This was a few years back. I was on my way to work. Usual morning traffic. Some guy rear ended me at full speed. I could see him in my rear view mirror, and all there was to do was hold on and watch it unfold. He must’ve looked up just before he hit, because he tried to swerve into the median at the last second, and when he hit the back left corner of my car and bumped against the median, physics decided that he should pop up onto his nose and slide by my car. I watched the underside of his car go past my window. Then he dropped back down in front of me.

This incident happened in Nova Scotia, in the busy Halifax area, where morning rush-hour traffic can be hectic and drivers need to stay alert. I was driving within the posted speed limit when a child suddenly crossed the road in front of my vehicle, away from a designated pedestrian crossing. A safe pedestrian crossing, or zebra crossing, was less than 100 metres away. Thankfully, I reacted in time and brought my vehicle to a safe stop, and there was no contact or injury. This incident highlights how quickly a dangerous situation can develop for both pedestrians and drivers. Children may not fully understand the risks of crossing a busy road, so it is important for parents and guardians to teach them to use designated crossings, look both ways, and wait until it is safe to cross. At the same time, drivers must remain alert, anticipate unexpected situations, and adjust their driving to road and traffic conditions, especially during the morning rush. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and just a few seconds of caution can prevent a life-changing accident. Thankfully, this time, everyone was safe.

Austin, Texas. I move from the right lane to the left after the pickup pulls out. When it subsequently moves into the left lane, I move back right to avoid it.
Once we were side by side, the driver gave me the finger.
