It's literally the ideology.
a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing the importance of established hierarchies and institutions (such as religion, the family, and class structure), and preferring gradual development to abrupt change
If Americans want people to be "fed, housed, educated, and treated with dignity", they should consider promoting and voting for the opposing ideology, one that doesn't favor those on the upper echelons of social hierarchy over the majority of the American people.
a political philosophy and social reform movement focused on advancing the public good through government action and often calling for government to be used to meet popular social, political, economic, and environmental needs and demands and to advance rights and protections for marginalized groups

Just to play devil's advocate here.
Couldn't "hierarchies" be/become people educated, fed, and treated with dignity? Couldn't the institutions also be those that support it?
And couldnt "public good" be translated and interpreted in many different ways? Like, exterminating the Jews were to the Nazi's, a "public good" which meets popular social, political, and economic needs?
I just feel that we all need to be careful what these big words mean. They mean different things to different people, and naturally so.
Unless, ofc, someone thinks that they know the ultimate good.

You people have to realize itβs got nothing to do with politics. The system is not red or blue. The monetary system is a debt enslaving system. Ever since 1913 (the start of income tax) the government only gets paid when its citizens trade their time for money. And Itβs a Ponzi scheme. They tax you to pay for your grandparents because the taxes your grandparents paid the government already spent. They spend more money than they take in so they have to borrow money to pay social security, Medicare and other social services. And the more money the government borrows, the more expensive everything else gets. No politician wants to be the one to pull the plug and stop spending. So they keep borrowing and causing all prices to go up. So no matter what color your government is, nothing changes. Not until we go into the Great Depression or stop the ponzi. Or super intelligence finally wakes up and dramatically decreases the cost of goods and services.

Left or right this isnβt happening, if this was to happen it would have under Obama. Instead we got affordable care act that largely benefited insurance companies instead of the people Insurance companies charged the people on ACA more and the government used our tax dollars to cover the huge increases. You know why insurance companies charged more? Because OUR taxes paid for it. There was benefits for people with preexisting conditions and allowed children to be in parents insurance until 26 but ultimately It also didnβt help people who currently had insurance through their employer who could have benefited from this the most. It didnβt benefit the middle class and the poor already had Medicaid. ACA made insurance for many self employed or people who couldnβt afford their employer insurance even more of a problem. The Pros DIDNβT outweigh the cons and our health insurance premiums have never been higher especially for family insurance. We could have had healthcare protection without the Cons being attached.

u/bigblueboyqt 22h ago
The poor didn't "already have Medicaid." Before the ACA, most states didn't cover childless adults at any income. Employer plans also got no lifetime caps, free preventive care, and out-of-pocket maxes. And premiums were rising faster before the ACA than after.
Also, Republicans have spent years trying to kill it with dozens of House repeal votes, the 2017 repeal that failed by one vote, zeroing out the mandate penalty, and a lawsuit to strike down the whole law. Hard to judge it fairly when one party's been sabotaging it.

i am a conservative. i do think people should be helped when they need the help. i have been poor, my family has been on wic, while i worked 2 jobs (active military and pizza delivery).
WIC is very restrictive; it is my favorite of all the public assistance programs. you have to meet certain parameters to receive the assistance, and you are limited to what you can get. i dont hear very many people complain about WIC on either side of the isle. i think this model is how snap should be done. you cant get junk food on wic, you cant buy unnecessary crap on wic.
it serves a purpose and it is temporary, as most government assistance should be.

I dont want to see people suffer, but I believe in small government and that we need self accountability.
The more intervention by the government, the more unnecessary regulation or wasteful spending with high taxes the more rampant abuse by others.
The fact is people have had society for a long time and it tends to work out, the biggest problem we face now is if the government provides we see people become dependent on the government

You really shouldn't be opposed to high taxes; the problem is the burden of taxes is poorly/unfairly distributed among the population. If the top 0.1% were forced to pay the tax burden of the bottom 99.9%, they would easily retain their status of top 0.1% wealthiest. If the top 0.1% wealthiest people had to pay 100% of society's taxes, they would still on average have a net worth of $150m.
The more intervention by the government, the more unnecessary regulation or wasteful spending with high taxes the more rampant abuse by others.
Assuming the "rampant abuse" you mention is people exploiting food stamps or getting free life saving medical treatment, you should look to history and see how rampant abuse was in the era before "unnecessary regulation." There is a reason pure capitalists came to be known as "robber barons." The most rampant abuse today is the sheer amount of human exploitation required to create a billionaire class.
The fact is people have had society for a long time and it tends to work out, the biggest problem we face now is if the government provides we see people become dependent on the government
Generational wealth(billionaires/trillionaires/etc) is impossible without the stability provided by government. It is actually the wealthy who depend on the government to provide the stability for them to grow, retain and enjoy their wealth.

You completely disregard incentives for work and where that money actually comes from. Itβs not sitting around in a bank. Itβs being using by the companies they invest 99% of their money into.
Taking the money means starving these businesses of their investors in favor of giving that to the government in the hopes the government will do more with that money.
Many people donβt trust the government to spend money efficiently or safely.
In the government they care about being reelected, aka maintaining power. In a private business they care about making money.
So the question is, βDo you trust someone who wants power or someone who wants to make money?β
For me and many others, Iβd trust the person who wants to make money to make a more successful product.
Obviously there are exceptions, and the government DOES need to step in when the free market has perverse incentives to the goodwill of the people.
But saying βjust tax the rich moreβ is a telltale sign that you havenβt actually thought about where that money comes from and what areas in the private sector get screwed over.
2
u/CyanVince 18h ago
You completely disregard incentives for work and where that money actually comes from. Itβs not sitting around in a bank. Itβs being using by the companies they invest 99% of their money into.
These sound awful like the assumptions used to justify horse and sparrow economics; unfortunately we have decades of empirical evidence disproving the wishful "trickle down" thinking.
In the post WW2 period the top statutory marginal income tax rate for the highest earners was over 90%. Uncoincidentally the following decades were known as the "golden age of labor," society flourished and there was plenty of economic growth -- instead of the hypothetical perversion-of-incentives economic doomsday scenario you allude to. Businesses still thrived, except back then empires weren't being built at the expense of the middle class.
But saying βjust tax the rich moreβ is a telltale sign that you havenβt actually thought about where that money comes from and what areas in the private sector get screwed over.
If I have to actually defend the merits of hypothetically revising tax law such that society's wealth is redistributed in a way that reduces the wealth of billionaires to "mere" 100-millionaires, then I suspect no amount of reasoning or facts would be enough to convince you. One of my degrees is in economics so I have spent at least a few years casually thinking about this; unfortunately "just tax the rich more" is unequivocally an improvement over the present day reality. However this doesn't mean I endorse government waste; at a minimum I'd like to see the government work for the common man, as opposed to a government for the oligarchs.
A great example is how Elon Musk has derived much of his wealth from selling EVs to a captive market because the government protects his company from foreign competition. I can't think of a better example of "perverse incentives" than the world's first trillionaire who's wealth is built on a foundation of rent seeking behavior.

I guess Republicans feel they work hard and then people take away the fruits of their labor to help people that are just exploiting the system. They probably feel like slaves working for other people.
Democrats feel like, if they're going to work hard, they want to help people that are in need. I feel more this way, but I agree that we shouldn't just let everyone get a free ride on our backs.
The problem is that it's not really poor people in need that are taking the fruits of a Republican's labor. It's billionaires. I'm not sure why Republicans are against taxing them more. Youβre partially correct. Republicans (or at least this one) do feel like the state takes away the fruit of my labor to support people that are potentially exploiting the system. And, yes, I do feel like Iβm treated as a slave working for other people. USAID, SNAP and fraud reports across multiple states are indicative of just how corrupt the system is and how entitled those that live under this system are.
I do want to help people who are genuinely in need. Iβve been on both giving and receiving ends and know how both sides feel.
But charity is not the government taxing me and helping another. Where is charity here? Iβm not being charitable for paying my taxes; thatβs a force issue. The only thing I get for paying my taxes is being a law-abiding citizen. After all, I really have only two choices. I can pay my taxes or I can go to jail.
The state isnβt capable of being charitable. The state transforms my taxable labor into policy and political ideologies once it βgoes into the system.β The state defines who gets the money and how much they get.
The legislature passes a law. No charity here, just an attempt to gain the goodwill of a particular community or group. The executive branch enforces the law, a process mired in bureaucracy, politics and red tape; again no charity here. And the judiciary interprets the law, to be applied when someone feels they have been mistreated. IMHO the last place you should expect (or desire) to find charity is in the courts. Charity trumps justice and Justice that extends Charity cannot be Justice.
Thus the state creates a system to determine who is in need; one where an individual must apply and βproveβ their qualifications is the opposite of charity. To do otherwise would be inappropriate as the law requires a degree of integrity, to at least pretend that βfairnessβ exists.
No, charity is (1) a person with time, means or abilities that (2) recognizes another person or people in need of a portion of these capacities and (3) having empathy for the afflicted and (4) gives of themselves to provide a measure of relief.
Anyway, there is no βcharityβ through taxes or the state. The choice to be charitable was removed from me, literally stolen from me by the government (i.e., the taxed amount). I see no difference between a tax (or portion thereof) and handing that money to someone else versus a mugger βRobin Hoodβ pointing a knife or gun at me, taking my money out of my wallet and handing it out to their friends, family or neighbors.
βThis is too extreme!β you claim. Please, tell me how taxing Peter to give to Janice is any different? Peter is forced to give his own property to Janice via an intermediary. Itβs just that, in the governmentβs case, both Peter and Janice are additionally afflicted with an inordinate amount of paperwork.
The state is slightly more βcivilizedβ about its theft. This means that the state will send police to kick your door in, toss you into jail until you βpay your dues,β make you repair the damage they did to your door and the home they trashed. And, just to ensure you know you screwed the pooch, they add your name onto a list of felons; ensuring your life is forevermore f*cked.
The mugger might just kill you. The mugger is at least honest in what theyβre doing and why. Tax spending is at the whims of whomever is in power.
So, exactly why should we be taxing billionaires? This has been a collective complaint for centuries. You know who eventually gets shafted? The plain-Jane citizen, thatβs who.
And why? Because, lawyers like lots of money, and guess who has a _lot_ of money. Because, legislators also like lots of money. And, again, guess who has _lots_ of money. Did we not learn anything from Jeffrey Epstein? A billionaire has legal experts, business experts, banking experts, technology experts, financial analysts, official advisors from both parties, and vast research, institutes and colleges that all want the billionaireβs attention. You are at a disadvantage at every step.
The βtax the richβ mantra you hear from Bernie Sanders et al., was approved and passed muster with at least one billionaire. You think that the media is immune? Think again, just ask Google who owns the media company you listen to when you get your news.
Even NPR isnβt exclusive.
https://www.npr.org/people/g-s1-96612/john-buoymaster
John W. Buoymaster is the chair of the NPR Foundation. This guy is the managing director of Pathstone, a wealth management company with over 100 billion under management. Yeah, for βhigh-net-worth individuals.β You think he might have opinions on what gets broadcast by βNPR member stations?β He already has a position that ensures member stations will at least listen to his opinions.
Instead of taxing the billionaires, shift the focus onto restoring integrity in the government. Vote for legislators that will write laws ensuring that billionairesβ companies are rewarded for βmoving more money into employeesβ pockets.β More importantly, hold your legislator _responsible_!
Push your legislators to change the countryβs monetary policies and force an end to inflation. This one change will prevent the nation from picking the pockets of the least educated and most vulnerable of society.
Remove the enormously expensive legal mandates on medicine and return control of medical care to doctors. Discard the laws that protect pharmaceutical companies and health insurance companies when they make decisions like doctors and override the decisions made by a doctor who is face-to-face with the patient.
End income tax on citizens. This country did fine for 150 years without it.
Most of all, companies have more rights than citizens. This is the most egregious problem as I see it. If a pharmaceutical company kills hundreds of people, that company must pay the price in the same way a citizen would. Profits must be turned over to the estates. Make the βdeath penaltyβ a real thing for companies. The shareholders deserve to lose their investment if a company not only kills citizens but (1) covers it up or (2) continues its bad behavior.
Force the companyβs assets to be used as restitution for the companyβs crimes.
That would turn billionaires into moneyless losers if their companies are forced to sell their assets. Executives, officers, shareholders (and family) holding more than 10% of the company are not eligible to purchase any of the assets being sold and cannot obtain employment or be an owner or officer for any company in the same industry for the rest of their lives.

As a republican i can tell you thats its not taxing billionaires that we are against, itβs the fact that everytime a new tax is enacted, it always ends up affecting EVERYONE eventually. Just look at where we are now. From the boston tea party to paying taxes on what you make, buy and sell. A new tax is never just for a specific group, but it does start that way. The federal income tax was initially just a tax on the rich, now we all pay it.

Because increasing the tax rates do nothing. They have ways of circumventing any increase. What NEEDS to happen is getting rid of loopholes and ALSO a mass crusade against fraud.
It is insane how much disability fraud, food stamp fraud, and healthcare fraud is out there. You can find people talking about how much they scam the US government on social media because they know nobody is actually checking in on this stuff. Fake companies making tens of millions of dollars on healthcare scams.
People on disability working off the books on manual labor jobs.
People creating fake paperwork in order to be paid out thousands in food stamps on a monthly basis.
And everybody SHOULD be for cracking down on this because it hurts everybody else. From the others who actually deserve these benefits to the people who are forced to pay into them even though they know their money isnβt being used for anything good.

It's not about the taxing. It's about that it always finds a way to be put on the people other than the wealthy. When income tax was first established. It was only on the wealthy then it became everyone's responsibility. We know that any time a tax is created. It will eventually cover everyone. With the wealthy paying less than when it started. But my problem is that my taxes are given to every other country to help them and the people here are in need. We should take care of our home first. And a lot of that money finds it way back into politicians pockets.

The tax rate is high enough. The broken system allows them to avoid taxes. It also allows you to avoid taxes if you learn how. As a Latino Republican I will say this, most republicans donβt care about taxing the rich, so long as it doesnβt cause them to take their companies and jobs elsewhere where. We are more worried about how the money in which taxes go to is being spent. You have a lot of people that could be productive or more productive with no restrictions that take advantage of the system and blow the money away. Meanwhile you have people that really need it or deserve it struggle with nothing and the rest of us, working class both democrats and republicans, being taxes to the point we can fill our grocery cart and limiting our standard of living. Itβs not about being taxed more or less, itβs about where is the money going too.

60% of all federal budget goes to social programs. As a matter of fact, here is a breakdown of our budget by category. To me, it looks like we already spend a ton on helping people out.
Health Programs
~24%
Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, ACA subsidies
Social Security
~21%
Retirement, survivor, and disability benefits
National Defense
~13%
Military operations, equipment, and weapons research
Net Interest on Debt
~13% - 14%
Interest paid on outstanding national debt
Income Security
~7% - 10%
SNAP, SSI, EITC, unemployment, housing aid
Veterans & Retirees
~8%
Healthcare and pensions for veterans & federal retirees
Everything Else
~5% - 7%

Republicans want a civilization where anybody who wants it can have it. Democrats want a civilization where they take other people's money to pay for things they're unwilling to do themselves, so they can virtue signal on the internet while ignoring the fact that 99% of the money got embezzled and feel they are on the moral high ground while actually being the most hateful, racist people on the planet.

Yes there are and low & behold they are all some of the Happiest Citizens ever. Take Sweden , Denmark , & Norway for example all three have a Capitalist system of Government , but not like America which for most of the last Decade has been Vulger Capitalism / Oligarchy Regime equals a 80yr old Fascist who's billionaire buddies all around him want Trump to Declare Marshall Law , and take all the voting machines away - That's their plan to rig the election , but I know die hard MAGAS that are so sick of all his lying π€₯ and gaslighting the Right Wing Fascists aka the White Supremacists. That what's pissed them off the most are all his promises he made , he didn't keep one of them the way he told us a thousand times in 2024 how on Day 1 the Russia / Ukraine war would be over in his first day in office. His War with Iran has completely hurt the 99% of Americans , while enriching a handful of Billionaires who own the Defense contracts on making all our planes , fighter jets , tanks , interceptor missiles , tomahawk ballistic missiles , drones , and the 30 MOAB' S which range from 2,000 lbs of dynamite , 5,000 lbs of Dynamite , 10,000 lbs of Dynamite , and at least one or three 20,000 lbs that pretty much put a gigantic hole in the ground. Democrats passed the ACA and 17.5 million Americans are now receiving their redetermination letters to fill out and without meeting the Work requirements , all will get dropped. The ACA is still the LAW of the Nation , the Supreme Court Justices told Trump there hands are tied since Obama passed the bill by beating the R- Filibuster , and a super majority in the House to pass the ACA , therefore only CONGRESS can repeal the LAW βΌοΈβοΈππ½πΊπΈ

If you cannot articulate your opponents argument it means you take your own on faith.
These types of posts are like someone hearing the phrase "if you give a man a fish, you'll feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you'll feed him for a lifetime" and responding "So you just hate poor people"

And yet states not democrats have a major problem with these. I literally live here and the more socialist it gets the more homeles there is and more expensive things get.
You know those pics of the beautiful glamorous houses of LA? Those are gated communities for the rich. Otherwise youre poor or living paycheck to paycheck. Even here in SD where its less blue but still blue, its hard for the middle class to exist if you dont already have a house long before the recession.

Lol there are 2 things this post will prove 1st most people on reddit are going to be left leaning college "educated" people and 2nd starting needless fires on the internet will bring more engagement to a post then writing a thoughtful post with any actual substance to discuss. Also for those that haven't heard it today Jesus loves you and have a blessed day.

Many cases from just the last century of governments promising these things and then opting to kill millions- 10s of millions of its own people.
When you make the government powerful enough to take care of you, sometimes they just decide itβs easier and quicker just to βtake care of youβ.

Do you honestly think one βsideβ or the other wants what this meme promotes? When it comes to government, itβs about power (votes). Thatβs all they want. How about we try having people feed, house, educate and treat others with dignity rather than handing our power over to government to do what we should be doing for each other?

I learn from this admin that there's no actual human left in GOP party. All party members are incompetent, highly demanding, inhumane, criminal gang, claiming something they never done or never did.

This is why I left the democratic party. They only care about signaling some virtuous intent. They could care less about 2nd order impacts from distorting markets.

u/Local_City_8174 23h ago
Even Republicans support that. The difference is who pays for it and what is an acceptable standard. If we want to have a family of 4 on an 800 SF apartment building, we can do that, but you wonβt have nice cars, you wonβt get a $10 Starbucks coffee. To be honest, got look at Russia, China, India and Brazil and tell me if thatβs what you want.
