SIMPLE QUESTION Stupidest reason someone got kicked out of med school?

2.0k Upvotes

I’ll go first. One guy posed with guns and posted the photos to fb. Same day, he sent intimidating emails to several classmates. He actually made it to 4th year before getting kicked out. Now he’s working some entry level lab tech job and keeps getting busted for minor crimes like shoplifting chips from gas stations.

SIMPLE QUESTION Where are all the gold diggers?

1.7k Upvotes

Growing up, I always heard that I should watch out for hot gold diggers. As a newly minted attending about to make the big bucks, where would I find these attractive gold diggers? All evidence right now seems to indicate that this was a lie.

During residency, while he was married, he rotated to another hospital. During that stint he'd met someone, gotten them pregnant. Came back to our unit. Later gets the attending job. Wife finds out. Wife comes to the hospital and tells his business to everyone, including the chief, who is sitting in the room.

He is now supporting the ex-wife and their kids AND the other woman and their child. Lives alone.

SIMPLE QUESTION What is the most unhinged response (to anything work-related) you’ve seen from a surgeon?

1.0k Upvotes

Mine is: attending is told their case is cancelled because the prior one overran and now they cannot complete it before the OR staff goes home. Attending says ”it’s ok, they can stay late”. Attending is told no thats not happening.

Attending rips up his patient list, blows the little scraps across the room, slams the door shut and starts screaming in the corridor about staff laziness.

SIMPLE QUESTION I think I finally understand why people go into surgery

I'm a psych resident with zero interest in surgery whatsoever, but I climb. I think climbing and surgery are actually very similar in some respects. There's an intensity of focus and subsequent time dilation that occurs that is extremely addicting. It allows you to enter into a "flow state" or something very close to it with regularity. You're not thinking, you're just being, experiencing, reacting, etc. Everything fades to silence, even your thoughts get muted, except maybe if something abrupt happens that jars you out of it, lol.

Some climbers are so addicted that they live the "dirt bag" lifestyle working odd jobs and traveling just to be able to climb. Surgeons/surgeons in training also live an insane lifestyle obviously.

Am I far off? Surgeons, climbers, surgeon climbers, climber surgeons, chime in!

SIMPLE QUESTION Is residency in NYC really that bad?

Hello! I was planning on trying to apply for residency in NYC but I’ve seen some residents share the sentiment of NYC being a toxic wasteland for residency especially with how mean and abusive nurses are there. Now I know hospital are generally tiresome but Is it really that bad in NYC? Are the rumors of people avoiding NYC true and are the nurses really that disrespectful there?

SIMPLE QUESTION What kind of person thrives in your specialty?

I was reading some comments and I became curious about this.

It looks like in psychiatry, someone that is able to maintain emotional distance without losing empathy will do well.

In surgery, someone that is able to take ownership of their mistakes/complications and work extremely hard to avoid them, all while never dwelling on them, will be able to do well.

SIMPLE QUESTION How are the medical students?

How are you resident perceiving the medical students being minted these days? I went from being one, teaching them in residency and fellowship to having little interaction as a private practice physician. I always had hard working diligent students whether they were from DO or MD schools, foreign grads. As a fellow I was at a more prestigious institution and noticed the students weren’t allowed to do as much, and the attending/residents/fellows had little interaction with them outside didactics/lectures. Wouldn’t let them seem patients alone, write notes, pimp, close during surgery etc. When I asked why, they all pretty much said that they did the minimum and wanted to limit interactions as much as possible to avoid any conflict. They said asking a question a medical student didn’t know could be seen as a microagression and they’d be written up etc. They didn’t talk to them or interact with them in fear they’d somehow get in trouble, a joke , tone of voice or comment would be taken the wrong way or other similar misunderstanding. I was in shock, as I had always trained in community or hybrid hospitals, with foreign grads, DO’s lower tier MD’s etc. Is this still the case? Has it gotten more widespread? Worse? Better? Or was this just an isolated event at a specific institution?

SIMPLE QUESTION Most ridiculous excuse you’ve come across during residency?

My fellow resident was late because they ”wanted to eat their breakfast with their kids (this happens daily with the lateness but okay, the next part though -) who after eating said they wanted to see the end of the tv program they were watching” so the resident stayed to watch the tv show. They were over an hour late.

SIMPLE QUESTION What is the WORST pimping that you’ve experienced?

First time in the OR with this vascular attending, he hasn’t said a word to me since we started, has never looked at me or directly adressed to me. Halfway through he suddenly looks up at me, and says this:

”You had better answer this correctly. What is this structure here?”

He isn’t pointing at anything.

”Which one are you referring to?”

He looks at me for a minute and says I should switch to medicine.

SIMPLE QUESTION this shit sucks. help.

TLDR: I hate being a doctor. I hate healthcare. I am ashamed to have entered this field. I want out. I need help (not depressed). No I won’t dox myself with details. Yes it was my choice to start and keep going, but I also feel that I was mislead by people I trusted. Admittedly this has involved a great extent of self-deception, justified under trying to be tough, perseverance, ‘resistance is the way’-think, etc. If you like being a doctor, GOOD FOR YOU. Every day I feel an increasing sense that the only way for ME to get over my despair is to quit healthcare entirely, but it feels impossible. I chose the wrong job for myself and now I’m fucked. I’m stuck. How did anyone gather the escape velocity required to break free? Looking only for commiseration or concrete guidance.
