Hello I’m Anton 25 from Sweden how is Riga in particular as I am now deciding where I want to apply for medical school and I kinda wanna study abroad.
How is Riga? Would Latvians recommend it? Also how are the gyms. Is there an actual bodybuilding scene there?

Ah it’s swedish. It’s a bought name so it’s only like 30 people who are born in it or married in who can have it. Not Anton of course but the surname

Why not study med.school in Sweden? Seems like Scandinavian universities are taken in higher regard.

I am still leaning toward that yes but it’s more the experience of living abroad that’s intriguing. I’ve lived in Spain 2 years ago.

I'd suggest studying here as part of erasmus. It will allow you to get a better feel for the enviroment before commiting.

higher regard is debatable. Your skills will have the final say

When applying for internationas residency accreditation and where it comes from has an important impact. Only when you can show your skills, someone can assess them.

I have a few foreign friends from Germany and Sweden who went to RSU (medical school) in Riga. After graduating they all got into good positions back in their home countries and are very successful in their fields. Very different too - one is in orthopedic surgery, one in Psychiatry, the Swede became a Primary Care Physician etc
And they definitely had fun - I was roommates with a few and hung out with many of them, the student parties were fun, the studying itself seemed to be enjoyable to them, but Riga is also a relatively calm city, so there are less risks of losing your head to partying as a student than in cities like Berlin, Paris or London.
The flights to Sweden are short and inexpensive, rent in the center is cheap (for westerners), food is good (the utility bills can get super high tho). Vast majority of people younger than 35 speak very good English. And the community of German and Swedish students seems quite big.
But keep in mind that Latvia is still in the east. Outside of center it has a post soviet vibe, and people can get unfriendlier the further you move. It's quite cold and summers have little sun and lots of rain. The nature is pretty but coming from Sweden you'll unlikely to be impressed. But then again I feel like it's a very good school of life, as it would take you out of your comfort zone a bit.

I’m from Luleå we have even worse weather yea. Also I don’t drink so I don’t think it’ll be much of an issue given I’ve lived in Marbella and not gona out once. But good to hear the school is good

Salaries are not so high, people are nice, russian speakers are tolerate (in this sub they lie, I spend vacations in Riga and I interacted with locals) , is like English in other countries. Gyms are full and better equipped but be careful the meme "my gym has an hotel" is real here xD , but they complain because they have never been in worse places like Berlin and they are a bit picky (which is good thing because that make pressure to the business to improve their services, food here is great)

Hey mate, look over on medschool in EU subreddit, sounds something like that. There was recently a discussion about medschool in Latvia. People were very positive and really liked it here. I think you will like it here. There is just massive international student community in Riga STRADINS University. There are students from USA, till Australia, and many from Germany and Sweden. Through my contact abroad I can tell that German hospital department chefs hold Latvian diploma in very high regard.
