Just some context: This shot is not that difficult when you’re accustomed to tracking a baseball going over 100mph off of a baseball bat or an outfielder springing at full speed.

THANK YOU! (Low 3rd, off the dug out camera person)

Yeah, I thought at first that this was an amateur with a cell phone or something. A pro sports camera op with a pro camera is basically just doing his job.

looks like its leg is hurt

This bird actually can’t take off from land and doesn’t usually walk. So not hurt necessarily but in a spot of trouble.

Why is it landing like that??

I think it’s something that’s not a goose but can’t remember what. They land like that in water but seems weird they would do that on land. Huh.

yes exactly it seems to have forgotten what kind of animal it is right in the middle of landing

That's a pied-billed grebe! Poor guy probably thought it was duck weed covered water.

Feel like we need a hockey or football commentator to be calling this landing with much more excitement.

Sports camera operators have been practicing on birds since at least the 1950s.
Festival camera operators, on the other hand, practice on flies.

Poor thing, that’s a rough landing and bird bones are not exactly the most robust out there. Would not be shocked if he fractured some bones on that landing

Isn’t that a cormorant?

u/tiexodus 21d ago
I’m thinking a grebe

Yeah the feet are a dead giveaway

Yep it's got Coot feet not duck feet. The bill is also pretty distinctly Grebe-y

I guess any landing you can walk away from is a good one.
