SBU History: The legendary (and fully amplified) Crepitation Contests in the Union Auditorium (1970–1974)

Hey everyone, I was an undergrad at Stony Brook from 1970 to 1974, right when the Student Union first opened. I wanted to share a piece of real, unhinged campus lore from that era that seems to have vanished from the internet archives.

For two of my four years here, students organized a live, standing-room-only Crepitation Contest in the Union auditorium. It was packed way past fire-code capacity both times.

For context, it was based on the famous 1946 satirical underground comedy record about a world-championship flatulence match. The campus organizers committed to the bit 100% and turned it into an absolute masterpiece of live performance art:

  • The Setup: They hooked up a heavy-duty boom mic and blasted the entire "production" through a massive Marshall amplifier that shook the auditorium walls.
  • The Roster: They had contestants playing the characters from the record—Paul Boomer and Lord Windesmear—but they also added their own, like the "Sheik of Cheek."
  • The Costumes: One of the contestants wore a full wrestling singlet with gym shorts and a dramatic cape.
  • The Training Regimens: They did deadpan pre-match interviews asking the contestants about their athletic preparation, which apparently involved strict diets of raw onions and Coca-Cola.
  • The Official Review Booth: They used a big green slate chalkboard on stage for scoring. If a particular "production" was challenged as being illegal, the contestant and the judge would step behind the chalkboard. The audience could only see their lower legs and feet shifting tensely. After a few seconds of silent deliberation, the judge’s hand would dramatically reach out from behind the slate with an "OK" sign.

It was easily some of the funniest, most creative counterculture humor I experienced during my time at SBU.

Are there any other alumni from the early '70s on here who remember crowding into the auditorium for this? Or does anyone know if copies of The Statesman from '71–'74 still have the old flyers or write-ups for it?

They're throwing out books in the library

I heard that the library is getting rid of the silent area in north reading room, and they plan to throw the books out. Is it just me, or does that not feel right? Like yeah this campus doesn't have enough third spaces, but I find it hard to believe that the only option is to throw away a ton of books. Besides, I personally like studying in the quiet section, and all of them except for the one at nrr close really early. We live in a society😔 I'm not sure how true it is, but it better not be😭

This random ahh dude sped directly at my friend and I at the LIRR station then swerved off at the last second and placed his tires terribly (outside the lines). He then proceeded to walk directly towards us and when I reprimanded him for his subpar control of the wheel, he followed us to dominos and stared at us through the window as we ate our pizza. The pizza was really bad by the way. It was way too hot and I lost money playing Uno against my friend while we were waiting. Our pizza also came out late. We got the regular crust but I would recommend the new york style or even the thin crust or even going next door to subway where the food is far superior. Does anyone recognize this lad? Might be a little hard to see because I have lightly blurred his face. Need less assholes like this guy on campus.

Phy 125 with garf is so bad

we just did our midterm, we had 3 big questions with less than one hour. And the questions are just curveballs after curveballs, we were allowed cheat sheet, but most the important topics like friction and Fc i thought was gonna show never did. Instead we got unit vector and calculating earth’s circumference. Like bruh, most of my cheat sheet’s formula where’s even relevant. The only question that was easy was elevator pulley.

never take this class with graf.

even at the recitation many of us were questioning the professor if it took him this long to do the questions (like 50 min) , why should we be expected to do all that under 1 hour.

Proposal: New Title for Academic Mall

Hello all,

Calling the broad path between the SAC Loop and Admin the "Academic Mall" just sounds bad, and we need an alternative, especially as this is one of the most transited parts of campus (connecting Melville, Frey, Psych, Humanities, Staller, ESS, etc.)

From here on out, I would like you all to refer to this strip of land as:

The Shaft

If you think about it, it makes sense, as it connects the SAC to the Wang.

Thanks.

short rant about college

i’m a sophomore and yet i’m still struggling with college life even though it’s my second year. i’m falling behind my lectures, all of my missing assignments are piled up, i’m struggling with my mental health, and i’m not wealthy enough to go here. i have to prepare for midterms and at this point i’m studying for a decent grade, not my knowledge. i’m scared my gpa is going to be ruined because my depression got me to the point where i missed many important dues for some lectures. i don’t know what to do. i don’t even have any friends to talk to and my home is far away. life genuinely feels like prison. i feel like giving up

edit: i just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who took the time to read my post and share their advice and experiences! i honestly didn’t expect this many responses and i really appreciate every single one of them. i’ve been feeling extremely overwhelmed and discouraged lately, so hearing from people who have been through similar situations or are currently going through the same thing genuinely makes me feel less alone. i know i have a lot to work on and i’m trying my best to figure out how to get myself back on track. again, thank you all for being so kind and taking the time to respond. best of luck to all of you aswell ❤️

Selling/Buying Ebike + accessories for sale

Selling my new Setohet 26" Electric Bike + accessories for $300. Price negotiable!

Thought I'd use it for longer but I ended up moving outside biking distance from campus so I no longer need it. It's a great commuter/medium distance ebike. I used it to bike to campus every day and to go shopping at the local walmart/BJ’s/ stop shop + ride to the nearby beaches, aside from general commuting around campus. Bought it from walmart this August, here’s a link to the page: walmart listing link

Some specs:

  • Max speed: 22mph, (Even though the speedometer would say 28mph, the real speed I’ve registered at a speed trap was 22mph, don’t believe the walmart listing)
  • 10-13 miles comfortably on a single charge (again don’t believe the walmart listing)
  • Comes with 2 battery lock keys and a lanyard for them.
  • Battery capacity: 12 Amp Hours
  • Weight: ~50 lbs, Wheel type: 26”, Gears: 7 rear gears
  • Has 5 pedal assist modes and a full throttle mode as well
  • Comes with a front headlight, though its slightly weak and I removed the front glass so it would shine the road better.
  • Charger included obivously

I recently serviced the bike and tuned/tightened the brakes. Works really well and is just 3 months old at this point. I also tightened and greased the bike chain.

I’m including the follow brand new accessories:

  • A white bike helmet with a headlight and a rear warning light, 5 light modes, USB-C chargable (amazon listing for the same: amazon listing link)
  • Heavy bike lock chain
  • Phone holder for any size phone.
  • Bike pump

DM if interested.

I’m a freshmen, im applying I want to know my chances, I travel a lot and I know they like diversity I was wondering if I should mention that in the writing portion and if i get the interview

my resume right now is i have a job on campus with the food concessions so I work at ESD and the retail stores there and they place me in roth and other food places, I work with serving, preparing and handling food and swiping IDS. Iam part of hall council, im also part of the pre nursing society club, i have my life guard certification and CPR and AED certification so i feel like that would look good because i can help in case emergencies, and i have some volunteer experience but not much. also my grades are pretty good, so what are my chances are looking like and is there some stuff i shouldn’t include?

Also what are the interview question like? does anyone have a copy ? and can my boss be reccomandtion letter
