You are so right! Keith Self a republican running in Texas said exactly this when asked he doesnt debate. He literally said something to the effect of "why should I, its MY seat...." like he owns it.
This is a really weak response based on the assumption that I think one party is allowed to claim ownership of an elected position for any group of people. Just in case it wasnt obvious, my position is that no politician is entitled to power either because they are the incumbent or of a party of my preference. The people choose who represents them and they deserve a fair and robust evaluation of all candidates they have to choose from
