Question I accidentally bought a Rog Ally X
I accidentally bought a Rog Ally X without knowing the difference between a Rog Ally X and Rog Xbox Ally X.
I paid 700$ off Facebook Marketplace. Should I keep it or try to resell it again?

u/IUsedTheRandomizer Aug 16 '26
The Ally X is probably the best of the series so far. The XAX isn't so much better that you should worry about it, and $700 is pretty spot on for what the Ally X is going for these days. Remember it's basically a gaming PC, $700 for something that can capably play almost everything these days is a steal; you can barely get video cards alone for that price.
9
u/TwizzleShnizzle Aug 16 '26
I 100% second this. I've owned all the Ally models (Z1E & Z2E). Ally X is my favourite, the Z2E chip is not worth the extra money.
2
u/Chanureadeats Aug 17 '26
I will have to disagree. Z2E offers the right perfomance at 17w for AAA to run in reasonable settings at 30+fps. Also, the ergonomics are really an upgrade. I don't want to pour the benchmarks and just tell you how it performs better on paper but I have also owned all the Allys with the exception of Z2A and the XAX wins considering you pay $850 for a used one under warranty
1
u/mrcroketsp Aug 19 '26
Calling it a gaming PC is a bit of a stretch, tbh, its GPU is equivalent to a GTX 1650. You can get a better GPU for less than 100 bucks, though it’s still a really cool machine.
1
u/Snoekity Sep 03 '26
Oems would 100% label a barebones system with a 1650 as a gaming pc in current day if they have the stock.
19
u/Ebone710 Aug 16 '26
You got the black one? 700 is not bad if it's like brand new condition. The XAX is over $1000 and is maybe 15-20% more performance.
2
u/GamerandYa Aug 16 '26
Yes.
12
u/tweakbsd Aug 16 '26
I think the OG Ally X is still the better handheld. The Xbox one is bulky and ugly. The OG has 24GB ram as well, has USB4 and is still better value for 700 than 1000 for tge Xbox one that is barely faster. And just so chunky.
2
u/Fit_Republic_2277 Aug 17 '26
xbox one has better battery life that beats everything as a handheld.
2
u/tweakbsd Aug 17 '26
That depends. If you set both devices to max wattage they die about the same time. Both have 80wh batteries.
2
u/tweakbsd Aug 17 '26
And I say it again ergonomics are so much nicer on the OG Ally X! And the non X OG Ally even better. It was the most comfy handheld I ever had and hate Asus for making it thicker every generation

u/Snoekity Sep 03 '26
I've only ever heard the opposite due to the controller style grips, what is the issue ergonomically? Is it just heavier?
1
u/Life_Translator7469 Aug 17 '26
Honestly I bet that would be a big debate because I like the ergonomics on the Xbox ally x any day I have one hand so the Xbox ergonomics feels way better and plus the ally x struggled very very hard to run monster hunter wilds and the Xbox ally doesn’t struggle on low settings at all fr so that little performance everyone says isn’t worth it definitely can be with it depending on what you play my ally x would run monster at like 25 fps and if i used fram gen then it was just straight up laggy the Xbox one I have not had this problem at all
9
u/Ebone710 Aug 16 '26
If I was you personally I just keep the X. But if you have the money and you think that the little extra boost in performance is worth that extra money go for it.
7
u/IamMeemo ROG Ally X Aug 16 '26
I’ve tried both the ROG Ally X and the Xbox Ally X. There are pros and cons to each. I decided to keep the Ally X because the performance boost of the Xbox Ally X wasn’t worth the extra few hundred dollars (but it’s still an exceptional device). That’s a long way of saying I’ve been in your shoes (or at least a similar situation) and I think you’ll be better off saving the cash.
2
u/belushi_wav Aug 16 '26
Keep it, the Xbox ally x is not a generational bump in performance so you’re not missing out on much.
1
u/Zoro_Asura824 Aug 16 '26
I have the X and I love it. If you wanted the Xbox one though, I could understand being frustrated. I don’t think there is a huge difference though.

u/Satta23 Aug 16 '26
20% more performance ? No way… I think 10% max
1
u/Life_Translator7469 Aug 17 '26
Even if it is only 10 percent that 10 percent actually mattered so much for the game I play lol monster hunter wilds was actually pretty much unplayable on the ally x like 25 FPS if I’m remembering correctly but my new Xbox ally x can hold like 50-55 fps no frame gen !
1
u/Satta23 Aug 18 '26
No way ur playing Wilds on an Ally lol. Did the game got updates or using 3rd party software?

u/Electrical_Puffin Aug 16 '26
I still have my ally x and I love it. Been traveling recently and it is my main gaming device. The hassle to sell and upgrade would outweigh the loss from selling and purchase price. Think it’s still better than the steam deck that people buy today.
My vote is stick to it and don’t resell or try to upgrade. It’s not worth the hassle.
4
u/rockdude8919 Aug 16 '26
Ally X is a great console. I paid $799 new and it's totally worth the money and can play anything you throw at it. It's really not that much less powerful then the Xbox Ally X. It's way better than the Steam Deck or the white base Xbox Ally. The Xbox Ally X is $1000 new I think so not worth it.
3
u/F0urrings Aug 16 '26
I mean - at least you’re ally will have buttons that aren’t loud enough to wake the dead.
9
u/Intrepid-Vacation-51 Aug 16 '26
You were basically scammed, you could’ve got a used ROG Xbox Ally X for that price
5
u/Dominjo555 Aug 16 '26
It's funny that you are getting down votes when you are right. He could actually buy used XaX for $700.
4
u/Noobzorg Aug 16 '26
If its marketed as a normal ally x, not an xbox ally x then OP didn't get scammed.
He just paid more than what its worth.
1
u/Far_School_2206 ROG Ally X Aug 16 '26
When I posted my Asus Rog Ally X mint with the included 3 months of gamepass still unclaimed for sale. The guy asked me if it was the XAX when I had it listed as the Asus Rog Ally X.
I decided to keep it.

u/Interesting-Copy-954 Aug 16 '26
I got mine for 850 with a carrying case and 1tb sd card. Was a great deal as it was pretty much brand new
1
u/No_Signal_3576 Aug 16 '26
I want to see the post from market place ain’t no way dude he got tricked lol.
2
u/SaulGoodman699 Aug 16 '26
I like the rog ally x better then the Xbox version I would just keep it. Little less performance but not by much
2
u/jossege Aug 16 '26
I would keep it strictly because I prefer the form factor of the older design. I want something slimmer to take up less space in a bag when I travel with it. The new grips on the body add bulk I don’t want. This is coming from a guy that has an original Ally Z1E with an upgraded ssd and battery though, so take that with a grain of salt.
2
u/cosmitz Aug 16 '26
Keep the X, and if you like the environment and it fits into your life, look for other things later.
2
2
u/Dglass710 Aug 16 '26
My understanding is that the big difference is going to be battery life. They nearly doubled it for the Xbox ally x but as people are pointing out the difference in performance might not be that big. I still game on the Xbox version till it dies and have to find a wall or use a power bank regardless. No portable device will let you game all day on battery but it’s like 2.5 hrs for AAA games and 5 hours for indie titles and emulation of older consoles
2
u/Past-Wafer4617 Aug 16 '26
Might as well get your moneys worth and use it. It’s still a good device. Probably use it and see what they put out in the next year or two. Who knows maybe there’ll be a new device or better choice. Sell it then and get a xax or whatever’s in the market then.
2
u/Acceptable_Appeal860 Aug 16 '26
My question is if the purchase came with any extras (upgraded storage, case, screen protector, etc). I bought my X for $500 w/a 4tb Samsung 990 Pro, screen protector, and JSaux case, but that was a few months after it came out aka before the rampocalypse.
Imo you bought a very capable device that better fits the narrative of portable PC handheld gaming. Like others have stated, the Xbox AX is a bulkier/uglier device that doesn't provide that generational bump in performance so you are not missing much unless you would like a rinkidink Xbox button included. The only "future proofing" you would be missing out on is the AI integration that's on the z2e chip which I don't think any game has capitalized on yet.
Lastly, don't listen to the reddit noise. You did NOT get scammed unless the description said XBox Ally X and it was actually the 2024 version... and even then it's really not something you should hang your head over. Sounds like the seller just adjusted the value in line with the current inflation we are dealing with. In terms of a Fair, Good, Great, or Steal deal on that purchase, I'd say it was Fair if you just came out of it with the base handheld and charger.
2
u/Warlord698 Aug 17 '26
I mean, the Ally X is still a phenomenal system. At least you didn't mess up and accidentally buy the lowest end of the systems
2
u/FeaR_FuZiioN Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26
Everyone telling you too you to keep when in reality you overpaid for a last generation chip. Doesn’t really matter how the XAX is not a massive leap forward, yeah maybe for those who already have a Ally X Z1E but if you don’t have a handheld and you had your sights on the XAX then that’s the one you should have gotten. Don’t let people fool you into thinking you got a great deal, everything about the XAX is better than the Ally X, everything. The Ally X owners claiming the XAX is outright worse are just coping with themselves because they are stuck with the previous generation chip so they are trying to justify their purchase. Get the XAX
1
u/Life_Translator7469 Aug 17 '26
Bro I was going to say this but I didn’t want to come off harsh 😭 I had the ally x and just upgraded recently and it really is that much better atleast for the games I play fr monster hunter wilds was actually unplayable on ally x but the XAX I can run it like a damn charm
1
u/AgentUnknown821 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Sep 10 '26
Not really…I have the money to buy a XAX but the 400+ complaints of broken thumb sticks made me settle for a minor RAM increase instead…you’re paying $899 (Ally X) and $999 on top of that for just a 20% performance boost…for me it isn’t worth it…otherwise I would. I love Xbox…I own a PC and a Series S…I’m just not there yet to justify it..

u/Creepy-Dependent5722 Aug 18 '26
i buy a used RAX it on purpose, and like you accidentally recognize it got 2280 ssd instead of 2230 size. now i need a ssd extender to fit my old 2tb from the OG ally z1e. couple of remove-reinstall fw maybe. bigger ram and battery with just extra ~150$ after sell my old one, is a fine deal to me. But to me ssd price is more annoying problem now if you want a bigger storage. RXAX Z2E gen is amazing but cost you alot for 20 ~30% performance.
2
u/AgentUnknown821 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Sep 10 '26
Yeah I bought the ROG Ally X last week because I can’t stand paying $1100 for just a 20% increase in performance and also do the lottery on not getting broken thumb sticks…IMO a PC hardheld device is only as good as it’s controls…
If you end up with broken controls then it’s not worth $1000 let alone $100 because what exactly am I going to be able to do with it?!
I love the way it feels, I tried the XAX in-store at Best Buy but it just isn’t worth it for me…I’ll wait for a slightly higher increase in performance and more durable thumb sticks…
2
u/btj002 Aug 16 '26
The x is better to me, personally. The difference between the z2e and z1e is not big whatsoever and the screens the same so is the battery and ram. I prefer the original X's design to the Xbox's visually but admittedly haven't held an XAX yet.
1
u/SaltDeception Aug 16 '26
The controller-style grips on the XAX were the selling point for me. It’s aesthetically unappealing, but I don’t get as fatigued holding it.
1
u/tinyfluffychicken ROG Ally X Aug 16 '26
Play it for awhile and see if you like it? I have an Ally X and I love it. It’s been able to play any game I’ve thrown at it and it’s an emulation machine.
1
u/Interesting-Copy-954 Aug 16 '26
Use it and see if you like it. If this is your first handheld pc that is still a fantastic first one. Xbox Ally x is better yes, but only with a few quality of life features being the biggest difference aside from the little bit more performance the XAX gets.
1
u/Electronic-Set-1722 Aug 16 '26
Well, you've bought it now, and I'm not sure of hwo the USA market is for these devices, but in the Uk, a used rog ally x is about £150-200 cheaper than the xbox ally x
Selling it might not be the way to go immediately since you'll most likely lose a bit on it as well, unless you're selling it to another person who doesn't know the difference and is ready to pay xbox ally x money for it

What is the storage and I have one (ally x) and would not upgrade to ROG Xbox ally x

1
u/NaturalSelecty ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Aug 16 '26
That’s not too bad. A little more than you should’ve paid but nothing that’s so much that you should be upset with yourself. Enjoy the new device. It’s one of the best.
1
u/Original-Cut-331 Aug 17 '26
Just keep it i have the original ally z1 extreme and am able to play Xbox games flawlessly
1
u/Particular_Bet3733 Aug 17 '26
Everyone gets caught up thinking about power in these things
The ally X can handle everything that you realistically should expect to run well on a handheld device. If you really need the 15% performance boost the z2e chip offers then spend a bit extra and get a gaming PC because you're gonna be tethered to the charger anyway
1
u/Fit-Dig2275 Aug 17 '26
In today's market, who knows you can sell it for $800 and be considered a good deal at the end of the year🤣
1
u/Panamaicol Aug 17 '26
This is the one I’ve had for the past couple of years before upgrading to the MSI Claw 8ex ai+. It’s the best handheld I’ve ever owned, they got everything perfect with that one, it’s my official traveling handheld
1
u/Significant_Apple904 ROG Ally X Aug 17 '26
You're not missing out much, around 15% performance, more ergonomic handles, better joysitkcs, that's about it
1
u/Sarm-ally_Pirate Aug 17 '26
Just buy 3D printed grips for it. You will lose money to get basically the same handheld. The Xbox Ally has better ergonomics
1
u/Life_Translator7469 Aug 17 '26
Better battery life and the economics part I would say is definitely a personal preference because I like the economics for the Xbox ally X it is much better especially since I have one hand so the joystick just fits for me
1
u/Sarm-ally_Pirate Aug 17 '26
I never had the Ally X but I tried the Xbox Ally and it was definitely worth it. Unfortunately I already have too many handhelds.
They both have the same battery. The efficiency is a little better.
1
u/CandidSilent Aug 17 '26
Rog Ally X is an exceptional device, however you overpaid..
I've seen them go for lower 500s.. Hopefully the one you got is near 100% battery health and 100% ssd health with accessories at $700 lol
1
u/prizedcoffeecup Aug 18 '26
Ya did get schmucked a bit, but you should be able to still enjoy that one how it is. Trying to resell would end up more headache than its worth with Marketplace shenanigans these days.
1
u/Odd_Panic1700 Aug 18 '26
Keep it dude. It’s worth haven’t that PC capability on it, plus with the Xbox app it runs great Xbox games
1
u/Spiritual-Newt-923 Sep 02 '26
I'd say keep it and enjoy it for a while they still run pretty good imo. I have a couple of bugs with windows os mine now and then but it's still pretty sturdy for some games I like to be able to take with me
1
u/Kxshyp0p Aug 16 '26
you overpaid, i would try and return it or re-sell it if possible
2
u/TooTiredAndBored Aug 16 '26
The X goes for 700. But it depends on condition and size of ssd plus any accessories.
-1
u/blackkice Aug 16 '26
Eh, I'd still say they overpaid. I got my XAX for $650 with a dock included and 11 months left on the warranty. I know I got a deal, but $700 for the base ally x is too much.
3
u/TooTiredAndBored Aug 16 '26
The X isnt the base. Its the X. More ram then the z1e white.
Thay being said i do think it comes down to ssd size and accessories. I bought my X with a 2tb ssd a case and a dock for 700. Even if I got the X at 500 it would cost way more than the 200 difference to get a 2tb ssd and the case plus a dock.
And your xax was a steal. Those sell for 800 to 900 used. You got a great deal. But 650 is not the norm of the xax.
-1
u/blackkice Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
I'm saying he bought the normal Ally X, not the Xbox Ally X when I say " base X" or I wouldn't have said X at all... And at least in my area the Xbox version regularly goes for $700/$750 with no accessories. I think $700 for the Ally X is an overpay when the Xbox Ally X can be found for that price with just a little patience and is decently superior. Also, you can't just assume his Ally X has any upgrades to make the price more reasonable.
Especially considering you can get an Ally X on ebay with a ton of accessories for sub $700 right now.
1
u/Prestigious-Ebb-3845 Aug 16 '26
What nobody here is mentioning in the rog ally x vs the Xbox ally is you can hook up stuff like external gpus to the rog ally you can't with the xbox ally. So with some extra investment you can make it way more powerful than the Xbox ally. But if your just wanting stock and only handheld mode get an Xbox ally
2
u/bobboman Aug 16 '26
What are you talking about? You can absolutely use a egpu with the xbox ally, you would run it through thunderbolt 4 not the proprietary xg port on the og rog ally or ally x
1
u/Far_School_2206 ROG Ally X Aug 16 '26
the Rog Ally X doesn't have the XG-Mobile port, only the OG Ally Z1/Z1E does.
2
u/AgentUnknown821 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Sep 10 '26
The beauty of that is you can use whatever E-GPU enclosure you want instead of just ASUS’s XG Mobile GPUs…
1
u/Acceptable_Appeal860 Aug 16 '26
Both devices can be hooked up to an egpu with the thunderbolt 4 plug in.

Buying something is not getting scammed. If the person selling it sold it as a rog ally x then its on OP to check if its a good price.

You probably overpaid by $100.
That being said, don't know what selling would accomplish, you're just out $100 with no system.
It's a very good handheld.
