Event PUNCHER SIGHTING

I was just at the 7 Eleven on Dewey/Barnard and he was lingering out in the streets looking menacing. Beware!! It looked like he was lingering between the card shop and the alley

EDIT i spoke with him and confirmed that he is marcus. I showed him this post but he did not seem to understand and made groaning gestures towards me. I did bring him and drink and food as a welcoming gesture.

Fucks sake how is marcus out. He last went in for assault on something like 3 officers after stealing a tip jar from a business or something. That was only a couple months ago. He needs to be in a residential facility. He has no support system, he is dangerous to the community and he has none of what he needs to survive without assistance which is what has led to this continual crime from him. He is obviously severely mentally unwell. He deserves help. He deserves proper diagnosis. He deserves medications. He deserves to be in a facility getting the care he needs without access to the public.

I’m reading a book right now called “INSANE: America’s criminal treatment of mental illness.”
EDITED TO ADD: Author Alisa Roth

Worth the read.
We are not doing what we need to be doing to protect or support our citizens.

u/gremlinsbuttcrack Jul 07 '26

Fantastic! Im half way through my book now (the girl on the train, quick read), that's next on my list!

2

u/Born-Indication-655 Jul 07 '26

According to your book, what is the solution for this problem of someone who repeatedly assaults innocent and unsuspecting people?

35

u/AnachronIst_13 Jul 07 '26

I would say, first, read the book - it is an extremely detailed review of the journey of various people with mental illness being thrown into the justice system instead of any appropriate healthcare system. “Whats the answer” is the wrong question. A good faith understanding of the issue is required before you can ask it.

It often goes like this: person has an undiagnosed or untreated mental health condition, but is repeatedly denied resources or assistance (or both do not exist). Then person commits a single often petty crime, and thus begins their legal/incarceration path from which they rarely escape.

Once incarcerated, jail/prison employees and conditions exacerbate the mental health issue due to poor treatment and insufficient skills and accommodations, even further complicated by jail workers not being permitted to even know medical diagnosis due to HIPPA, so they also cant even understand what conditions inmates have to even hope to know how to treat them (medically, but also, literally how to engage on a safe base level).

Powerful companies profit off of incarcerated people, and society often blames individuals while simultaneously denying anything in the way of helpful solutions, so there is very little interest in improving conditions or care.

Prisons end up actually replacing mental health asylums, and people who might otherwise have had shelter away from society were ejected onto the streets where the might hurt civilians.

“Whats the solution” is not a good faith question - this is an extremely complicated SET of problems that requires change at multiple levels.

“Lock this guy up indefinitely” sounds like the least-resistance path, but his crimes often arent serious enough to result in conditions where he can be held in a way that is not both more dangerous for him AND everyone else once he is released.

Sorry some problems don’t have easy answers.
Read the book. Its not very long. I’m about halfway through now.

Also: I work on the architecture/design side of corrections.

u/AgeMysterious123 Jul 07 '26

$10 says that wasn’t actually interested in your response 😭

26

u/AnachronIst_13 Jul 07 '26

Ah, but it wasn’t really for him/her, was it?

It was for anyone who might be reading and see something that might make them think “I have a responsibility towards my community” and “I wonder if more people knew this, if it might help us work together towards a productive solution.”

A good faith effort requires just that: a little effort!

-5

u/Born-Indication-655 Jul 07 '26

Ill take your $10 because im very interested in not having to worry about innocent people being attacked

6

u/Britirish Jul 07 '26

Except you’ve just quite clearly proven their point, you don’t give a shite about what they have to say you just want to argue and shout into an echo chamber.

-9

u/Born-Indication-655 Jul 07 '26

Nope. They said a lot but didnt offer up any specific solutions. No substance. Maybe they need to read a different book on the subject...

I was, and am, interested but dont waste my time with a bunch of blowing wind

4

u/chaos_walking_ Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Clearly the book is about bringing to light the inefficiencies/problems plaguing the US mental health system. The person you replied to never said they were going to offer solutions. Instead they offered their opinion (based on info from the book) that the problem of violent attacks is a multifaceted problem, and stated what some of those facets are, as well as their opinion that we need to better understand all of the facets of issues before asking what a solution might be. Yes, they couldve said "im not sure how to resolve this, but here is where resolution BEGINS: with a detangling of some problems that occur at different points in society and how they lead to the problem (attacks on street) you are conciously worried about", but most people give others the benefit of the doubt that theyre giving their best response possible and dont need such a blatant disclaimer. If youre truly worried about violent attacks in your neighborhood, maybe dont brush off another neigbor who is on your side, also worried about the issue and engaging with you on it, as having "no substance" in what they have to passionately say about it when they clearly were saying something of sunbstance, just not the kind of substance you most wanted.

2

u/Britirish Jul 07 '26

Ok so what’s your solution to the mental health crisis then?

-10

u/Born-Indication-655 Jul 07 '26

All of that writing could have been addressing the solutions (nuanced as they may be) but it was a lot of posturing and dancing around the subject.

When you have solutions ill be interested.

12

u/AnachronIst_13 Jul 07 '26

I’m sorry you feel that it is only everyone elses responsibility to understand the problems in our society and spoonfeed you custom tailored solutions for you to judge.

The solution involved your participation.

THE SOLUTION involves change at multiple levels, across multiple agencies, and restructuring of multiple systems.

When you’re interested, you can be a part of the solution.

-2

u/Born-Indication-655 Jul 07 '26

Oh man, you are missing the point.

You announced that you are reading a book on the subject I genuinely asked if you have discovered solutions You havent discovered any or wont/cant share them for some odd reason.

12

u/Britirish Jul 07 '26

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of books and academic writing if you think their sole purpose is to provide simple solutions to complex problems

-5

u/gremlinsbuttcrack Jul 07 '26

The solution is residential treatment as stated plainly. Stfu.

5

u/Born-Indication-655 Jul 07 '26

They didnt say this at all. STFU? You are an angry creep...

12

u/sockchairlamp Jul 07 '26

While I appreciate the compassion, mental health support cannot be forced upon people. Have you ever worked in a residential treatment facility? I have. I don’t know this man so I have no idea what would help him, if anything. However, there are many individuals who do not accept mental health help in any of the current ways our society has to offer it. Even if someone is remanded to residential treatment, they can refuse treatment and leave. Sometimes, there is not a viable solution and there isn’t always someone to blame.

16

u/NormalMammoth4099 Jul 07 '26

He is in desperate need of help, the community deserves protection from his behavior. What can possibly be done to prevent a needless horror result? Thank you for your kindness to Marcus.

13

u/gremlinsbuttcrack Jul 07 '26

Exactly! There's residential facilities he can be mandated to reside in by a court. Why that hasn't been done is beyond me. He is suffering and the community is suffering as a result. No one needs to suffer. We have things in place. They just need to provide it to him already.

37

u/Mediocre_Garage987 Jul 07 '26

Honestly yeah we have no idea how this man would be if he had medication appropriate to whatever's going on, plus good sleep. Marcus could be any of us.

9

u/queenlizbef Jul 07 '26

Idk who is downvoting you for that compassionate comment

4

u/Mediocre_Garage987 Jul 07 '26

I would guess people who are hurting too and projecting in such a way that they feel shame for Marcus' behavior. It's sad to know they wouldn't forgive themselves if they were in his position.

13

u/gremlinsbuttcrack Jul 07 '26

Idk why this is being downvoted, it's the same as what I said. I agree wholly. He's very obviously someone who has been "left behind." There's no question he is a case of severe untreated mental disorder. So so many of us struggle with mental health, but we have access to care. Now I'm not saying he would have been the mayor on another path in life, but surely he wouldn't have become the public nuisance known for assaulting strangers.

-1

u/Mediocre_Garage987 Jul 07 '26

Totally agree. On our own, most of us average out to being average, and if we're extremely unusual in a positive or negative way it almost always has something to do with the community around us.

-18

u/heretics-get-out Jul 07 '26

speak for yourself.

2

u/queenlizbef Jul 07 '26

Brother man, if you don’t realize you’re one accident away from being Marcus, I don’t know what to tell you.

7

u/Britirish Jul 07 '26

You’re absolutely right. I was a high achiever, D1 athlete, whole future ahead of me, up until not very long ago when I had my first manic episode (thanks, Lexapro) and psychosis pretty much destroyed my entire life. I’m trying to get my shite together and even with an absolutely fantastic support system - like, more than anyone could possibly ask for - it’s really fecking hard and the system makes it so much harder than it has to be. If I didn’t have the connections and privilege that I do, I’d probably be wandering about someplace screaming at the sky - I don’t think I’d be violent, but who really knows in that state? Everyone is just one misstep or nudge in the wrong direction away from a complete nightmare of a life.

-7

u/heretics-get-out Jul 07 '26

you are deluded.

8

u/StoneyLasagnax Jul 07 '26

I do feel for him !!!

43

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Maybe I’m late to this but now that I work in the city, does anyone have a picture of the “puncher” and or the “drop kicker” just so I know what they look like?

28

u/Gandalf2000 Jul 07 '26

13

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

And he’s obviously a puncher. Looks at those knucks

7

u/Muppetz3 Jul 07 '26

Those are def some big calluses

2

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Perfect thank you. Haven’t seen him yet. Anyone for the kicker of drops?

12

u/Gandalf2000 Jul 07 '26

I've never heard of the drop kicker until this thread. I thought it was just a joke until you asked, so idk.

3

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Roger that. I guess we’ll see but thank you for your information. I work security at the transit center but don’t live in the city so any info and pics is super helpful to me

27

u/eChucker889 Jul 07 '26

Greece is totally out of his usual area. What gives?

7

u/20Bubba03 Jul 07 '26

Can I ask who the hell Marcus is and why we should be concerned about him?

10

u/Due_Reindeer_3882 Jul 07 '26

The pic linked shows what appears to be hospital ID bracelets, so “help” has been at least attempted. This is very sad

14

u/NormalMammoth4099 Jul 07 '26

That pic was from last year. This has been happening for years.

30

u/ShadySphincter0 Jul 07 '26

I hope he runs into “the dropkicker” sometime soon

7

u/Snot_Says Jul 07 '26

Or the street shitter(s).

3

u/b0nghits4breakfast Jul 07 '26

The dropkicker sounds much less threatening. I feel like I could take a drop kick

17

u/Phrostybacon Jul 07 '26

Y’know, as a psychologist, there really is a huge problem with how we treat folks with SPMIs (severe persistent mental illnesses). When I worked at a hospital in central NY, one of the most common discharge plans was to send patients to homeless shelters. It’s a horrible situation.

Truth be told, there is “marginal homelessness,” which accounts for people sleeping in their cars, who can’t pay their bills, and who desperately need economic support. Then there is “chronic homelessness.” Chronic homelessness is more about untreated, or treatment resistant, severe persistent mental illness and poly substance use disorder. It is not a popular thing to say, but most chronically homeless people will never fully recover and we as a society need to reintroduce humane asylums to house these people to keep both the person and the community safe.

JFK had good intentions (and felt guilty about what his family did to his sister), but deinstitutionalization has been a total failure. Is it really preferable to have a clearly very sick man living on the street while everyone is afraid of him? I’d much prefer there be hospitals that could house him and work to give him some sort of meaningful life. Three healthy meals a day, programming, leisure time, someplace safe to sleep, cool in the summer, warm in the winter.

I’m sorry but this is so funny 😭 on that same note NEVER do that shit again pls

4

u/SomewhereIdRatherBe 14621 Jul 07 '26

Not this again 😩😩

18

u/react-dnb Jul 07 '26

There has GOT to be someone larger than this dude who knows about this dude and is willing to punch the puncher to stop punching.

64

u/hclarke15 Jul 07 '26

I don’t think one punch can take mental illness away from someone

21

u/KarmaCommando_ Ontario Jul 07 '26

You could beat him to a pulp and it would make no difference. This is not a man who learns a lesson. He's severely mentally unwell. He needs to be institutionalized and nothing short of that will make a difference.

3

u/react-dnb Jul 07 '26

True. I wish he could get the help he needs. I just feel terrible for anyone who crosses his path and is subjected to his abuse.

6

u/Muppetz3 Jul 07 '26

Or he will go to punch someone who is carrying.

New York Criminal Procedure Law Section 510.10 (Bail Reform Law of 2019)

New York Criminal Procedure Law Section 530.20 (Least Restrictive Conditions Mandate)

New York Mental Hygiene Law Section 9.39 (Involuntary Admission Standard)

New York Mental Hygiene Law Section 9.60 (Kendra's Law Restrictions)

New York Criminal Procedure Law Article 730 (Competency Restrictions)

All the above listed laws and procedures are applicable to this specific individual and their long history of criminal behavior. This is not a failure of the state, or a failure of application of law. This is the result of voting by the general public and who they chose to represent them.

I understand the sentiment behind having concern or pity for this individuals circumstances and mental state, but they do not need handouts from people in the form of food and water. They need for people to vote on changing the laws listed above, and removing the elected representatives that have allowed them.

We must do better.

4

100% agree with you

It's July in Rochester!

7

u/UsernamesSuck33 South Wedge Jul 07 '26

Definitely, people with mental health problems are strictly in Rochester and only come out in the summer

1

u/Several_Resolve_5754 Jul 07 '26

I had a way more aggressive experience with one last night, bothered me multiple times trying to get engagement over some trade scam. Usually they'll leave you alone if you don't respond or say no.

1

u/Nstraclassic Jul 07 '26

I mean mental health awareness is part of the city's main identity... mentally ill flock to rochester for the number of mental health nonprofits in the area. All that grant money cant fix people who dont want to be fixed though unfortunately

8

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

What’s that got to do with this guy? Mental illness doesn’t have a season, you know.

3

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

I mean, these 2 commenters - the hot weather does get things going. You’re right, there isn’t a “season” per se. But something about the hot weather gets under peoples skin and they act out

-7

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

I mean, you. You have no idea what you’re blabbering about. Try learning things before getting all flustered.

5

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Cute little mockery there but maybe you should. Hot weather causes people to act out. I’m blabbering about shit I’ve seen and dealt with. Is it all calm in the cold? No. But heat makes people uncomfortable and hot and irritated. Which then leads to more aggressive and or violent confrontations. Check your shit before you try to check me.

4

u/TomatoWitty4170 Jul 07 '26

I’m on page with u! More car accidents / road rage / insane behavior when temps increase. It does sometbing to people’s judgement. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

2

u/Live_Perspective3603 Jul 07 '26

Exactly. Ask anyone who works in emergency services, medical or otherwise. More shit happens during hot weather. My dad, a NYC cop, told me that decades ago and I've seen it myself in my years working in health care.

-4

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

You deserve being mocked, because you only have anecdotal opinions. As though you can interpret grownup reality using only your own limited experience and making absolute claims you can’t defend using facts and reality.

5

u/TomatoWitty4170 Jul 07 '26

People with certain conditions—such as Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, or mood disorders—may be especially sensitive to heat, though responses vary from person to person.

0

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

True, but they also may not be.

1

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Limited experience? Anecdotal opinions? You think I don’t know and can’t see what I deal with? Alright there superhero. Why don’t you show m me some non anecdotal opinions, aka facts, that back up your opinions?

0

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

Anecdotes and limited experience. You know nothing about mental health treatment or life in cities. OK, Wolverine, why don’t you show me some learning beyond your obviously limited experience. You haven’t, because you can’t.

So you won’t. You’ll just continue crying about being challenged over your bad public opinions.

-4

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

Check yourself before popping off again, kid. Oh, I’m uncomfortable with city living and grownup reality! Get a grip on yourself.

1

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Who in the hell said I’m uncomfortable? I said it’d be nice to know the riff raff around there. I like knowing the ins and outs. Come at me with some real stuff, shit head. You don’t know me and your little maga snake shit means nothing to me. Try again, big man

-1

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

You did. It’d be nice, but nice isn’t reality. What you like doesn’t rule the world. Come at me with some real stuff. I know you by your poor opinions, and you need to look closer at my avatar lest you be a complete magat-like thinker. Try me again, li’l fella!

-1

u/Old_Prompt_4982 Jul 07 '26

Ah there it is. There’s the retard in your brain. And my poor opinions. Sure. We’re all allowed to be stupid at points in our lives and here’s yours. You can keep tough talking and doing all that the libs do, that’s fine. I’m cool either way. Yall talking your piece so cool, that’s fine. You be dumb and sheltered and think the government is going to come down spend all this money to fix shit when… nope. Keep your head in the sand, big dawg. Talk your talk, that’s ok. And take words how you want them to sound like, it’s what yall do. At the end of the day, heat fucks up where you live and not where I live. And then they just keep releasing them onto your streets with no punishment. That’s your life. Not mine. If you’re cool with that, ok.

1

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

That’s a lot of meaningless babble to admit you’ve made a complete ass of yourself here today.

The relationship between hot weather and violent crime is well-established.

1

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

No one said it’s not. But there are always gray areas that morons are incapable of admitting to or comprehending.

2

u/icantfindadangsn North Winton Village Jul 07 '26

That's not what's happening here.

You presume that because they are talking about a well established effect and not acknowledging the mental illness of the person, they're trying to say this behavior is attributable solely to the weather. In fact, this was initially a silly joke that you interpreted seriously. Does this inability to comprehend humor make you a moron? Probably not. But you do seem like you have a keen ability to notice error in others without noticing/admitting to it in yourself which fits your definition.

Also, why do you feel the need to just start name-calling someone rather than explaining like a nice human? If someone is a bitch, let that be their problem, but you start acting like a bitch too and it's your problem.

0

u/Neat_Dragonfruit5794 Jul 07 '26

Yeah, it’s what’s happening here. That’s a whole lot of verbose nonsense weakly trying to convince educated grownups that it’s not grownup reality, moronic angry child.
