Mammals from a monophyletic standpoint are fish. There is no monophyletic clade that exists where a whale shark (Chondrichthyes fish/cartilaginous fish) and a tuna (Actinopterygii fish/bony fish) are fish but a blue whale (tetrapod) is not a fish.

If you look at the Wikipedia article for fish, you’ll see tetrapoda is traditionally excluded from being a fish, but cladistically tetrapods (including all mammals) are fish.

Basically you are considered to be part of the same group as any of your ancestors. You can start a new group, and all your descendants will be part of the new group, but you will never leave the old group.

There is an evolutionary chain between modern humans, and a creature a long time ago that lived in the ocean (a fish) and because of that ancestor, we are also fish, and we can never stop being fish.
