u/Last-Appointment6577 1d ago
Why do I get the feeling that I'm JUST starting to realize that most of these fucks running for office are treating it no differently than a high school homecoming dance?

u/Hutchiaj01 1d ago
Because you finally started paying attention? No shade, I'm no better. But that's what my self revelation was
41
u/Last-Appointment6577 1d ago
well, here's the thing. I've been pretty aware of the state of things since 9/11 and up until age 35 (am 39 now) It was ALWAYS my running assumption that people just kept maturing as they got older...
Here I am all of about to be 40 just now fully coming to terms with the fact that some people never make it mentally past grade school and THAT is what is depressing for me.
12
u/Virtualguinea 1d ago
I have come to the same conclusion. Iām 45 and I have continued to learn and grow as I get older. It seems that the majority of our peers have not.
That is the only reason I can find for how a large amount of people still continue to scream their praise and admiration for the Republican candidates.

I think it is a period when they peak. They stop growing. There are people that are my age (almost 60) still wearing 1980s hair, and clothes. That was their peak, and they don't change. People that peaked in highschool on the football team and you still hear about in their 50s, who then try to live through their children, who obviously wanted to play football.
Some do it in the teens, some in college, some keep growing an evolving. I had many set opinions when I was young, and having kids made me evaluate my parents, and my opinions. Keep changing.
They have almost a sunken cost into their personality, they won't change, can't change. And they usually don't react well to being asked to change.
My family is MAGA. And the best they can do is "not vote". Not admit they are wrong, just sit it out to see how it comes out. Or so they are telling me. And they like to group up and attack my wife and I, and when we hit them with facts, it is "you can't prove that", you prove it, "that is not from a real news agency". They have their talking points, and you can go to parties and see them just parrot them. Over and over and over.
So yeah, they stop at some point and just "settle"? Same clothes, same beliefs, same everything.
3
u/WooeBetidee 22h ago
I could agree with the points of most of this, but not the clothes part...
I found a style I liked in my teens, I'm not gonna change what I like just because the fashion changes.
Better than people dissing something that's out of fashion and embracing it when it's suddenly 'hot'. That's not growing, that's confirming.

51
u/Turbulent-Prior-2253 1d ago
Right? It isn't like the issues are obscured here. A decent debate prep team will be able to predict 95% of the themes the questions will cover, and prep answer that can be tailored to whatever the specific question might be. That is the entire point of debate prep - anticipate, plan and practice.
The fact that Mary prepped better than Dan isn't some gotcha.

I came here to say exactly this.
In 2016, after the second Clinton-Trump debate, a co-worker literally said to me, "I don't like that she had an answer for everything."
I responded, "Isn't it good that she has experience, she's cared enough to prepare?"
"I didn't like it."
I stopped listening to talk radio by this stage but it was hugely influential back then. Looking back, I'm convinced Fox News or WOWO (Indiana AM radio) put this idea in my co-worker's head.

He's part of a party whose whole ideology is to prove governments don't do anything. Why would he prove his party wrong by having any accomplishments to speak of?
At best they do nothing, at worst they actively sabotage to stop things from getting done.
Then they can point to the resulting failure as evidence of government not doing anything to get re-elected by his
moronicwell educated and erudite voting base.15

This is the exact reason I donāt think I could ever vote for a Republican. Their whole agenda is to make the government look incompetent, so they can divest from it and lower taxes on the rich and deregulate markets as to make it easier to exploit us.
18
u/ForbiddenSirenz 16h ago
Itās basically that with every Republican lmao. None of them have any plans or ideas. Itās always just āIāll do whatever Trump whatās and fall in line.ā Literally nothing else. You can tell their āpolicyā is whatever trumps cooking up that day.
Itās the same here in Michigan. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is a heavy hitting beast whoās actually got plans and is coherent and a good dude who really loves this state lmao. Florida Mike Rodgers is a bum who used his time in past office to get rich, he fucked off to Florida and he comes back like every 4 years to try and run to gain more power. Heās a BUM!
He skipped out on the first debate and it was funnily awkward cause Abdul was just banging out answers and looking great and heās occasionally be look over at the empty
Podium next to him lmfao.Second debate when he actually showed up like I said earlier. He had nothing. Just āIāll do whatever Trump wants.ā
Dr. El-Sayed was prepared and was throwing haymakers over and over. God I canāt wait to vote for him again lmfao.
6
u/NYC-WhWmn-ov50 7h ago
I'm in NYC and I watched that first 'debate' (against air). I just thought, even if you thought you'd do badly, how did you think it wouldnt be so much worse to not show up at all? Did you really think they would just cancel it? The 'debate' was masterful but at the very least ot was going to end up an unopposed interview with free airtime for El-Sayed. You cant argue that it counts as an illegal campaign contribution of free advertising because you had the OPTION to show up, you just didnt. Rogers, or whoever advised him that it was a good idea to ditch, just made them look so much worse.
Just like Congressman Andy 'I dont know the law' Harris insulting his constituent for laughing at his stupid response and then threatening a student journalism for recording him in a public place WHILE OTHER PEOPLE WERE ALSO RECORDING HIM. Misquote the law about the government's role in free speech. When you ARE currently the government. Yikes.
I swear, you'd think they'd have to actively try to look that stupid. And yet...

I learned in high school government class that many people in this country (maybe elsewhere too) are shallow when it comes to voting. 5
u/FixerVictor 22h ago
Why do you think that's not democratic? If anything, ensuring people understand what they're voting for would be the more 'democratic' way to do it, as currently people are unwittingly allowing the rich and powerful to make decisions for them, anyway.

Ah! Then you'll love the American South! We had tests to cast your ballot, and they were sure-fire great.
Here's how it worked:
A white guy casting his ballot is asked to spell the word 'the'.
The back guy after him is asked to spell the word 'antidisestablishmentarianism'.
It was... not great.

Anyone who thinks this can be resolved by tech or that it wouldn't target the specific people it did before is just kicking the can down the road.
The entrenched powers will have equally as much control over any tech used as they had over the proctors delivering the test before, and it ultimately doesn't matter which group they decide to exclude as a bid to maintaining their control (but they absolutely will target the same people as last time, and a bunch of other people for different reasons but the same goal).
Anything that filters voting benefits the faction that is already voted in when filtering is implemented.Ā Whether or not that maps directly to a recognized political party has more to do with a given nation's media and propaganda sophistication than any actual power held by specific ideological adherents.

They may not lose though. Thucydides spoke of this (loyalty to party Is greater than anything...)
"Words had to change their ordinary meaning and to take that which was now given them. Reckless audacity came to be considered the courage of a loyal ally; prudent hesitation, specious cowardice; moderation was held to be a cloak for unmanliness; ability to see all sides of a question inaptness to act on any. Frantic violence, became the attribute of manliness; cautious plotting, a justifiable means of self-defence.
[5] The advocate of extreme measures was always trustworthy; his opponent a man to be suspected. To succeed in a plot was to have a shrewd head, to divine a plot a still shrewder; but to try to provide against having to do either was to break up your party and to be afraid of your adversaries. In fine, to forestall an intending criminal, or to suggest the idea of a crime where it was wanting, was equally commended,
[6] until even blood became a weaker tie than party, from the superior readiness of those united by the latter to dare everything without reserve; for such associations had not in view the blessings derivable from established institutions but were formed by ambition for their overthrow; and the confidence of their members in each other rested less on any religious sanction than upon complicity in crime.
[7] The fair proposals of an adversary were met with jealous precautions by the stronger of the two, and not with a generous confidence. Revenge also was held of more account than self-preservation. Oaths of reconciliation, being only proffered on either side to meet an immediate difficulty, only held good so long as no other weapon was at hand; but when opportunity offered, he who first ventured to seize it and to take his enemy off his guard, thought this perfidious vengeance sweeter than an open one, since, considerations of safety apart, success by treachery won him the palm of superior intelligence. Indeed it is generally the case that men are readier to call rogues clever than simpletons honest, and are as ashamed of being the second as they are proud of being the first.
[8] The cause of all these evils was the lust for power arising from greed and ambition; and from these passions proceeded the violence of parties once engaged in contention. The leaders in the cities, each provided with the fairest professions, on the one side with the cry of political equality of the people, on the other of a moderate aristocracy, sought prizes for themselves in those public interests which they pretended to cherish, and, recoiling from no means in their struggles for ascendancy, engaged in the direct excesses; in their acts of vengeance they went to even greater lengths, not stopping at what justice or the good of the state demanded, but making the party caprice of the moment their only standard, and invoking with equal readiness the condemnation of an unjust verdict or the authority of the strong arm to glut the animosities of the hour. Thus religion was in honor with neither party; but the use of fair phrases to arrive at guilty ends was in high reputation. Meanwhile the moderate part of the citizens perished between the two, either for not joining in the quarrel, or because envy would not suffer them to escape."- Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War chapter 3

I had exactly one experience like this, one of those greatest day of college moments. We had a hard mid-semester exam. Everyone is complaining about how hard it was the next class. One of those tests where I had no clue how well I did. Professor lightly berates the class for scores as he's handing them back, and says something like "I can tell one person gets it." He mentioned the distribution, I think it was something like one A, one B, everyone else Cs and below. People are getting their tests and rather loudly complaining about their grades.

Republican scum are deeply unserious clowns. Any hardworking person anywhere, yet alone in America, knows you dont just yolo jobs. A good plumber or construction worker doesn't show up to a job site with no tools or unprepared with no permits if needed. A lawyer doesn't come to court to represent their clients without spending some time reviewing the case most of the time, nevermind high profiles ones. A candidate for any decent competitive job is expected, at minimum, to do some kind of prep before waltzing into the door.

Bernie Sanders showed up in 2015 with a theory on wealth distribution while his opponents argued about if it was okay to form fascist police states or treat racial minorities different.
Majority participants in our democracy are clowns.

I have never been surprised by a question asked at a debate except when they are useless non-policy questions. Otherwise the questions are painfully predictable.Ā

It used to be standard for people to come prepared for a debate with facts to support their ideas.
Now one side shows up with facts and the other spouts nonsense and calls their own voters idiots.
Somehow Americans are torn on who to vote for.

Republicans are obsessed with Dems āgetting the questions in advanceā because they always demand to get them. Every accusation is a confession.

Conservatives lying, cheating, and stealing to win?
Must be a day ending in -y.
And I don't even know why they try to begin with. Their cult will still vote for them no matter what. Trump wasn't lying when he said he could shoot someone and MAGA would still vote for him. In fact, he did shoot someone, and they still voted for him. Because they actually believe some kid tried to assassinate him.

The better question is WHY WASNāT HE PREPARED?
Did he think heād just wing it?
Phone it in?
And he has the balls to insult her for doing what he should have done: PREPARED.
That just tells me he doesnāt give a shit about being senator, so maybe he needs to be fired by the people.

Being prepared in debates can mean having notes. A good debater needs facts and citations. Political debates less so than scholarly debate.
But you still need to prepare and have knowledge of what you are talking about.
Too many Republicans have none.
CF: the Maryland representative who got big mad at a woman in his audience for laughing at him and called a First Amendment violation.

It's it that hard to anticipate questions and write responses for the 10 or so most likely issues.

And to enough of the audience, heās pointing out sheās cheating and lying. His next fundraising letter will highlight that. And voters will support him.

The fact that you can say with certainty which party each person belongs to just based off this image is so telling.

Doesn't matter what the facts are, the fascist disinfo ecosystem will simply repeat the accusation as a proven fact.
They understand that just like 1930s Germany they don't need a majority - just enough of a fanatic base to seize power, which is well underway already.

GOP rule of thumb: my opponent prepared for the obvious questions we would likely be asked in this debate? THATS CHEATING!!

Fucking Sullivan, that last debate where he was shuffling papers and not paying attention the whole time, seemingly also trying to ruffle Peltola who was unflappable mind you, and egregiously and blatantly leaned forward to see which way she answered before flipping his paddle to the same was honestly so bad.
I didn't even catch this one, but I see he's still playing gd games. Please stop electing terrible people like Sullivan.

Okay, benefit of the doubt here...(not that they deserve it)
But any decent candidate manager would have a good idea of the most likely questions to be asked and would send them up there prepared for those questions.

It's been a decade of no-shows, rules lawyering, and bad faith on the debate stage for the GOP. To the point where they forgot how to actually do the damn thing.
