Michael Jackson's embracement of religion
Why do you think that Michael, out of all his brothers, embraced religion in his life? He embraced it so thoroughly that he stayed religious till the end.
Katherine Jackson was a Jehovah Witness and she introduced all of her children to her religion, but according to her, she never forced her children to continue to partake in it, giving them a choice. Outside of Rebbie, Latoya, and Michael, all of the other siblings chose not to continue being a JW. In her first book, Latoya described how religion was taught in the Jackson household:
“By this time most of our siblings had basically given it up. Five days a week the two of us and Mother studied the Bible at home and attended the Kingdom Hall. (Randy always wanted to go to the meetings with us but could never get dressed in time) Every morning Michael and I witnessed, knocking on doors around Los Angeles, spreading the word of Jehovah. As my brother’s fame grew, he had to don convincing disguises, like a rubber fat suit he bought years later, around the time of Thriller.”
Darls Centola, in her book Finding Truth with Michael, stated that the Jacksons were new arrivals in her high school and one of the first things Michael did was try to connect with other religious peers. He connected with her once he found out how well studied she was in the bible, and they set up a bible study session every lunch period.
Why do you think Michael embraced religion so strongly? He was a millionaire celebrity with millions of adoring female fans throwing themselves at him and he chose to embrace a strict religion which put limits on his behavior. He took the JW teachings seriously, not wanting to celebrate his birthdays nor any major holiday. He felt so strongly about it that he said he cried after Elizabeth Taylor was finally able to convince him to celebrate Christmas. Michael sought limits in his life. The JW church wasn’t afraid to tell him no or tell him what things they didn’t want him to do. He had JW advisors that went with him on tour to make sure he didn’t do anything too out of pocket. Even when he left JW, he still tried to follow many of their principles.
So why did he, of all his brothers, embraced religion?
