Why do I get the feeling that I'm JUST starting to realize that most of these fucks running for office are treating it no differently than a high school homecoming dance?
well, here's the thing. I've been pretty aware of the state of things since 9/11 and up until age 35 (am 39 now) It was ALWAYS my running assumption that people just kept maturing as they got older...
Here I am all of about to be 40 just now fully coming to terms with the fact that some people never make it mentally past grade school and THAT is what is depressing for me.
I have come to the same conclusion. I’m 45 and I have continued to learn and grow as I get older. It seems that the majority of our peers have not.
That is the only reason I can find for how a large amount of people still continue to scream their praise and admiration for the Republican candidates.
38-two-weeks-from-39 here. Hopefully not a /majority/ of our peers, they’re just loud and shameless, and amplified by enemies foreign and domestic. Hopefully. 🤞
37, I feel the same. Literally went over this same subject this evening with a group. People spanning from late 20s to late 50s with one woman there that is pressing 80. The fact that so much of what is happening is so full of cruelty just for money and power has had me in some of the most existential depression I've experienced.
I can't wrap my head around going to school and being taught history and being told explicitly we need to learn this so we can move forward and not repeat the mistakes of the past. But here we are.
Almost every day I get so sad that Carlin's last president was GWB and he missed the national optimism and joy that came when Obama got elected. But then I get so happy that he didn't make it to see what came next.
I think it is a period when they peak. They stop growing. There are people that are my age (almost 60) still wearing 1980s hair, and clothes. That was their peak, and they don't change. People that peaked in highschool on the football team and you still hear about in their 50s, who then try to live through their children, who obviously wanted to play football.
Some do it in the teens, some in college, some keep growing an evolving. I had many set opinions when I was young, and having kids made me evaluate my parents, and my opinions. Keep changing.
They have almost a sunken cost into their personality, they won't change, can't change. And they usually don't react well to being asked to change.
My family is MAGA. And the best they can do is "not vote". Not admit they are wrong, just sit it out to see how it comes out. Or so they are telling me. And they like to group up and attack my wife and I, and when we hit them with facts, it is "you can't prove that", you prove it, "that is not from a real news agency". They have their talking points, and you can go to parties and see them just parrot them. Over and over and over.
So yeah, they stop at some point and just "settle"? Same clothes, same beliefs, same everything.
Depends what you do with your time. If you want to know why people find maga so appealing: they just drink beer & watch TV. Their parents told them “republicans good, democrats bad” + it simply feels good to think we’re good. Peer pressure & feeling heroic, that’s literally how simple it is.

"I have a thorough idea of what sort of issues might come up and what my proposals for those issues are" "Well how the fuck is that fair?"
