I understand this is rage bait, but as someone who makes and sells sourdough bread, charging $60 for a loaf is highway robbery. Bread is a basic staple. The ingredients cost very little, and while the time and effort deserve fair compensation, that price is ridiculous.

27 pound bag of flour, a bucket filled with water, the yeast mix pitched into the water, and a measuring cup filled with oil. All in the massive dough mixer with a boat propeller of dough hook.
Taken out and slammed on the stainless steel table. Cut up, placed 10 to a sheet, and left it the walk in till the next day. Rolled both ways through the dough roller and tossed into a pan with corn meal.

u/Any-Reference-2016 8d ago
Depends on the type of bread. Oil, sugar, egg yolk, etc. A true sourdough would need a starter instead of dried yeast. Lots of places make "fake" dark rye by just adding food coloring to regular rye. Just a couple of examples.

I heard that they try to justify the cost because apparently their starter is over 20 years old. I guess they want people to pay for the starter's university tuition or something.
13
u/smoothiefruit 8d ago
after 20 yeara of baking with a starter, you're using flour from the past week or two. thats the same amount of time it takes to develop a new one. hate this as a selling point.

Thatās the thing, what something is worth is what someone is willing to pay for it. Me personally I would never ever pay $60 bucks for this loaf of bread even if it was made with gold leaf flakes, but some people would, and people would pay even more for the stupidest shit out there. I promise you that someone could start a bakery, and sell these loaves for 120 bucks and people would still buy them. A lot of people are fucking stupid, and at the end of the day, itās not your money.

Yes! I was so confused. The overall sentiment holds up $60 for a loaf of bread is insane, and you can buy a TON of staple foods for $60 but anything he said about the bread itself was nonsensical.
The things he kept saying were in direct conflict. "It's mad hard" followed immediately by "It's like a pillow" had me scratching my head.
"It doesn't break!" Yeah, bro I'd consider that a positive trait of a loaf of bread.

He was mad before he went in. It was always his intent to be mad. To make this exact video regardless of whether he like it or not.
Is it worth it? That's subjective. What is a person willing to pay. The market decides, you are entirely free to NOT buy the bread and just get bread anywhere else.
Go get a $5 sourdough somewhere else (I guess all that would happen is this guy would be less mad)
He bought it, his choice, he didn't have to..rage bait for rage baits sake. He could be raging about any product that markets itself as speciality or boutique/experience based(iPhones, designer clothes, designer bags, designer shoes etc....etc....)
We all know quality is not the point of those products. Exclusivity is, being able to pay for it, above others is part of the experience.
9
u/somehugefrigginguy 8d ago
I almost completely agree with you. Actually, I do agree in this scenario. But I think it's a big problem when all businesses move to this type of a model, only providing products or services that the wealthy can afford.
My parents have friends whose families have lived in Vail Colorado for generations. Both teachers. But wealthy people flooded the area, then wealthy businesses followed and bought out all of the reasonable businesses. Now people who have lived there for generations can no longer afford to live there. It's not just about housing prices, grocery stores, restaurants, everything has increased in price so much that regular people are being priced out of their hometowns.
So this video seems to be stupid rage bait, but I also think it demonstrates a real problem.

Its not a scam. A scam involves taking a person's money and not delivering what was paid for. In more poetic language you could argue that certain necessities that are priced well above the cost of producing the good or service due to lack of market forces bringing the price down is a scam.
This is a classic case of more money than sense, but the product being delivered appears to be the product being paid for. You bought a loaf of sourdough bread well above market price. No coercion, no deception, nothing.
