but some "luxuries" poors shouldn't be allowed. One cup is over 90 mg of caffeine. Most don't drink it black or stop at one. Has a lot of side effects. Pop can be unhealthy, too, and there's stuff that's ok. Got sick of reading the hate and false information. People should want to help others. Why should we have starving kids, ya know?

This is the same moral outrage people have with giving money to beggars. "I don't want them to use my money to buy drugs or alcohol." Like, my dude, once you've given it away, it is no longer your money.
Also, going cold turkey isn't necessarily the recommended way of getting over an addiction, but that's besides the point. We need to stop policing what people do just because they're more vulnerable than us.
3
4
u/ComradeJohnS 3d ago
there are better ways for your dollar to go further with helping poor people than giving it to someone on the corner.
but nobody really wants to look that up, and not everyone has money to be giving away sadly.

u/Alternative_Pay_6496 3d ago
Unpopular opinion but I dont give money to beggars because my job makes me want to jump in front of a truck.Â
4
u/Few_Palpitation3889 3d ago
If you know they're going to something dumb or destructive with it while you know you have bills to pay it's wasteful to give it away.
Same deal as with Israel.
4
u/WideHuckleberry1 3d ago
I don't have infinite money and I want to help people who will get the most value of the money I give to them. If I'm going to give up my money I'd rather it lead to a better long-term life than satiating an addiction for a couple hours.
And that's assuming that it was only luck that separates me from them and I have no moral claim on my money.

I dont give Tom money because I know one day, his drinking will kill him, and I find liquors mastery over tom heart breaking, and I won't support it.Â
Instead, tourists come to my town, and give him enough so he can keep killing himself.Â
If I knew somone was going to hit themselves with a hammer, I wouldnt give them one.Â
The moral outrage comes from watching folks hand out hammers as if they are kind souls.

u/Loose-Attitude-2237 3d ago
That's a dumb argument. "Once you've given it away, it's no longer your money, so you shouldn't care if people spend it on drugs". Okay, then why should I give them my money? What if I just, don't? Then at least I'll be certain that I'm not worsening this person's addiction. I agree that you shouldn't start banning what people can and can't buy with foodstamps, but that was a bad analogy.
4
u/wolfumar 3d ago
It's called manufactured rage. It's an intentional political maneuver used to convince the stupid to support their dismantling of all social support programs because someone might use the program in a manner in which the politicians don't like; as in using the programs at all.

The entire premise is class warfare on the poor. We need to be more morally outraged by billionaires than them turning us against each other. Soda is covered because it has nutrition facts, picking and choosing what people can use their stamps on makes it less accessible. What is really the problem is they can use it on a cold rotisserie, but not a hot rotisserie. Make it make sense.

I dunno about saying that's how they SHOULD be used, but if you are tight on cash one of the easiest ways to save money is to drink water, and unhealthy habits lead to more medical/dental bills, which this would also help with. Let people spend it how they are allowed, but also they shouldn't be throwing a fit at the people offering suggestions to help in their situation.

I don't care how unpopular my opinion is on Reddit: It's supplemental nutrition assistance program, not supplemental shit food assistance program.
As you said, unhealthy foods and habits are known contributors to poor health. Medicaid spent something like $13 billion dollars on insulin in 2017, and spends $43 billion overall treating conditions where poor diet plays a very significant role.
By allowing SNAP recipients to buy unhealthy shit, we're feeding into poor health and increasing overall Medicaid spending. Medicaid recipients also don't pay $0 out of pocket costs, so we're effectively taking money from their pockets too.
I'd be much happier if we required SNAP foods to hit certain nutritional guidelines.
I mean, eat the rich too and all that, but we really shouldn't be helping with people's bad eating habits.

u/ZeusThunder369 3d ago
To be fair, the group of people arguing against allowing buying of sugared soda with food stamps are a mix of people against corporate lobbying, and nutritionists. There aren't many conservatives in that group.
The concern is soda companies profiting off of poor people. And that sugared soda doesn't actually provide nutrition, so it shouldn't be part of a nutrition assistance program.
The typical pushback is "what about dignity!? Let people make their own decisions!" -- okay fine, then why not allow alcohol?
Also... it's REALLY stupid that you can buy a case of Pepsi with SNAP, but getting hot prepared foods like soup or a roasted chicken isn't allowed.

Plastic bags are so cheap, grocery stores switch to them. Well yes, but... are they really cheaper? I mean, they are harder to dispose of and cause environmental damage when not properly disposed of. Neither of those costs are part of the manufacturing. Plastic bags are only cheaper because the real cost is passed on.
We should tax plastic bags and use that money to clean up plastic bags. Then plastic bags might not be cheaper.
One could see the same argument for sodas. Tax foods that provide no nutritional benefit and are just for pleasure (which would include alcohol). Use those taxes only to offset the medical costs associated with the outcomes.
Sodas might not be that cheap anymore.
Either way, don't try to play it off that conservatives don't pile on to this issue as if they have some moral high ground and are shaming the poor. The right does it and has always done it.
I think the argument against getting prepared food is where do you draw the line. If you let someone buy a roasted chicken at the grocery store, do you let them buy a meal at Olive Garden? It is basically the same thing.
I think the best answer is UBI. At that point, it is your money, do whatever you want with it.

Billionaires should pay a wealth tax to the point they donât exist. That doesnât mean food stamps should be used to buy soda.

u/Game_Knight_DnD 3d ago
I live on SSI and SNAP. Money is fungible, if I am not spending SNAP money on soda and want soda I spend SSI money on soda. Still a money from the government.
But here me out I live in Texas, we can't spend SNAP benefits on soda and candy that is true now. What can I spend SNAP benefits on sweet tea, water flavor enhancers like mio and crystal lite, kool-aid, sugar, juice, tons of stuff that is bad for you and sweet. Gallons of southern sweet tea are probably worse for you than your average soda.
Candy, sure can't get candy. You know what you can buy, chocolate chips, marshmallows, cookie dough, the list goes on.
So the whole you can't use SNAP for soda and candy doesn't do any good at making poor people eat or drink healthier, it doesn't stop government benefits from other sources from being used on soda and candy.
What it does do, makes parents of young children not be able to buy a premade birthday cake, you can still get all the stuff to make one but can't have the store made ones. It stops you from buying a bag of candy for your child to share at school for events like Valentines Day. All it does is make being poor slightly more inconvenient, and I guess that was the point.

u/Legitimate_Staff487 3d ago
You know what happens to people who spend their SNAP benefits on soda and candy? They get soda and candy and maybe regret it when they're hungry and malnourished later.
They get the same amount of money as a hypothetical perfect SNAP recipient who spends it all on rice, beans, and vegetables and spends an entire Sunday day meal-prepping for the week. You aren't out a single extra cent because they misspent the money we give them to help keep them alive.
SNAP benefits aren't a loan owed to you personally, they're money we give people so everyone in our society can have a baseline of human dignity. Stop trying to rob your fellow adults of that.
1
u/5ForFighting72 3d ago
But candy and soda arenât going to keep them alive. This suggests they have other means of getting the items that keep them alive, so why are they also getting my tax dollars to buy candy and soda? Are those human rights now too?
→ More replies (1)1
u/Halation2600 3d ago
I mean it's not the healthiest way to do it, but candy and soda will absolutely keep you alive. Which is what SNAP is supposed to do - keep Americans alive. If you're against keeping Americans alive you can eff right off.
2
u/skripachka 3d ago
Part of working with food pantries is understanding that people need to retain some sense of dignity. They are already felling bad. Why do you need to punish people further by telling them they canât have any tiny amount of pleasure or convenience. This sentiment is degradation porn. The person wants to inflict their feeling of disgust on another. Guess what, that doesnât inspire one to keep participating in society. Give people some dignity and respect to make some choices.
2
u/jasongraziani 3d ago
Iâm not sure itâs my business what people spend their money on, however I can see an argument for soda clearly not being necessary or âfoodâ. As someone who has never understood the soda culture, Iâm probably not someone ya wanna hear from. đđđ

7
u/WhiteSnakeShinobi55 3d ago
I think both are probably bad. Foodstamps being used for junk food is a problem and leads to a lot of unhealthy children. I was an emaciated shell of a child living off of little Debbie and gas station food when we could have used our food stamps to buy real, and cheaper, foods.

It strains the cost of healthcare, health care begins at home by making better choices and exercising. But not in the US, everyone wants to be a fatass and then complain why treatment is so expensive when their habits finally catch up to them. Take care of yourselves and How bout not supplying your fatass kids endless amounts of sugar and carbs, get their fat asses moving. Those chunky chunks butterballs will be a strain on the system and probably not have much pride in themselves. Get them to focus on accomplishing goals and taking pride in themselves for what they've achieved. Pride in taking care of themselves, pride in being productive and positive influences.

People with this view infuriate me. I always ask them if people on social security should be able to buy soda with that money, and they always get stumped.
Food stamps, like social security, is a social safety net program. For food stamps, we've decided as a society that people who are making below a certain level of earnings deserve not to go hungry so we give them money to buy food. For social security, we've decided that people above a certain age shouldn't have to work, so we give them money to live (for housing, food, etc.). Both of these programs are the same in that they give government money to "needy" people.
It's inconsistent to think social security payments should be used to buy soda but food stamps shouldn't. You can think no government money should be used to buy soda - that's fine. But government-provided payments are just that, and government payments for food stamps are no different than government payments for social security.
2
u/1rishChicken 3d ago
Hard disagree. You pay into the Social Security program to receive Social Security benefits that amount to retirement. Retirement is doing whatever the hell makes you happy until you die. Buy ALL the soda you want. Welfare is reallocating the tax dollars from the people who are working and are able to fund the person who isn't working so they may be housed, clothed, and sheltered. A noble cause. But I can to being 18 in your parents house when you are on someone else's dime they are allowed input into how you live your life. If the taxpayers don't want to pay for the welfare so, there should be no welfare soda. social Security is not someone else's tax dollars
2
u/Live_Background_3455 3d ago
Should you be allowed to buy alcohol with food stamps? How about weed? How about guns? I can buy all of those and even illegal drugs with social security money. Should I be able to buy some cocaine with food stamps?
3
u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 3d ago
Google what SNAP stands for lmao
The two programs are for different purposes so obviously it makes complete sense that the money would have different rules
Saying "they're both social programs!" is a low IQ take
Your argument is like saying "a human and a fish are both animals so why do people only get angry when I fuck a fish??"
1
u/1835Texas 3d ago
This is a goofy view of it. Social security is a forced program where the govt takes your money and is supposed to invest it and then return it back to you with interest. So it is your own money being returned to you. How much you get was directly tied back to how much you put in.
Food stamps is other peoples money being used to buy you food.
Now, if youâve paid into the system for long then sure, it could be argued that itâs your money being returned to you, but many people live their entire lives on this stuff.
But letâs not even take them into account. Letâs just look at people who are on hard times. Iâm 100% fine with providing them nutritional food. But since it isnât their money being returned to them like social security, there has to be some limits on what can be purchased in order to ensure itâs money wisely spent.

A big part of the problem is not that they are drinking a soda. It's that if they aren't buying the cheapest canned good in the store to dump in the parking lot for crv money, then they are becoming larger, slower, less intelligent, less physically healthy, and require even more help and assistance with stuff like medical care later. One million sodas isn't a big deal. One million lethargic obeasts that require significant medical care is.

You can agree on both....
These two things aren't mutually exclusive.
Should food stamps only be for nutrient dense/healthy food, opposed to foods/beverages that are widely know to be lacking nutrition and linked to multiple preventable diseases?
Seems pretty reasonable.
Should the wealthy be able to exploit the tax system to further their own gains, while the other 99% of the country loses their wealth?
Also pretty straightforward.

u/Lordofthereef 3d ago
I think it's weirder that food stamps in many states can buy said soda but not a prepared meal. Here in MA I can buy a raw lobster with SNAP but not if they cook it (which is generally free service). Soda is, and always was, totally fine.

I donât give a shit what someone chooses to use their pitiful government allowance on, and fuck anyone who does. You donât give someone help so you can lord it over them and approve or reject what they chose to do with it. You give because there is a need and thatâs where it ends.
And if you donât want to give thatâs too bad. If you can give, you give. You shut up and pay what we say is owed anyway or you get exiled from the protection society provides and watch how quickly your fortune disappears when life knocks you down. Good luck growing your own food, manufacturing your own textiles, compounding your own medicines, fighting natural disasters, and weathering illness and injuries all alone. Itâs that simple.
Maybe one day weâll stop the injustice that causes people to be in need. Until then we should at least aim the frustration in the right direction: straight up the economic ladder at the bastards constantly trying to pull the ladder up behind themselves as they climb.

What poor people donât and never will understand, and understandably so, is that, the government loves giving rich people incentives on spending their money. They might get a tax write off/a tax break on one hand, but another hand, lots of taxes were paid, and when those expensive items were bought, built, and sold, lots of materials, change, hands with a lot of different companies and people and lots more taxes were paid, and lots of people had jobs. Thereâs still lots of positive to it, I know it is confusing, and I donât understand all of it either, but itâs a lot more complex than what this comment section seems to believe.

TBH, all these strings attached to SNAP just increase the cost of the program. Better just to let the recipients spend it on whatever they want. I donât think they should buy sugared soda either, but I donât want to waste more money having to police the checkout counter.

Wouldnât the intelligent plan be to change the tax laws that let them do this? Why do we criticize the people who take advantage of the tax laws? When how many people do the same thing just on a lower scale.
1
u/bunchout 3d ago
Because the people taking advantage of the tax laws are the same people contributing money to politicians for the purpose of them NOT changing thr tax laws.

I would appreciate if everybody could take this one brief moment in time to appreciate the clear and obvious observation of how generous Chris is with other peopleâs money.
Thanks for the advice, Chris, we had no idea how to spend our money until you chimed in.

Where can I get those $1 sodas? And, if people are SO concerned about what poor people are buying, give them free nutrition or cooking classes, but needing help shouldnt take away all fundamental personal freedom.

Food stamps should not be exploited to eat garbage and wealthy people should pay their taxes. See how easy that is?

Yeah, and what pisses me off is people wanted to argue with me when I told them that because, when food stamps made it to where people could no longer buy sodas and stuff with food stamps, and in some states, they won't even allow you to buy frozen, pre-made foods anymore, I told people that everyone getting mad about this because it's coming out of taxpayers' pockets is going to get pissed even more because food stamps are going to have to start giving people more food stamp money to compensate for the difference in cost because now they have to buy fresh veggies and healthy shit that costs more. And I was met with so much hostility, people telling me I didn't know what the fuck I was talking about. Clearly, I don't know how food stamps work. Guess what? Texas just recently raised the limit for food stamps to accommodate the cost of healthier foods. People wanted to argue with me, saying that's not how it fucking works. Well, guess what? That's what's fucking happening now. No one wants to listen to the guy who looks at the fucking big picture instead of just what's happening right in front of your face until it's too late, and the big picture is actually happening.

Sounds like someone should be lobbying their representatives rather than pissing and moaning on Reddit!

how about neither? neither one of these is a good option. people dont starve to death in the US. they die of "malnutrition related causes". ever heard of WIC? that should be the rules applied to food stamps. add fresh meat, and increase the amount a person can get and that is the way food stamps should work. i say this as person who has used both WIC and food stamps. and now makes a decent living.
tax everything that a person who makes over a million dollars does at 10-15%. income, personal property, property, thats a fair percent. there should be NO TAXES on anyone making less than 150,000 a year.

If poor people didn't buy soda, the WSJ would be writing pieces about how the poor are killing the soda industry.

The billionaires stole my money by price gouging fair and square. The government extorted me to pay for you.
That's the difference. Choice vs Force.

Gunther Eagleman doesn't believe anything, he's a mouth piece for Trump, if Trump told him to say the opposite tomorrow he would.

Spin this around and reframe it as "The government shouldn't be subsidizing the corn syrup industry with publicly funded SNAP money" and you could probably get an overall positive reaction on reddit.

I saw a lot of good arguments here, but Iâll add another simple one: the expense right-off, which is actually available to everybody, reduces their own tax bill. In the other hand, a foods tamp dollar is being taken directly from our pockets. Some people may say that without deductions for high earners the taxes would be lower to everybody. This is a fallacious argument: taxes almost always will only go up, never down. Did you ever hear a government official say; âhey, we already taxed so much this year! Letâs reduce itââŚ?
