I was told there would be no fact checking. Remember when that was Trump's pushback on debates?

That was actually Vance.

How that alone wasn’t 1 of the 1000 tipping points just shows how low we’ve gone

14

u/negative_four 1d ago

Not only was it not a tipping point, MAGA was downright cheering it like it was a clap back

u/Mebejedi 23h ago

I remember a conservative Republican complaining about "Who fact-checks the fact-checkers!?"

u/playkateme 23h ago

The price of gasoline.

If republicans lose any seats this year it won’t be because of the reprehensible actions of this administration, it will be because a tank of gas costs over $100…

“They’re eating cats and dogs. I saw it on TV.”

Republicans have figured out the cheatcodes and trained their voter base. Just commit 1000 gaffes a day and flood the news cycle so everybody gets tired of hearing about it and/or assumes it's all blown out of proportion. Fox News will tell the masses the real truth! Everything else is fake news!

Ugh, whose ready for that race baiting sentient cabbage patch to talk more?

*ass cabbage patch

Fact checking the guy talking about fact checking.... he was told there would be no fact checking.

5

u/10gherts 1d ago

That should have disqualified the entire GOP. Like what the actual fuck, no facts?? They're in their own world man

Why? Those were the rules Vance and Walz had agreed to and what CBS said they would do:

CBS said the moderators — Norah O’Donnell, the anchor of “CBS Evening News,” and Margaret Brennan, who hosts “Face the Nation” — would primarily focus on encouraging exchanges between the candidates and enforcing the ground rules, rather than fact-checking.

...

“The goal of the debate is to facilitate a good debate between the candidates, and the moderators will give them the opportunity to fact-check each other in real time,” Ms. Milne said. CBS said it would remind viewers that the network’s approach to a debate was distinct from a one-on-one interview with a candidate, as on “Face the Nation.”

Brennan arguably broke those ground rules when she interjected to "clarify for [their] viewers" that many Haitians in Springfield had legal status. She did this after Walz had already responded to Vance (candidates were supposed to fact check each other, Walz had the opportunity), and then didn't give Vance a chance to respond.

These people don’t care about breaking agreed upon rules if it benefits them.

1

u/10gherts 23h ago

Media plays along with republican bullshit

1

u/partofthevoid 20h ago

Wait, is there a list of ground rules that said no fact checking? I think I need to see the moderators say they would not fact check under any circumstance before I buy that load of goods.

I seem to remember “perfect phone calls” from Trump and explanations that unless someone says quid pro quo, it isn’t a quid pro quo arrangement.

1

u/PreviousCurrentThing 19h ago

I quoted you New York Times summarizing CBS as saying:

moderators ... would primarily focus on encouraging exchanges between the candidates and enforcing the ground rules, rather than fact-checking.

I don't think an official list of rules was ever made public, but no one disputed this reporting. "under any circumstance" was probably not included, but it's hard for me to see why Brennan thought it was necessary after Walz had already had a chance to reply.

Well, sometimes as a moderator you have to make some calls. And let’s be clear what’s going on here: some republicans who have bent, broken, fought, and ignored rules and norms every step of the way are complaining that some unwritten and/or unpublished, but definitively unofficial rules aren’t being followed?  This guy, (couchfucker Vance)that complained about being fact checked, handwaved away being called out for a racist lie about Haitian immigrants eating peoples pets in America! Just”I think it’s a good story,” or some bullshit. No apology or admission of wrongdoing or correcting the record. He needs to be factchecked.

1

u/Penland_2008 20h ago

Because he told a racist lie about the immigration status of people Trump had just claimed were eating cats and dogs.

1

u/PreviousCurrentThing 19h ago

Here's the transcript of the debate. The relevant exchange is about a quarter of the way down, or you can search for Springfield.

Can you quote the "racist lie" he told?

2

u/Penland_2008 19h ago

I mean most of what he said was a flat out lie. Reading his answers on foreign policyare flat out lol worthy given how terribly the admin has handled that. But this is the part I referring to
“Now, Governor Walz brought up the community of Springfield, and he’s very worried about the things that I’ve said in Springfield. Look, in Springfield, Ohio and in communities all across this country, you’ve got schools that are overwhelmed, you’ve got hospitals that are overwhelmed, you have got housing that is totally unaffordable because we brought in millions of illegal immigrants to compete with Americans for scarce homes. The people that I’m most worried about in Springfield, Ohio, are the American citizens who have had their lives destroyed by Kamala Harris’s open border. It is a disgrace, Tim. And I actually think, I agree with you. I think you want to solve this problem, but I don’t think that Kamala Harris does.”

None of what he says is correct and it is xenophobic nonsense that has proven to be false. Remember this was said immediately after Trump accused the Springfield Haitian community of eating cats and dogs. An utterly nonsense lie with no evidence.

You’re really going to argue that debate moderators shouldn’t fact check the statements of the debaters?

1

u/Llama_of_the_bahamas 22h ago

Sullivan should’ve just done the Vance method of debating…

Which is to pretty much lie the entire time you’re up there.

5

u/Meakovic 1d ago

How dare you demand I pollute my perfectly rationalized answer with facts!

1

u/mooptastic 1d ago

and it worked bc the media is a complicit pile of shit industry? yes.

No complete bullshit lies should be called out on the spot bias or not. People already don’t watch the debates as is you think they’re gonna watch the post game analysis. Blatant lies should disqualify them but unfortunately for the GOP that’s their entire platform.

u/douchenozzle44 1d ago

My man was charmin soft with how quickly he deleted that comment.

3

u/Dry_Combination4070 1d ago

Seeing more and more of these soft people make a comment and bounce once called out.

6

u/pan-re 1d ago

Right? Why do you want to be lied to? Fuck voting for people anyway. Put up policies with no party affiliations and let people vote on that. This is all so far past sanity. Our dysfunctional country is destabilizing the whole world because a baby is President.

u/PreviousCurrentThing 23h ago

What blatant lie did Vance make that required a fact check from the moderators after Walz had already responded, in a debate with ground rules that moderators would not be fact-checking.

Here's the transcript. Can you quote the lie?

1

u/douchenozzle44 22h ago

You’re okay with being lied to? You really think the ground rules should be no fact checking? I’m not reading a debate transcript to prove that trump and Vance ran on bullshit hate against immigrants and trans people. You just ate it up like a good boy. If you don’t want to be fact checked it’s because you’re relying on the stupidity of the general population and want to get away with saying shit that isn’t true. If it wasn’t intentional the candidate can have some humility and accountability learn and grow. Unheard of I know.

1

u/PreviousCurrentThing 21h ago

You’re okay with being lied to?

I expect to be lied to by politicians regardless of whether it's being fact checked. You don't?

You really think the ground rules should be no fact checking?

It doesn't matter what I think, it matters that those are the rules that Vance, Walz, and CBS agreed to. Then CBS broke their rules.

You just ate it up like a good boy.

Nah, I'm perfectly capable of checking my own facts. I guess I didn't realize there were so many people like yourself who need to be spoonfed.

If you don’t want to be fact checked

Nothing Vance said required a fact check.

u/BrushedUnicorn 1d ago

Facts are facts, I’m sorry they don’t support your ideology

I prefer slight bias to blatant lies
