They’re terrified of things they don’t understand. Not only do they not understand what a trans person is, they actively avoid trying to understand because it makes them uncomfortable and shatters their fragile, hierarchical worldview.

The problem with this messaging is that it only works when things are good. People can get really crazy about cultural wars when the economy is doing well but people stop caring when they can't afford gas

More from their fear.
Conservatives are cowards afraid of anything different. So they tend to spiral and behave irrationally when the economy tanks.

Hence the wars, disregard of law, acceptance of corruption, etc etc
