Local Politics - Ontario North Shore Tribal Council responds to Rowswell's comments

Your employer issuing a news release 10 days before the election that denounces public comments you made and said that you need to stop using their name while campaigning doesn't speak well to your character and is a massive red flag for voters. https://www.sootoday.com/2026-municipal-election-news/north-shore-tribal-council-responds-to-rowswells-comments-12901592

Miscellaneous Motels With Decent Monthly Rates (Other Than The Algonquin)

Are there any others in town you would recommend? The Algonquin seems nice, but I don't want to worry about my car all night

Failing that, are there any condos that would rent out a secure-ish parking spot to a non-resident?

New to Town/Meeting New People Any online gamers ?

Looking for online gaming friends. I play battlefield 6, arc raiders, red dead 2 and a few other games. If anyone's interested in online gaming I'd love to play together.

I work full-time so I don't play a lot, a few hours in the evening and on weekends.

Ferries were the only way until the bridge was opened. Good article on the long history of the boats that crossed between the Twin Saults.

Local Politics - Ontario Problems paying speeding tickets online. Help. SSM ON

I dont live in the Soo but I was pulled over driving through St. Joe's. In order to pay my fine online, I'm required to write the "File Number" but there is no file number on the ticket.

There's an "Offense number" but it doesn't have enough numbers and doesn't work when I try to submit it.

Has this happened to anyone else? What do I do?

Miscellaneous Anyone spot the fireball over town earlier this morning?

Post image

I was hanging out at Topsail Island getting footage of the ships, when I noticed a bright white light streak over town. It broke up into a couple pieces as it burned up, and there might have been some visible smoke!

It would have come from right to left, well above the two apartment buildings. The leaves on the tree partly blocked my view as it streaked by. Really wish I had a camera rolling when it happened..

Miscellaneous Bike Repair Workshop

Anyone know of any organizations that would be interested in a simple bike repair workshop? It would mostly be a flat fix workshop, but I could potentially go into other simple things like adjusting brakes and gears depending on interest

No cost

Travel/Tourism Advice - Ontario Can I get tourist merch for the Soo!

Dear all, I checked past posts but didn't see anything - are there any confirmed spots/businesses where I might buy t-shirts or other stuff specifically naming Sault Ste Marie? I am visiting with a friend and I want to grab some cute things to commemorate our trip if I can. Thanks!

SSM Ontario Moving/Living Advice Should I build a life in Soo?

Hello all! I'm a 28M. I've been saving up for a starter modest house and planning to buy one here. My lender has approved me for a 200k house but I don't think I will stay in Soo for the rest of my life. Since I'm still single and don't know when I can get my own family, a starter house idea sounds attractive. My plan is simple, buy a house, live a single life until marriage, then we can decide to continue to stay or move somewhere else. The house can act as a rental place if we want work/live in other places. Does my plan sound too reckless? I feel like I don't actually have any plan at all lol. Thanks for reading.

Sault College My Soo Tattoo

Post image
125 Upvotes

Met someone from the Soo in Brugge last week and as a result I couldn't stop thinking about Mr Leishman. He was my grade 8 teacher at Aweres. He organized a fishing tournament for our class at John Island that year, which is one of my fondest childhood memories. He was a major influence for me.

I caught my first brook trout and shot my first duck, a drake wood duck from a canoe in the Root River.

I got a tattoo the other day in Antwerp from an Italian man I immediately trusted. We shot the shit and listened to the Scorpions and Thin Lizzy while he worked. @ironchild.tattoo

To everyone who I went to school, played ball, hitch hiked, buzzbombed for pinks, skied, dirt biked, bush-partied, piled in for Taco Bell runs, shared beers with at every bar in town using the worst fake ids ever, worked, snowmachined, cruisied around, listened to metal, swam, snuck into the Dunn on their picture day identifying as members of the Tragically Hip, went hunting, watched Chris Simon and Denny Lambert play, smelted at midnight and canoed with.....

Thank you so much, this tattoo reminds me of all of you.

Love you guys.

Local Politics - Ontario I have some challenges because of how I look here....

I love the sault overall, it has it's challenges but those seem to be overall Ontario and even extended to the rest of Canada economically. I like getting out when I can, have some friends, we got a fantastic water front too!

I don't know how I can go about this but I visually stand out in a crowd and that upsets people. It's safe enough right? No one's gonna start something with me just trying to get a coffee or something right? (I get people taking photos of me thinking I didn't catch them and men shadowbox if they see me waiting in line just in case I didn't know they could fight I guess. Just trying to get a timmies) I'm originally from Toronto, blended right in didn't even think I would stand out here.

EDIT: To paint here I'm 6'5 and stick out visually to the point people feel the need to casually shadowbox in a way that is not a fast traditional shadowboxing workout, I have been confronted on wearing women's clothing while it is men's clothing and large (men's sweaters, shawls, tank tops as much as I support wearing anything anyone wants, I simply am still wearing men's clothing, I'm tall, not in drag and I apologize for the confusion, that being said clothing in this size is generally men's, even titled as such) Who's gonna look at me and think good things if things aren't going good for them? Economically it's not good here either it could be just that some people are having a bad time, I got my struggles too. I'll be as aware as I can, I do think that "Maybe they can handle themselves" should be the first thought people have if they need to do something about me or anyone when it's not the first thought, and I don't think I'm anything anyone should feel they have to deal with. I'm not doing anything to earn that apprehension. I don't react I don't feed it it's a thing this city has though.

Three people who are elderly have also said I should be knocked down a peg since I've moved here in two years, one was also in a tim hortons line. It's just hard, I'd rather not deal with it, I know that's not going to change but seeing reddit and what I've experienced it looks conducive to post about. It's lonely here, flat out isolation but we've all been mitigating that since the pandemic. I have modeled for fashion but retired...gosh 15 years back?

EDIT EDIT: And the friends I have made are wonderful, and if I'm doing my own thing but someone just nods or smiles that kicks off my day! I should post about that as well but getting confronted or contented with when I'm just passing through happens more often still.

Knock me down a peg!!

Miscellaneous Research study seeking people with lived experiences of drug use in Ontario

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am a PhD student at the University of Toronto conducting a research study to explore the barriers to harm reduction service use in Ontario.

I am seeking adults 18+ living in Ontario who have used substances recreationally in the last 6 months and are aware of harm reduction programming but have NOT used harm reduction services.

Participation of this study is voluntary. It will involve a demographic survey completion and a 60–90-minute confidential interview (zoom, phone, or in person – your choice!). A $20 gift card will be provided for your time.

If you or someone you know would be interested in participating, please share! Your experiences, opinions and perspective can work to improve harm reduction services in Ontario.

You can learn more about this study and check your eligibility at this link: Study
