Here you can ask for and receive recommendations on everything from vets to daycare, car insurance to restaurants, outdoor activities to thrift stores.

Question Diabetic Dog Shelters

We said goodbye to our sweet girl yesterday. She was the best.

She struggled with diabetes and HATED the diabetic specific (low fat, high protein/fiber) food. Absolutely hated it. So, we tried all sorts of brands and types to try and find something she’d eat, to some mild success.

Anyways, now we have a ton of food! We’d like to donate it to a good cause. I’m not sure if any shelters or rescues specialize in diabetic dogs, so I figured I’d ask here.

Please scratch your pets for me. Pictures of Lillie included, of course.

Events & Meetups Salt Lake Book Festival

• Upvotes

The first annual Salt Lake Book Festival was today at the Gateway and it was so fun! They had a KRCL DJ playing some vibes, Fisher Brewing and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

It was a really good group of people, there were authors doing panels and readings and lots of vendors and books to buy.

This was a great event to support and really great people made it happen. I hope this event continues as I can’t wait to go back.

(PIP HAS BEEN FOUND AND RETURNED! A lovely neighbor a few blocks away kept him warm and safe overnight. we reunited thanks to Facebook! big fan of the Utah Lost & Found Pets groups! make sure to post there if you ever lose your baby too!)

(edit to add: he's an Italian Greyhound, 10lbs, fawn colored but very gray with age.)

last seen late Friday evening 10/16, in a neighborhood near 4700s/Redwood.

14ish years-old, doesn't see or hear the best so may or may not respond to his name, "Pip" or his favorite word, "chicken."

kind of skittish, but not unfriendly. just a very-likely confused and hungry old man with few teeth and a crooked tail.

he also has kidney disease so we need to get him home to his prescription food.

Something Wicked SLC Halloween Pop Up

I just wanted to share our experience at Something Wicked in Salt Lake City because it was honestly pretty disappointing.

We made a reservation ahead of time, only to be told when we arrived that our reservation wasn’t valid because they were hosting a crafting event and reservations were supposed to have been turned off. They were eventually able to seat us because one of the crafting tables happened to leave early.

We then waited 25 minutes without any service or acknowledgment from anyone. At that point, we went to the bar to ask if we were supposed to order there. The bartender told us they currently didn’t have any servers but said she would be right over to help us.
We waited another 20 minutes. During that time, we watched people who arrived at the bar after us get served while we continued to sit there waiting.

After a total of 45 minutes, we finally gave up and left without ever being served. What made the experience even more frustrating was that no one acknowledged how long we’d been waiting, checked on us, or apologized for the delay.

I understand that events can get busy and staffing issues happen, but if you’re accepting reservations, there should be some level of communication and customer service when things aren’t going as planned. We made the effort to plan ahead and show up for our reserved time, only to spend 45 minutes feeling completely ignored.

I was really looking forward to checking this place out for Halloween, so it was disappointing to leave with such a bad impression. Has anyone else had a similar experience here?

Local News Tropical Storm Rachel brought Utah plenty of rain — and ocean birds

I couldn't believe it when I heard Utah's big storm this week also blew in OCEAN BIRDS. So as a KUER reporter, I called up a birder. He said this is the first time on verified record storm petrels have been seen in Utah. Pretty wild. But also sad because he said they'll probably all die :( https://www.kuer.org/science-environment/2026-10-15/tropical-storm-rachel-utah-lake-birds-storm-petrels

Saw this in Sugar house today. Just because you have the best donuts in California. It doesn’t mean you have the best donuts in Utah. Just another reminder to support local.

I field quite a few questions these days from friends who moved out of state years ago or never lived here at all. The questions usually go something like --> "What's up with Utah?"

My replies usually go something like --> "why are you asking me? We're all suffering from permanent WHIPLASH here! Besides all places have their problems, don't shame Utah. Your state is...(enter defensive, hyperbolic, completely reasonable insult here)". 😆

Recommendations SLCC Childcare Voucher — Can a nephew qualify if you’re his caregiver?

Hi everyone!
I’m planning to return to SLCC in Spring 2027 and have been researching their childcare voucher program.

I’m a mom to an infant, and I also care for my young nephew. I’m trying to arrange childcare for both children during the hours I’ll be attending classes.
I understand SLCC offers childcare assistance to eligible students, but I’m having trouble finding information about whether the voucher can cover a child who isn’t your biological or legally adopted child.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where they were caring for a niece, nephew, or another relative?

I’m particularly wondering:
Does SLCC require the child to be your legal dependent?

Would a notarized parental authorization stating me as the caregiver allow me to arrange his childcare, be sufficient?

Has anyone successfully applied for the voucher as a relative caregiver without formal legal guardianship?

I plan to contact SLCC directly to confirm their requirements, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has firsthand experience.

Thank you so much!

Question UTA Bike Lockers

My bike ride to the station is a little long, and I’m worried about trying to do it early in the morning in the dark during bad weather. My ride to work on the other side of my commute is shorter and easier, so I’m considering signing up for a UTA bike lockers.

Does anyone have any experience using the UTA bike lockers at the TRAX and FrontRunner stations? Good or bad experiences?

ADHD doctor SLC

Hello! I finally have health insurance again and need help finding a doc in Salt Lake that perscribes Adderall. I have been on it for years but recently moved to Park City and was uncovered until recently.

Does anyone have a doc/clinic they recommend? Preferably one that doesn't drug test. I am a THC user and cannot get a med card due to work requirements.

Thank you!

Discussion SL County District Attorney opinions

I recently moved up to Salt Lake after being in Utah county for college for a few years (originally from out of state), and so I am voting in Salt Lake for the first time. I’m having trouble finding enough information on Kent Davis to really form an opinion for this SLCo district attorney race, and I’m wondering if there is anyone with additional sources or personal anecdotes to help me decide what to do here.

For context, I’m a registered Democrat, and my ideology is pretty much normie lib. I will vote blue no matter who at the federal and state level right now, but I do recognize that party politics can break down a bit when you are at the local level (ie there’s no republican or democratic way to fix a pothole, etc.). Although I do pretty much end up with a straight ticket ballot anyways, I genuinely try to be thoughtful and do my research for these races.

From what I can tell, Sim Gill is not the most popular, and with good reason. I was especially concerned to hear about his handling of plea deals for repeat DV offenders. Kent Davis seems fine enough based on his campaign website and the SL trib voter guide, but he was in Fed Soc in law school and is endorsed by Gov Cox and others who I dislike.

So, especially for the people who have lived in and voted in SLCo for much longer than me— how are you thinking about this race? What am I missing that I need to think about?

Who’s Your Favorite Whatever-er in SLC?

I keep a list of service providers and businesses to refer to clients, which means it’s mostly home improvement/ maintenance people (plumbers, handymen, etc) but I also like to be able to recommend other things too if people need, all the way out to tattooers, dance studios, etc.

Who’s a really great Salt Lake business or service provider you had an awesome experience with and want other people to know about? Nonprofit resources are also cool!
