Feature Request How ironic
Thought of trying out proton mail to have less spam and now I have 12 messages just from them đ . Not really living up to the promise

Oh no, 4 emails in 60 days? How am I ever going to manage my inbox?

Gotta love when everything else is ignored to create a setup to complain.
2
u/SpeechEuphoric269 Nov 29 '25
Dog, every company sends promotional emails to their own users. You can disable it, and as others said, its 4 emails in 60 daysâŚ

lol @ calling Proton a corpo. their enterprise model is designed to prevent being taken over by corpos. Oh no, the big bad free private email/vpn company funded entirely by subscriptions and not venture capitalists is sending one message every two weeks during sale season.

I get dozens from various ads PER DAY.
The OP is severely out of touch.
3
u/forlorn_maiden Nov 30 '25
They have a large banner on every single one of their apps, which you have to dismiss individually and they repeatedly send you mail. ONE email is enough 2 emails about the same sale is just spam.
6
u/PA-01 Nov 30 '25
If you are a paying customer, you can turn all in-app communication and promotional emails off. If youâre not, expect advertising. Nothing in this world is free.
-1
u/forlorn_maiden Nov 30 '25
As a paying customer I do not want to see TEN different ads for their sale, I don't even want to see ONE. Stop defending this, you just look like a freak.

You can turn these off in the web app though? Pretty simple!

u/blackbird2150 Nov 29 '25
Since you sign up for them, none of them are spam. Also 1-2 a month is easily under a normal person definition of âlessâ.

u/Much-Artichoke-476 macOS | Android Nov 29 '25
Hardly as it looks like it's over the course of a couple of months....
If you are a paid user you can disable all promo emails, not sure about the free tier.
-109
u/DrPinguin98 Nov 29 '25
Proton could simply send advertisements that are actually interesting for the respective customer, rather than just everything...
29
u/Much-Artichoke-476 macOS | Android Nov 29 '25
They look pretty relevant, I assume the user is free or mail plus and the adverts are for the unlimited plan / sales events.
Seems pretty relevant that if they like and use the service there is a chance they make like the other services...
22
u/GKMp8DJqMy Nov 29 '25
You can set that up at account level so you only get offers you're interested in.
Some people really don't deserve Proton.
-40
u/DrPinguin98 Nov 29 '25
I can't find anywhere in the settings to specify that I only want to receive advertising offers that are relevant to me. I can only turn it on or off. It also says that there will be one email per quarter for offers and special promotions, but it's more like once a week...
But you're right, people like you simply don't deserve Proton, especially when you say that to others...

This sub is too much toxic nowadays.
51
u/Phrasophe macOS | iOS Nov 29 '25
Absolutely, nothing but silly complaints.
3
u/johnvogel Nov 29 '25
I was genuinely already wondering if that was some sort of adversarial campaign or something like that.
52
u/GKMp8DJqMy Nov 29 '25
That's not spam. You can also set it up so you only get offers you're interested in anyway.
0
u/Corvoco Nov 29 '25
Getting unrequested emails is the definition of spam.
4
u/smashed2bitz Nov 30 '25
Unsolicited emails are spam.
These are matketing communications from a service provider OP is using.
That is the literal definition of email. Not spam.
0
u/forlorn_maiden Nov 30 '25
You can say that about EVERYTHING, "oh you used your email to make an account? well that's a service you're using and those emails are just communicating a marketing event for the service you use"
0
u/smashed2bitz Nov 30 '25
Yes.
That is exactly how it is supposed to be.
Spam is from someone you never had any connection with. You didnt give them your email to be used for any reason.
That's what unsolicted means, my dear maiden.

For me the mails from Proton are actually really helpful. I get notified for new features or new apps they release. If they didn't send me these advertisements for sales I would've have never gotten my subscription this cheap. And you can turn them off in the settings. I'm not 100% sure if free tier can do it too, but I think they can too.

Tbh I love that they send the mails so I can save money
2
u/Loqh9 Nov 29 '25
Same I mean if you use the product for years and years why would you not want an email telling you you can get it cheaper, just once. It's far better than an ad placement on the page or not telling you at all. I did save money twice thanks to that
5
u/j0zeft Linux | macOS | iOS Nov 29 '25
I mean⌠sure, you might have expected that you get NOTHING! Thatâs fair, but usually whenever I get a newsletter or an ad that I wasnât expecting I just go ahead and unsubscribe itâs at the bottom of every one of their promotional emails!
3
u/ExistentialTowel Nov 30 '25
I feel like if youâre not paying for the product, you canât complain when they ask you to.

7
u/FavorableMadness Nov 29 '25
If marketing emails are the make or break for you on promise keeping the world must be very dark for you.
ProtonMail is great, come on over if you have found your reason.
5
u/Kandleman071986 Nov 29 '25
What is crazy is this can be switched off in the settings lol stop complaining, just turn it off.
3
u/Jobah_20 Nov 29 '25
Literally all VPN's do this, it's black week. Don't you want to know when there's a better deal? I get black week mails from Surfshark, Proton and Malwarebytes (I have over 10 accounts from different companies because I wanted to try every popular vpn) i dont know why the others don't promote black week sale maybe they aren't generous enough but im grateful that some vpn companies are.

You can explicitly set which emails you want to receive from Proton. It's probably set to enabled on most of them.
2
3
u/Personal_Ad9690 Nov 29 '25
Whatâs worse is that when I send someone an encrypted email or a drive email, they get pop up ads from proton
2
u/Curious_Fail_3723 Nov 30 '25
Fragile. You're their customer. They want to keep you in their ecosystem. So yes they'll market to you. The amount of Redditors that are confused over how marketing and business works is astounding.
2
2
u/ElectricalWay9651 Nov 30 '25
Aside from the whole thing of this isn't actually many emails, for the people who do pay for it, they get far less advertising. Proton is a free service that LOSES MONEY from you using it. Unlike Gmail where they make money by selling your private data, proton loses money from free accounts and earns money from premium users. This is my personal opinion but I think its perfectly valid for them to want to earn money from you instead of losing money
2
u/giomjava Linux | Android Dec 01 '25
If you think this is spam, you're severely out of touch.
I get DOZENS emails A DAY from various crap advertisement etc.
These Proton messages are MONTHS apart. You're just rage bating.
5
u/West_Possible_7969 Linux | macOS | iOS Nov 29 '25
Opt in & opt out settings have unfortunately become the way that enable all companies to behave the same while blaming the user. Who can forget the full screen aggressive proton ads on all apps and web apps to paying users while they dragged Google for their in app notifications to upgrade on Twitter lol.
6
u/KeesKachel88 Nov 29 '25
The worst part is that they only have discounts on introducing new members, like the duo package. Zero discounts on another year for existing subscribers.
4
u/HonestVirus5410 Linux | iOS Nov 29 '25
Bro I dont even complain, I use it for free and thatâs just a reminder of the sale
5
u/Prus1s Nov 29 '25
How is that spam?! Itâs over the course of several months đ that ainât much
2
u/NoWarning789 Nov 29 '25
Receiving spam doesn't reduce your privacy.
And it's very easy to charge this in settings.
3
5
u/SimpleAnecdote Nov 29 '25
Allow me to paraphrase the OP: "[I want a free service, that respects my privacy, with comparable features to a service offered by a multi-billion dollars company that has made its money by offering free services and selling my data. And I will complain if this new service allows me to opt out of its own mild sales emails (actual discounts mind you) but it wasn't opt-in. angry pouting face]"
And we wonder why these monopolies are so hard to break... The alternative must be more perfect than perfect, adjust to each user intuitively, and not cost anything, money or predatory practices, or slight inconvenience. Just free infrastructure and actively developed products sans taxes.
Side note: OP should check the meaning of irony. I think his post itself fits the definition, but not in the way they meant it.

Just disable it from the settings They literally also tell you how many emails in a certain amount of time they'll send
2
u/SaniaXazel Nov 29 '25
You can change it in the settings, and this is over the course of months.
Besides, how do you want Proton to make money needed to continue what they are doing? You have yo cut corners somewhere, and this doesnt even harm you in any way

uff this feels like low tier hate against proton.
If you don't like it move on switch to tuta mail or any other.
Is it so hard to check if you can opt out from these mails?

Bei mir von allen mÜglichen Websites Emails bekommen das ich mich angeblich registriert hätte in paar Minuten voll Spam.bomb

u/NT1970 Nov 30 '25
Well thatâs what you get for free mail. If you have the paid version like me, you get none of that.
1
u/Reasonable-Site2719 Dec 02 '25
Wouldn't be reddit if somebody didn't say somethin snarky about getting what you paid for. Like
"Firstly, It's not even mehmehneh mamanama namma namani. AND B. did you seriouslyusly think...."

But they are all promotions and newsletters and you can just turn off in the settings

First messages are introductory, and the 3-day mail was literally about how you can get more storage for free.

Itâs spam if they donât fucking fix their apps so they fucking work instead of making excuses & offering discount sales. Also TBF they really screwed up the interface on the last android update it has no customization, while people canât auto backup from Linux, which is shameful for 2020 standards, leaving their visionary users hanging. So to wonder why there is always a sale on their platform or suite? Itâs marketing promotion, but once you see the shitshow behind the curtain when you want workflow like office or gsuite & the answer is in the sake of security, come the fuck on, & come up with a better answer, because that lame fucking excuse is getting old, & why itâs getting old, proton wallet, thatâs why

u/Resident-Variation21 Nov 29 '25
This right here is one of the 3 reasons I wonât switch to proton mail. I expect 0 ads in my inbox from the company Iâm paying.
I donât care that itâs âonly a small amount over monthsâ, itâs not 0. It needs to be 0.
7
u/eddieb24me Nov 29 '25
Then simply turn off these notices in settings and it WILL be zero. Why is that such a burden for some people??
-10
u/Resident-Variation21 Nov 29 '25
Why on earth do I have to manually turn off a feature that should be off by default? Thatâs a BS answer and you know it.
5
u/daknls2006 Nov 29 '25
You give off "old man yelling at clouds" vibes bud. Every company wants to make money. For the amount of ad emails they send, which is VERY VERY minimal, it's not a big deal. You know how easy it is to deal with it? Delete it before opening it, or turn it off in settings. Stop complaining just for the sake of complaining.
-3
u/Resident-Variation21 Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25
every company wants to make money
And if they want my money, they need to stop with the BS
itâs not a big deal
You donât get to decide what I classify as a big deal.
Also even small deals matter when the competition is so good.
Until this is off by default and permanently, I will NOT be spending any money on proton. Period. End of discussion.
Edit: and they blocked me because they know Iâm right and have no argument against it. Typical.
4
u/daknls2006 Nov 29 '25
Old man yelling at clouds intensifies
Telling a company to stop advertising in order to earn your money is certainly....a take. Not a very intelligent one, but certainly a take.
If you hate Proton so much, why tf are you even here?!
5
u/eddieb24me Nov 29 '25
Not a BS answer at all. It takes maybe 20 seconds to turn it off and done - you move on with your life. Youâve taken 5x that to go on this subreddit to complain about it.Â

You can change this in the setting to not receiving any email from proton other than account security
