Has anyone taken an 8-unit research course (BIOX7008) during UQ Summer Semester?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently in my second semester of a Masters program at UQ, and I'm planning to take BIOX7008 (Major Research Project & Seminar), which is an 8-unit course, during Summer Semester 2026.

The course is officially listed as being offered during summer, and I've already secured a research project and obtained the required signatures from my supervisor and examiner.

However, I noticed that:

  1. UQ normally allows a maximum of 6 units during the Summer Semester, and special approval is required to exceed this.
  2. BIOX7008 is listed on the official UQ course website for Summer 2026, but it's missing from the SCMB Student Hub application dropdown.

I've already emailed SCMB and the Faculty of Science regarding this, but I'm waiting for their responses.

Has anyone here previously completed BIOX7008 or another 8-unit research course during summer?

If so, did you need special approval from the Associate Dean (Academic)? Was it difficult to get approved?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar. Thanks!

Complementary studies units for a Communication student?

Hey guys, it’s me again. As a Communication student coming to her 2nd year, I’m a bit lost when choosing complementary units.

As said, I’m studying Communication, majoring in Promotional Communication (which is Comms with some Design units). I enjoy Design and was thinking of doing Game Design as my second major. However, I’m a bit concerned about my skills in coding (I have no experience in this) and my future career.

So what would you recommend I should choose for my 2nd major or complementary studies?

QUT You

Does anybody actually attend the lectures and tutorials for QUT You subjects?? They massively interfere with my work schedule so I'm hoping that I can just not attend them... thoughts? Can I still pass those subjects without attendance?

IGB180 unit delivery

While the unit is listed as internal, the “learning approaches” section says that there is participation in online interactive lectures, with workshops “some” weeks. I was wondering if anyone who’s taken this unit recently can let me know whether the lectures are delivered online or in person, and how often the workshops are? Wondering how much I can do from home

thanks in advance!

ITD201 and ITD 104

Hey can someone help me out with what's actually in these units?
ITD201 mentions altering pre-existing JavaScript code, I have some experience with JavaScript but I'm curious of the level of knowledge needed for the assessment.

ITD104 mentions a "simple, industrial-level programming language" - my assumption is that it's Python. Could someone confirm this for me?

ITD103 says it uses a prototyping platform - is this Figma?

Thanks!

Game design as a second major?

Hey guys, I’m finishing my 1st year at QUT in Bachelor of Communication. I want to pursue Game Design as my second major and have some questions:

  1. For someone who knows nothing about coding, how challenging would it be for me to learn about Game Design?
  2. Is there any workshops to take for building up my coding skills?
  3. For those who had studied in this major, what are your tips and reviews?

Thanks a lot for reading! Have a great day!

Help a poor soul out in the trenches 😭

So I’m an international student and I’m looking into doing a bachelor of engineering my options are between UQ and QUT, QUT offers a 25% schol to me whereas UQ wants me to get Edexcel to send the CSPR to them so they can verify it, then only they’ll inform me if I am getting a scholarship of any sort.

I’m looking into mechanical engineering but people are saying not to cause not a lot of demand in the market.

Please let me know a good path to follow.

Much love.

Anyone willing to share a Z9-120 booking?

Currently trying to book z9-120 ( my fault I’m doing this so late notice), but was wondering if there’s any chance anyone already has this room booked, and would possibly be willing to let me join to do a quick lighting installation / demo?

BS11 discontinuation as Feb 2027 Admit

Hi all,
I am a Feb 2027 international student admit for the BS11 (Masters of Business (Management)) program also on IMS. However, this masters degree was recently made a discontinued course a few weeks ago after replacing all the BS11 courses with BS12 (the new Masters of Business (Management, Analytics, and Innovation)). I have reached out to HiQ but they were unsure how to proceed, and afterwards I reached out to the Faculty of Business and Law who told me to sit tight and wait until January to push the issue further. This advice makes sense since I applied and accepted my offer so early (in July 2026), but I am anxious since I just recently moved to Australia and my visa depends on my degree. Has anyone had their course discontinued prior to commencing studies, and if so, how did the university transfer you to a similar/replacement program? Is anyone else now transferring to the BS12 program after this change? I am so excited to do my MBm at QUT, but I just want to know if there is further action I should take!

Anyone else have a meeting for LLB107 regarding academic integrity and ai generated content / ai assistance?

What are you preparing? How do you think it's going to go?

Also once you've completed yours or if anyone has done one before could you give any information about the procedure / how it went / tips? Has anyone defended themselves successfully?

Thanks gang

Joining Master of Architecture from July

I recently graduated Bachelor of Architecture in QUT and I want to join Master’s next year July.

For those who joined Master’s program as a July entry, did you experience any inconveniences with the study sequence compared to students who started in February?

I’m just a bit worried since my friend who joined Bachelor of Architecture from July had to take Architectural Design 2 before Design 1, and Design 4 before Design 3, and so on, because each design unit was only offered once a year.
It was hard for her because design units were supposed to build on the skills and knowledge gained in previous units.

For those who started the Master’s in July, did you encounter any similar issues? Are there any units that require knowledge or skills from units taught in previous semesters, which might make the July intake more challenging?

Thanks in advance!

Computer TV things buzzing in KG E152?

Is it just me, or are those tv/computer thingies at each of the tables kinda loud?

I have ADHD, and I am probably one to notice these things more than the average person, but is there a way of silencing them?

Aerospace or Mechatronics

So basically I’ve already gotten an offer for the BEng/BMath, but I don’t know what to major in?

I’m not worried about how difficult it is, but rather how fun. I know I should pick whatever seems more interesting but it’s such a tie that idk what I would pick over the other. Please help me decide, even if it comes down to what companies the WIL is done with.
