Solved How to enable wireless Android Auto support with Proton VPN
Open the Proton VPN app.
Tap "Settings" at the bottom right of your screen.
Under Features, tap on "Split tunneling".
Tap the toggle to enable Split tunneling.
Tap "Mode" and set it to "Exclude".
Tap "Excluded apps" and scroll to the very very bottom of the list.
Tap "Show system apps".
Scroll down a bit more till you see "Android Auto" and tap its "+" mark.
Tap "Save" at the top right of your screen.
Back out till you're back to the Settings tab.
Under Connection, tap "Advanced Settings".
Tap "LAN connections".
Tap the LAN connections toggle to on, if it is off.
Tap "Allow direct device connections" to on.
For good measure, go back to the "Home" tab on the bottom right of your screen and disconnect/reconnect your VPN connection.
I know that's 15 steps, but I seriously simplified the whole thing. I could have easily shortened it to half of the amount of steps for those that know the basics of navigating menus, but I wanted it to be easy enough for anyone to follow.
I decided to write this up and post this because when doing a Google search all of the top results are for much older versions of the Proton VPN app or for other VPN providers altogether. I was already familiar with how to do this since I used to use Nord VPN and the setup is pretty similar, but I figured why not share.
Bonus points: If you use a AAWireless dongle, be sure to add the AAWireless app to the exclusion list as well.

I don't have issues with my VPN disconnecting/turning off, but I understand some people want the peace of mind. I've been told wireless AA doesn't work with the killswitch enabled, but haven't bothered trying.

Even though I personally don't need this, I just wanted to say thank you for writing this out in easy steps for the people who do and will need it. It's much appreciated.
