Discussion Important Reminder: OPSEC and External Recruitment Communities

Hi everyone,

We have recently seen some interest in external Discord servers and social media groups focused on candidate preparation (CBAT, DAA, OASC, etc.). While we appreciate that the recruitment process is demanding and that peer support is invaluable, I want to take a moment to address some serious security concerns regarding these platforms.

Why we are restricting the promotion of unvetted external groups:

OPSEC and Data Aggregation: Many of these platforms are completely unvetted. While a post sharing your own CPC date might seem harmless in isolation, aggregating that information across a community of 800+ people creates a clear, mapped picture of candidate flow, training throughput, and recruitment timelines. This is valuable information that should not be centralized in unverified spaces.

Lack of Identity Verification: External servers do not have the mechanisms to verify the identity of their members. This makes it incredibly easy for unauthorized actors to lurk, gather intelligence, or attempt to socially engineer information from genuine candidates.

Protection of Your Personal Data: Sharing specific dates (CPCs, interview boards, start dates) on open or unvetted platforms bypasses the protection of official, secure recruitment channels. Please remain vigilant about what you share and where you share it.

Going Forward:

To maintain the security of our community and the safety of our applicants, we will be limiting the promotion of unvetted external recruitment groups on this subreddit.

Please continue to use official Defence Recruitment channels, your AFCO, or the official candidate portals for any information regarding your specific application or training pipeline. If you have questions about test dynamics, feel free to ask them here—but please do so without sharing personal identifying information, specific dates, or private correspondence.

Stay safe, maintain your PERSEC, and good luck with your applications.

OPSEC/PERSEC - a reminder

I get it, you're excited to go to CPC/Raleigh/Dartmouth etc., but please stop sharing the dates, locations and times that these are happening and the fact that you're going. All of these are OPSEC (Operational Security) and PERSEC (Personal Security) breaches.

The dates of CPC/New Entry are not public knowledge and all it takes is one motivated individual to scan through this sub-reddit and they would, if it wasn't for the moderators, be able to piece together all the little bits of information here that's being posted in order to work out exactly when CPC/intakes are happening and potentially interfere.

To be clear, New Entry intakes and CPCs are particularly vulnerable as it involves a lot of people who are OPSEC/PERSEC clueless, and it presents an opportunity to infiltrate/interfere.

Moving forward, any discussion about dates of events will be removed. If you absolutely need to discuss it, use vague terms like "next month", "some time in January" or simply "upcoming". Those who are in the know will know what you're talking about!

Also stop trying to create WhatsApp or Discord groups for New Entry/CPC. I get that you're doing it with the best intentions, but how on Earth will you vet those wishing to join the group? How will you know that their intentions are honest? How do they know your intentions are honest? Simple answer is that they don't. Only join WhatsApp (or similar) groups with people you've actually met or have been introduced to via the AFCOs. Anything else is asking for trouble.

Discussion TIL that George V ended in practice (in theory it can still be revoked) the forfeiture of the Victoria Cross in 1920, saying that even a VC recipient who committed murder, should be able to wear it as they were hanged.

Question Aircraft Handler wait times

Morning! After failing my CBAT to go in as a controller my second choice is handler, I did a lot more research into the role and I have some family history with it and it’s something I’m looking at and really can see myself doing it for a career, I know the role is a bit oversubscribed as my recruiter said so but I didn’t think it would be too long of a wait - online it says 6 months to two years waiting for the job role and I was wondering how accurate are those numbers? I have my CPC in a month and been told apparently they’ll give me more insight then. As said just wondering if anyone can tell me how long the actual wait time is and if I should maybe think about going back over my DAA results and look at the roles offered if handler is genuinely going to take this long.

Recruitment Process after DAA.

I’ve recently passed my DAA for the role of Logistics officer (thank god!), however since then I haven’t had much contact from my recruiter, and the RITS site hasn’t posted any new information. I’ve messaged the recruiter and attempted to call him a couple times but unfortunately no luck (as I work full time currently it’s quite difficult getting time to speak to them). Is it worth contacting my local AFCO for more information? Additionally, when I first applied and spoke to my recruiter, I said I was not interested in the possibility of being a submariner, however since then I’ve re-considered. Would it be possible to update this on my application? Thanks.

Recruitment Monday Press Gang: Ask Your Recruitment Questions

Thinking of joining the Royal Navy? Already applied? Not sure what to expect?

This is your weekly thread to ask anything about:

  • The application process
  • Aptitude testing (minus DAA results!)
  • Interviews and medicals
  • Initial training (Raleigh, BRNC)

Serving members are encouraged to pop in and offer insight too.

Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question — if you’re thinking it, someone else is too.

Question Do you ever feel fully rested when on a submarine?

Thinking about joining the Royal Navy and leaning towards subs, from what I’ve read when on deployment you do 6on 6off and from the outside that just sounds awful.

I currently do shift work (Morning, nights, afternoons) rotating every week so I’m pretty used to weird hours but 6on 6off just sounds awful, not being able to get 8 hours continues sleep for months on end.

Is it not that bad when on the sub due to no sunlight or anything?

Any answers would be appreciated.

Question Phone time?

My partner has just started her phase 1 basic training this Monday - now Saturday evening - and I haven’t heard from her since the Monday evening.

I totally understand how busy and exhausting it is but I just wanted to know that she was getting on alright - quick message.

Is it normal for phone time to be taken away so much or is it that she’ll be exhausted and got more stuff to do in that time.

Question How long after CPC did you get your Raleigh date?

Got my Enhanced CPC in mid-November. I’m already medically cleared and hold SC, so assuming I pass CPC, what’s the realistic likelihood of getting a Raleigh start date fairly soon afterwards?

For anyone who’s gone through recently, especially AA applicants, how long was it between passing CPC and actually starting at Raleigh?

Could I realistically be looking at Late November/December, or is it more likely to be later than that?

Just trying to get a rough idea for planning. I know it depends on intake dates and availability considering the Christmas holiday as well.

Question SC, DBS and Raleigh

Hey guys, I have searched through the forum to see any similar questions but can’t find what i’m looking for.
Recently passed my CPC however cannot start Raleigh as my recruiter hadn’t completed my SC application. I finally submitted it over a week ago and just wondered how long everyone roughly has waited for theirs to come through? I understand it differs depending on the person but a rough average would be great as I would like to know what timeline I am expecting.
Also my enhanced DBS has been pending for nearly 4 weeks now. If anyone else has had the same thing how long do we usually wait for this too please?
I’m wanting to start fairly soon but obviously being help up due to this last admin. Not sure if end of November/ December is sounding unrealistic?
Thank you :)

As soon as I applied to the navy I have been excited and experienced no nerves. During Cpc I wasn’t nervous at all but now Raleigh is coming up and I’m beginning to feel less excitement but more fearing it. Can anyone help me out on this and just give me info about raleigh from recent perspectives

Advice I can’t make my mind up

I have been obsessed with the navy/ marines for as long as I can remember and I’m now 18. And I simply can’t decide between the two. I’ve always wanted to be in the marines and join as an officer. But due to a lower back injury that I’ve had since April I’m not quite sure it’s possible anymore. Even though I’m fit enough to pass all of the requirements for the marines I feel like as I have the back problem already that would really hurt me down the line if I chose marines.

I’ve been advised to join the navy as an officer and down the line if I want to try out for a transfer to the marines and if then I don’t make it through I have the navy job to fall back on.

What I’m trying to say is that do I go for the marines and if I get injured go to hunter troop or do I join the navy and just let it go away on its own. I hope I’ve made sense. Any advice is welcome 👍

Question Confused About Next Steps

Hi all,

I was lucky enough today to receive a call from my recruiter that I had passed my DAA for an Engineering Officer role. However, I am confused as to when I would choose which profession I would like to enter into as I would like to join as a Marine Engineering Officer Submariner. Would I need to message my recruiter with this information?

Thank you

Question How many attempts at pilot do you REALLY get

Hey all I not long ago failed my cbat for pilot by a mere 4 points,

Very annoying for sure but what can you do, I was wondering how many attempts do you realistically get at pilot obviously the main concern is age cut off at 20 as I am now in theory I could reapply every year if I fail aib or chat but surely at one point or another you should stop trying?

I guess really what I'm trying to guage is when I should apply for something else because the pilot thing isn't gonna work

Advice Preparation for officer training

Any help with prepping for HMS Raleigh and Dartmouth would be great.

My fitness is decent - doing 3 runs and 3 gym sessions a week, with body weight circuits mixed in.

Think I’m at a good standard there but wondering about the academic and admin side of things, i have just over a month and lots of free time right now.

Recruitment Applied Yesterday

Hi everyone.

I applied for Warfare Officer yesterday. Awaiting the DAA test. Just flicked through one without concentrating and got 62%. What should I be aiming for? Internet searches say 70-80%.

Endgame I am interested in joining the Special Boat Service. Would you recommend joining as a Warfare Officer or Royal Marines Officer?

Additionally I have glasses (left +0.5, right -0.75). Will this be an issue?

Thanks!
