Tobacco Zware Van Nelle Review

Post image
12 Upvotes

This has to be the go to shag for many Europeans. Praised all over the world for its exceptional taste and high nictonin content. When you say Zware shag you say Van Nelle. Surely it must be the best shag out there. Lets find out!

First of all the shag is pretty humid wich i personally like. Its easy to roll with. The package is the best ive seen. 50 gram pouches usually dont come with a zip lock system but this one does. This helps to keep the tobacco fresh and prevents smell contamination.

The taste of the tobacco is outspoken and it has that typical light spicyness associated with zware. The taste is very smoky and dark. But at the same time the throat feel is rather mild and soft. But harsher than for example Zware Brandaris.

It is a solid Zware shag and the strongest around when it comes to nictonin content. But i wouldnt say it is the strongest when it comes to taste. Brandaris has a way more outspoken taste. But that comes with a price tag. In Germany a pack of Van Nelle will cost you €15,50 where the Brandaris costs €17,50.

Van Nelle is definitely the king of the Zware shag. So other cheaper manufacturers will ofcourse try to mimic the taste. John player special zware definitely comes close to tasting like Van Nelle and that for a cheaper price. So is it worth it? In my opinion yes but for many the cheaper brands will do just fine.

Has anyone gotten a pouch from "La industria Handmade". They look amazing. Thinking of the maroon one or black and red trim. Always skeptical till I hear otherwise when its internet gets.

Looking for something clean and tasty and not too harsh

Girlfriend and I just got back from her hometown in Europe and enjoyed the hand rolled cigs way more than the usual American spirit packs. We're looking for a nice mellow flavor. Nothing harsh. But at the same time as additive free and "clean" would be ideal. I'm sure everyone has a take and we'd like to read all of them. Thank you!

Question Metal cigarette roller problems

I bought metal roller yesterday and rolled first 10 cigarettes without much problems but today when I roll a cigarette it rolls more to the side opposite of filter and sometimes twists the cigarette and makes it narrower at the top and makes it harder to inhale. I tried putting tobacco in more evenly, I tried putting more tobacco on the top and nothing helps.

When I rolled first 10 cigarettes I didn't pay much attention to putting even amount of tobacco or how much I put at the top and I didn't have any problems.

Am I doing something wrong or did I somehow mess up the roller?

Question Returning smoker, looking to RYO en bulk.

So- I just want to see everyone's consesus now that new flavors have come out, and while i love marlboro. It gets annoying to have to keep buying you know what i mean? So I wanna get a set up, that is easy, mostly sits out of the way and can do either kings or 100 sizes. Specifically, I am looking for flavors like Marlboro slates, reds, No.27. I like menthol flavors honestly, but I don't mind basic tobacco products and I'm willing to try every brand, every flavor of prepack if you have a particular brand you think I should try. I just tried Natural American Spirits blue last night, and honestly I was surprised at how good it was. My mom used to hate spirit cause they "tasted like ass" But yeah I'm looking into buying a setup that allows for storage, MYO, and bulk creation. I know you can use any basic tupperware but, I need to be a bit discreet with my containers, live with my girlfriend's parents right now. And they don't like smoking even though my girlfriend and her brother smoke. (I just don't wanna get caught with basically a small factory and get blamed for them smoking when they grabbed reds while I was at work and didn't tell me they were going to smoke.)

Update1: I have tried camel blues. Not a fan of the filter as it makes it taste like a napkin that someone sprayed cologne on. But removing the filter and smoking them with a special secondary filter i got on amazon actually makes them bareable but not as good to me as slates and reds. Also tried the dark blue-non organic american spirits last night and they are actually pretty good.

Dark Horse Super Slim Extra Long Filter Tubes, Manual Injector, Drum

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I wanted to see if it would be possible to smoothly inject moist pouch tobacco with a manual table top injector. I used Drum regular tobacco, Dark Horse Super Slim Extra Long Filter Tubes and a Chinese made table top manual injector like Scott's/Hermit Krab.

The injector was made for slim filter tubes, not for extra slim, it still worked though.

Cigarettes I made were not tightly packed, easy to draw and smooth. Maybe too smooth. The first cigarette took 4 minutes to smoke. I have a few bags of regular Ryback tobacco left, I think I will use them up this way because with regular filter tubes they are harsh in taste compared to many tobaccos.

Ryback nicotine question

People have warned me that Ryback is very high in nicotine and even stronger than an American Spirit Black of the same weight.

I’ve been smoking 1g worth of it in each ryo cigarette and I’m not really having that experience. Although it’s nice and strong in flavor, throat hit, etc, I feel as it is about the same for me (nicotine-wise) as smoking a Spirit Yellow or sometimes a Blue.

I’m very happy with it as I was worried that it would pack too much of a nicotine punch but seems just right.

Just wondering if anyone else has felt overwhelmed by the strength or have the same experience as me.

Tobacco What 1lb bag brands do you use to avoid crumbs?

I’ve thrown away about 3lbs of worthless Ohm crumbs. Super disappointed with it.
What brands offer you nice full bags of ribbons or strings with minimal crumbs? Please mention the size of the cut. Ohm I threw away bags of fine stringy “ribbon” and regular ribbon.
I have videos up if you’re curious.

Cigarette machines Best way to make quality cigarettes with European rolling tobacco (no volume tobacco available in Norway)?

Hi everyone!

I'm in Norway and looking to start making my own cigarettes using filter tubes and an injection machine. I've been researching this quite a bit, but there's one major problem: we don't seem to have access to the expanded/volume tobacco that so many American MYO users recommend.

What we have instead is traditional European-style rolling tobacco, often quite stringy, sometimes fairly moist, and sold in small pouches.

Some examples of tobacco available here:

- Petterøes Original 3 and 4 (44g)

- Petterøes Light Blue 3 and White 3 (44g)

- Eventyr Original 3 (50g, medium cut)

- Gullsnitt 3 and Blå Strek 3 (50g)

- Tiedemanns Red and Yellow Mixture (44g)

These are ordinary rolling tobaccos, not expanded volume tobacco.

What I'm trying to achieve:

I'd like to make cigarettes that are as close as possible in quality to factory-made Marlboro Gold or Prince White: consistent filling, smooth draw, reasonable strength and flavour, and an even, preferably fairly slow burn.

I consider Winner Tip tubes which are standard filtered cigarette tubes sold here in Norway. Quote expensive though.

I would ideally like to make around 400 cigarettes (20 packs) in a session, while saving both money and time.

Machines I'm considering:

I've been looking at the manual Scotte crank injector, Hawk-Matic HK6 and Powermatic V+. Scotte seems particularly interesting because people say it handles different tobacco cuts without much preparation.

However, I would prefer an automatic machine if it can reliably handle our tobacco.

  1. Which machine would you recommend specifically for traditional European rolling tobacco? Is Scotte actually a better choice than an automatic el injector when using long, fine-cut/shag tobacco?

  2. How do you prepare this type of tobacco for injecting? I've seen people suggest fluffing and airing it out, cutting it with scissors, using a food chopper with short pulses, or sieving out the dust. What works best in practice without ruining the tobacco?

  3. How do you get the best cigarette quality? I'm especially interested in the right amount of tobacco per standard king-size tube, avoiding overly tight cigarettes, empty spaces near the filter, torn tubes and uneven burning.

  4. Does anyone here regularly use European rolling tobacco such as Drum, Golden Virginia, Pueblo or similar in a tube injector? I'd love to hear your exact setup and preparation method.

  5. If you were starting from scratch with only regular rolling tobacco available, which tobacco cut, machine and preparation method would you choose?

I'm willing to invest in a good machine, but I'd rather not spend hundreds on something that only works properly with volume tobacco I can't buy.

I'm looking for the simplest, fastest and most reliable way to get consistently good cigarettes from what we can actually purchase here.

Any practical experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Norway!

Today i rolled a mix of two tobaccos.
Fumo Peão Tradicional ( black tobacco), smells smooth, silk and rich dark chocolate with a hint of sugar. Very pleasant. Also mix with D’ora Golden Virginia, high quality Virginia very sweet (smell and taste).
It was one of my best mix so far, the impressive thing is that the Fumo Peão tobacco just cost me 1$ dollar for 30g bag lol

Raw whole leaf tobacco Another experimental blend with the Virginia BK(Total leaf supply). More Virginia, less burley and some Orinoco.I'll be using different tubes this time, I suspect the Qweys tubes messed with the taste of the previous batch.
