Question How cooked am i ?

So today I disassembled my rog ally to clean all the dust inside, but i accidentaly destroyed one of the fan, do you think i could play with one fan only ?

You can get replacement fans in Aliexpress. Also how the heck did you break all the fan blades?

34

u/1dot21gigaflops Jun 23 '26

Hopefully not blasting air and spinning the blades

46

u/3720-to-1 Jun 23 '26

It was 100% blasting it with air and spinning the blades

50

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

You may be right 🫣 i know thats stupid but i wanted to make it spin as fast as I could but it then exploded and blades was everywhere, I ordered a new fan on ali express

49

u/HUZInator Jun 23 '26

Look who wouldn't want to see how fast they could go. Just be careful, I don't know if this can actually happen but a spinning motor becomes a generator. You could generate a voltage and fry your whole board if you aren't careful!

16

u/tacticalTechnician Jun 23 '26

Basically every fans and motherboards made in the last 20 years have protection against that, I really wouldn't worry.

1

u/Sufficient-Kale-1193 Jun 25 '26

Ah, don't worry. I can give you a quick rundown on electro-magnetism. When you take something like a whole wire coiled in circles, and a ferromagnetic item in the middle is present, the current can be what will push or pull the ferromagnetic item which is Iron, or a straight magnet. Speakers run on the same basic principle. Now, a motor has a bundle of copper wire, ferromagnetic material, and a bunch of small magnets. A fan is attached to the motor and when you spin the shaft that has magnets on it, the copper can vibrate from the magnetism and send a small current out, alternating. An amazing example is a Hydro-electric generator which utilizes Electro-magnetic properties and fluid force. And like that, the Car Alternator runs on the same principle, only it uses the Engine's mechanical force instead. So, a fan is no different than a motor, in short. Hope that clears things up!

they won't understand this. good explanation though.

1

u/HUZInator Jun 26 '26

I am an electrician, I understand it. I meant like don't know if if voltage can damage the board because not sure if there were protections for it

-3

u/StruwwelpetersRache Jun 23 '26

> I don't know if this can actually happen but a spinning motor becomes a generator. You could generate a voltage and fry your whole board

not can. will. i'm sure the electronics are toast. 😄

2

u/Bruh02954958 ROG Ally X Jun 24 '26

This absolutely could happen

2

u/HUZInator Jun 24 '26

Some boards have protections against this

1

u/StruwwelpetersRache Jun 26 '26

try it

1

u/HUZInator Jun 26 '26

Idk which ones do though! I think best practice is not to tempt fate!

-11

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

Its not turning on anymore, it just shows the rog logo but then it turns off. Maybe I broke more than just a fan 😔

8

u/thirdeyeblue Jun 23 '26

When you blow the fan like that, it back feeds power back to the board and can blow capacitors and the like. You probably bricked 'er.

2

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

Is there a way to check this directly inside ?

4

u/The_ASStronaut_ Jun 23 '26

Wait till the fan gets there. Don't turn it on until you've swapped out the fan properly. If you need to take it somewhere to install the new fan, do that. Until then you won't know, because it's not wise to turn it on without cooling. You could easily make your situation worse.

2

u/system_error_02 Jun 23 '26

It does not backfeed power. This hasn't been an issue for over 20 years in electronics. They all have voltage protection now. Its more likely that its not cooling at all now so is instsntly overheating or has a failsafe that's being tripped.

1

u/StruwwelpetersRache Jun 23 '26

nice myth. it's wrong though. at least google for a second.

3

u/WeakAd569 Jun 23 '26

"at least use google for a second"

I did what you said

"Modern motherboard fan headers are designed with protection circuits, specifically flyback diodes to handle voltage spikes and prevent reverse current from flowing back into sensitive components."

"To generate enough power to overcome these protection circuits and damage the power regulation hardware on your motherboard, you would need to spin the fan at an extremely high RPM, much faster than a can of compressed air can achieve."

"The force of compressed air can snap off fan blades, especially if they have become brittle over time due to heat exposure within the case."

"Compressed air can force a fan to spin at speeds significantly higher than it was designed to handle. This can cause the lubricant inside the bearings to overheat or the bearings to disintegrate, permanently damaging the fan or causing it to become noisy and ineffective."

Wanna provide a source if you're just gunna tell people to google shit, and when they do it comes back with the exact OPPOSITE result of your claim, thanks bbg 😘

u/system_error_02 Jun 23 '26

I think you meant to respond to the commentor I responded to

2

u/BMT82356 Jun 23 '26

If you had the back off then you have to put the back cover on again and plug it in for it turn on.

0

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

No the back was on, but i took it off, took off all the screws then put them all back with the cover and it turned on again 👍

2

u/Ciusblade Jun 23 '26

plug in the power cord. after disassembly it needs to plugged in in order to turn on again.

0

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

Thats what I did but it didnt work. Then I just disassembled it again, took all the screws out and then out them back in, after that my rog finally turned on

1

u/Ciusblade Jun 23 '26

glad you got it on. though i wouldn't run it for long until you get the new fan. good luck with everything.

1

u/Successful-Hearing87 Jun 24 '26

From what I know the ally has a fail safe feature that prevents the console from booting if even one of the fans doesnt spin. On your way of ripping off the blades you must have also broken the inner circuitry if the fan itself, thus the ally behaving like it was disconnected from the motherboard.

1

u/zirmada Jun 23 '26

Try turning it on while plugged in, hold the power button longer than usual. If that doesn't work, try draining the power and then charging it back up.

1

u/Maleficent_Dog_9687 Jun 25 '26

If you have taken the back lid off it will not turn back on again unless connected to power it strange but try and connect it to the charger and se if it turns on

5

u/CyberLarry77 Jun 23 '26

If you put power in to the fan it spins, if you spin the fan manually it generates power. You turned the fan in to a mini generator that sent power the wrong way down the wires in to the motherboard. You may indeed be cooked.

2

u/gadlele Jun 23 '26

There was a reason why you wanted to do that? Genuinely curious.

7

u/SUPERMAN_876 Jun 23 '26

I think "genuinely curious" is why they did it lol

2

u/MemphisBass Jun 23 '26

Why on earth would you do that?

What a shame

0

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

Just curious

2

u/RawDelli Jun 25 '26

The intrusive thought is extremely relatable, but please resist lol

2

u/MetallicFear Jun 25 '26

At least u became one of few peoples here who can claim to have witnessed the destruction of fans by the force of turbine activity.

1

u/natopoppins Jun 23 '26

Lmao 😂😭

1

u/SCHLAHPY Jun 26 '26

you shouldnt be doing this either way. spinning the fan generates a current, and you could fry your whole motherboard doing that while its off.

1

u/PullupsRocker Jun 24 '26

Probably with a compressor..

-5

u/karwanblox Jun 23 '26

Could be with a screwdriver... I hope I am wrong.

21

u/psbales Jun 23 '26

I wouldn’t run it like that - you’re just asking for all kinds of overheating issues. Just order a replacement fan, and don’t do whatever tf you did to that fan again!!

20

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

Its not turning on anymore, it means that there will be no overheating issue 👍

24

u/Peterchang47 Jun 23 '26

Bro got underheating issues now 🫪🙃

6

u/JoshTheRed1 Jun 23 '26

What happened? How did you manage to accidentally break all the fan blades?? And yes just buy a replacement fan

1

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

Blasting air into the fan 😬

3

u/zoobungaa Jun 23 '26

God damn what'd you use to blast it a supercharged turbo powered compressor 😂.

Nah that sucks tho I was also curious how you did that. Was it just canned air or something stronger??

2

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

I took it at work, we have a compressor that I underestimated 😅

5

u/chellis Jun 23 '26

Just for future reference (because we've all been there with compressed air) do not used compressed air on your fans. The other commentors stating its causing voltage backfeed into the board are incorrect (it does but its not a problem with quality fans/boards) but the real issue is the bearings and in your case the fan blades. If you used compressed air on both, id replace both. Even if 1 works it could be a potential future failure.

5

u/JaspahX ROG Ally X Jun 23 '26

One blast of canned air is not going to destroy your bearings. Jesus.

5

u/iprobablybrokeit Jun 23 '26

You're in a thread commenting on a photo of a fan that's been blown into 40 individual pieces by compressed air.

3

u/JaspahX ROG Ally X Jun 23 '26

Lol, fair point.

1

u/proanimus Jun 24 '26

To be fair, he appears to have used something a lot more powerful than the cans of compressed air people typically have at home. OP used an actual air compressor at his job.

I’d still agree to use caution either way, but OP didn’t do this with the “compressed air” most are talking about when cleaning electronics.

2

u/zoobungaa Jun 23 '26

Daaaaaamn yeah that'll do it.

Compressors can be strong af lmao

1

u/HydraG66 Jun 23 '26

That’s funny as hell, sorry.

3

u/Ranndomm7890 Jun 23 '26

3

u/Snake_eKe ROG Ally X Jun 23 '26

You're not cooked, your VGA will be if you turn it on

3

u/Luxor1968 Jun 23 '26

Smoked it. And you can get the fan from Asus for about $15. Wouldn’t trust Aliexpress.

3

u/_K4cper_ Jun 23 '26

Just how could you possibly have done that?

1

u/oGnSo Jun 23 '26

Compress air maybe.

3

Here’s an idea. Order a replacement fan

2

u/Helpful-Work-3090 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Jun 23 '26

Probably not. Modern fans have capacitors and diodes on the motor board to prevent that from happening. If it killed the fan controller on the motherboard, he's really unlucky.

1

u/lDarkPhoton Jun 23 '26

This ☝🏻

2

u/hazelization Jun 23 '26

im surprised someone could do this

1

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

I am even more surprised 😬

2

u/armlacoste Jun 23 '26

You’re not cooked, but your APU is about to be, lol. Don’t play it on one fan. Get a replacement fan online and get it replaced. Very easy to swap

2

u/ConversationMuch5374 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

You could've just use a can of compressed air and spray on the vent openings without dissemble the case

2

u/Aggravating-Exit-660 Jun 24 '26

You are the most well done steak ever

2

u/Educational-Snow5424 Jun 24 '26

Sorry this happened to you op. I'd have probably done the same with compressed air and now I definitely won't !

2

u/Zaekil Jun 24 '26

Get some replacement ones on ebay or aliexpress, they're dirt cheap and easy to replace. Don't try to game on it tho, unless you do some easy to run things like streaming games.

2

u/Glittering_Ad_994 Jun 26 '26

You've been cooked on well done my friend

3

u/JMandBY Jun 23 '26

Spinning the fan with compressed air while device is off can force the fans motor to act like a generator. This can send backward electrical voltage into your motherboard, potentially damaging sensitive components or frying your circuits. It can also over spin the bearings and cause permanent mechanical wear. Only thing you can do at this point is buy a new fan they are actually really cheap, and hope the device isnt fried

2

u/Moist-Cut-502 Jun 23 '26

Not true with a brushless dc motor.

2

u/Helpful-Work-3090 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Jun 23 '26

Modern brushless fans have capacitors and diodes to prevent this. If you get a pc fan and a multimeter, you won't be able to generate any voltage by spinning the fan, like a normal dc motor. The motherboard itself will also have protection circuitry as well.

That doesn't mean he didn't kill the fan bearing though, he probably did, but... he also needs to replace it regardless lol

-5

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

I did this while it was off, but when i tried to turn it on, it did but only for a few seconds, showing the Rog logo and then turning off. I cant turn it on anymore

1

u/Feronous Jun 23 '26

It has a sensor and knows when it’s been open. You need to filly re assemble it and plug it into the ORIGINAL OEM charger and hold the power button . After you get a new fan

1

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

I know, I already did this but didnt change the fan, is this the issue ?

-1

u/LadBooboo Jun 23 '26

So you're saying you let the fan spin by blowing compressed air through it while it was still connected to the main board? You sent god knows how much voltage back to the board by making that fan a generator and might have shorted something on the main board.

1

u/chellis Jun 23 '26

This is so wildly overstated even if the full 12v these fans are capable of got backfed there are esds to step down the voltage. Im not so certain Id run random ali express fans because of this but if those fans are oem, the odds that A. This person generated even 1/4 of the esds rated voltage and B. The esds didnt do their job is so low its not even worth the consideration. But ya, there are 1000 good reasons to not blow air in your fan without pretending backfeed voltage is a modern day issue.

1

u/Cestjuan Jun 23 '26

Ali Express fans will be fine. I mean, the joysticks sourced (for the OG Ally at least) are the same as the GDP Win 3 emulator device and they're just as reliable from Ali Express as they are directly from Asus. Fans are likely a similar story since they're truly not any different from a multitude of existing laptop/micro PC fans out there, many of which are likely Chinese manufactured anyways.

1

u/arrowrand Jun 23 '26

That’s not a great sign.

1

u/Radsolution Jun 23 '26

It’s replaceable

1

1

u/RelativeFew2595 Jun 23 '26

Any updates post it not working anymore?

1

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 23 '26

After i put the back plate back, it was not turning on, it was showing the rog logo like everytime when i turn it on but then it would shut down even when plugged in. Then i disassembled it again, took all the screws out and then i just had to put them back in, it finally turned on, but showing 70°C when on the desktop (i had not launched anything and the temp Kept rising) so i turned it off

1

Better no, it’s possible but risky, at least if you want to risk it try to lower the graphic settings

1

u/bownsey Jun 23 '26

You can buy a new one for like 10 bucks

1

u/kasmog Jun 23 '26

Is that the new mini Dyson blade less fan?

Seriously though, replacement fan should be cheap.

1

u/Glass_Blackberry_987 Jun 24 '26

I think you can buy better cooling systems.

1

u/neon_96 Jun 24 '26

It's an upgrade bladless fan lol

1

u/johny335i Jun 24 '26

A friend of mine had this happen on his og Ally 2 years ago - but he did drop it while it was running the fans at full blast and one of them exploded just like yours.

1

u/No_Context_9180 Jun 24 '26

And did he fix it ?

1

u/johny335i Jun 24 '26

He RMAed it and they fixed it for him. You can buy fans on aliexpress, they are not hard to replace.

1

u/Shadowpaw-21 Jun 24 '26

Replacement fans are not too much. I just actually snagged a set of oem replacement ones for my ally x for only 24 for both of them. I took a chance on some no name ones cuz I noticed they blurred out all the manufacturer details in the images right where my fans said delta and the model # sticker. Sure enough these ones for less than half the price of buying the oem ones which were 30 a piece are the identical fans.

1

u/give_an_answer_pls Jun 25 '26

Playing with 1 fan is like trying to blow up a bouncy house with your mouth or get rid of a forest fire with a water bottle. I recommend getting it repaired or buying new fans cuz this is gonna cause a meltdown.
